March 4, 201411 yr Whoa, what? The episodes since the return have all been AMAZING. How are they slow paced exactly? You get back story on characters, Carl and Beth's coming of age, a hint of progression as to what caused the virus. Compared to 7 episodes of just looking for Sophia in Season 2 and 5 episodes of just negotiating with the Governor in Season 3, this is the most interesting a season has been.
March 4, 201411 yr Whoa, what? The episodes since the return have all been AMAZING. How are they slow paced exactly? Compared to 7 episodes of just looking for Sophia in Season 2 and 5 episodes of just negotiating with the Governor in Season 3, this is the most interesting a season has been. Horses for courses then. For me - series 4 has been rubbish so far (apart from the Michonne & Carl interaction). What did last night's episode tell us about Daryl that we didn't already know? There was zero character development there. Of the two last night - Beth was more bearable than Daryl - but these two actors aren't strong enough to carry a whole episode by themselves. The beauty of TWD in the early days was its ensemble cast appeal. I don't really give a hoot about the zombies - they can't plot and scheme like a true adversary - they just make a gurgling sound and look (and very probably smell) bad. It seems that the writers whenever there is a lull - throw a few of them in and its just old hat! I'll watch it next week as I believe two of the groups are to be reunited and hopefully there'll be some action - or at least - interaction.
March 4, 201411 yr Perhaps it's just because I am a Walking Dead loon but I really enjoy these slower paced episodes, and this show pulls them off tremendously well. Okay the acting is sometimes a bit sub par but the way this show fleshes out all it's main characters makes me so much more invested in them when the action strikes. Plus this slower pace is just going to make the ending episodes seem so much more jam packed. I just found last night's episode so painful to watch. Reedus's acting is at times atrocious - and I can't believe I'm saying that as Daryl was my favourite character for a long, long time. I don't mind slow episodes if there is a point to them. The episode with Carl & Michonne (interspersed with the scenes of Rick hiding in the house - genuine tension) was pretty good and we discovered stuff about Michonne - and Carl grows more likeable by the moment. But last night's episode was just slow with no redeeming features at all.
March 4, 201411 yr I found that episode the weakest of the second half of series 4 so far, but it served a purpose. Out all of the groups they're the ones with the least hope. Daryl was obviously struggling to come to terms with Merle's death, but also losing everyone else in the prison. He thinks Beth's the only person he has left in the world now. I'm wondering if they might kill her off, and make Daryl walk down a very dark path.
March 4, 201411 yr Author Agreed with what was said already. For me, I really liked this weeks episode (helps that I adore them 2 characters though) and I was so pleased we learnt more about Beth this week and I believe this was more of a Beth episode than a Daryl one (although we still learnt a fair bit about Daryl). I think Beth's character is being nicely fleshed out! She obviously just wanted to grieve losing her father. Daryl thinks he has to be the tough one, so holds all his emotions in and then bam, they all come out at once. I'm really liking this season. More than season 2, for sure. Not sure on season 3 just yet, but I'm sure it's fairly close. (Obviously none of them touch season 1 )
March 4, 201411 yr They need to kill Beth off. She's a background character at best and didn't deserve a whole episode for herself (with bits of Daryl thrown in of course). I'm thinking they're setting Beth up for something though. Either her death or Maggie's death. I find it hard to believe they would randomly give us loads of focus on her for no reason, yet never focused on her in the previous 3 series.
March 4, 201411 yr It's because she got promoted to series regular as they obviously saw a lot of potential with her character. This episode was just as much about teenage rebellion as grieving. I think she's a really interesting character in the way she was dealing with loss in the last half of the season and this half shows her characters growth. They best not kill off her or Maggie though. The only characters I could deal with losing at this point are Daryl (never been a big fan), the doctor guy, Carl (though that will never happen), the bloke who was shit with the machine gun and the really young girl. Anyone else and it will be a huge loss, I can see Glenn, Maggie and Tyresse's sister (her name evades me) dying though.
March 4, 201411 yr I did think last night they were setting one of them up for a fall - Daryl especially. Beth bigs his character up a little too much, and foreshadows her own death about two thirds of the way through the episode.
March 8, 201411 yr Hoping it picks up a bit this coming episode when (reportedly) two of the groups meet up. I just want it to get back to an ensemble cast instead of this meandering, fragmented mess it has become.
March 9, 201411 yr Hoping it picks up a bit this coming episode when (reportedly) two of the groups meet up. I just want it to get back to an ensemble cast instead of this meandering, fragmented mess it has become. I think it's ok to do the separations as long as it cuts faster between groups. They've been focusing on one group for too long, before switching to another.
March 9, 201411 yr I think it's ok to do the separations as long as it cuts faster between groups. They've been focusing on one group for too long, before switching to another. I get the idea of the separations and the 'little' stories they have but some are more successful than others. 'Still' (the Daryl/Beth) episode was a total waste of an opportunity.
March 17, 201411 yr Shocking, but brilliant episode! The first time I've been left reeling at the end of an episode for ages!
March 17, 201411 yr Brilliant episode. Almost back to the standard of the best of series 1. Melissa McBride is without doubt the best actor in this show. I found tonight's episode heart-breaking at times.
March 18, 201411 yr The shot where Tyreese confesses about his dreams to Carol and you get to see both their faces - amazing! Such a strong episode. What happened was perhaps rather rash but I suppose in the world they live in their was no other alternative, especially with a baby around.
March 18, 201411 yr Author I can only echo the sentiments of this thread in regards to that episode. Such a beautifully heart breaking, crazy episode! I'm really sad they killed off those two kids though as I really liked them, but for the purpose of this episode/this show, it was done so brilliantly and this new Carol is fantastic. Such major character development for her and Melissa has portrayed her wonderfully! So tense at every major moment of this episode. Did you guys know that the jigsaw puzzle on the table (in between takes and stuff the kids of the show would piece bits together) was a jigsaw of Sophia! Melissa didn't find out it was a picture of that until the beginning of the scene where she confesses to Tyreese and she thinks it was done on purpose to bring more to that scene. So superbly done! (Yay for 'Talking Dead') ;D
March 18, 201411 yr Author It's always worth watching for me, you always find something interesting. But in terms of guests, some woman from 'Community' was on it along with Phil "CM Punk" Brooks (ex-WWE Superstar) with Melissa on it also. plus, Chris Hardwick's one of the best presenters out there.
March 18, 201411 yr Best episode in a while, I do feel like they have been a bit more slow paced lately although we've got to see more of their back stories etc, but the last episode, particularly the ending with Carol was fantastic. I do hope the last 2 episodes are as explosive as some of the past season finales!
March 22, 201411 yr WHAT AN EPISODE :o It's one of the most disturbing WD episodes ever, if not the most. I don't even know how Carol can keep on going on and not just commit suicide, she has been through so much! What a strong character. She had no other option really but to kill the girl but it must have been the hardest thing ever to do. Best episode of the series surely? Now I'm sad because there's only two episodes left if I'm right. It's probably the end of a whole chapter though because it seems they'll all cross each other's path soon and the new characters are coming.
