Carey is the second best best selling female artist in the US (behind Barbra Streisand). Madonna and Carey switch between 2nd and 3rd place with every new album certification. And remember Brabra isn't #1 world wide.

 

The world's best-selling music artists cannot be listed officially, as there is no organization that has recorded global music sales in the manner that the RIAA does in the United States.

 

But to answer your question Madonna has sold more albums than Mariah but Mariah has sold more singles and with Mariah's recent success kepping in mind that Confessions hasnt performed very well in AMerica i think by the time Mariah Carey's time comes to retire she would have sold more than 40-50 more million albums by then!

I think that the fact that Nana Mouskouri is the biggest selling female artist of all time (with 350 million sales) without doing very much in UK or US is proof of the relative irrelevance of both markets - Europe, Asia and Russia/Eastern Europe utterly dwarf the US/UK market. I would also say that there are probably a few 'unknown' Hindi/Indian or Chinese singers who outsell Mariah and Madonna as well - over two Billion Indians and Chinese in the world, barely 212 million Americans and only 59 million Brits - hmmmm, the US/UK is looking pretty small beer now innit....? :lol: And yet we continue to insist that American and British acts are the be-all and end-all.....
