Posted October 4, 201311 yr I'm gonna be counting down my 100 favorite songs to fail to reach the Top 40 in the UK this year (so far) in alphabetical order by Artist. In a lot of these cases the songs failed to reach the Top 75 aswell, or maybe even the Top 100, 200 or even make as much as a single sale in the UK for all we know! However, the one thing they all have in common is the fact that none of them made the Official Top 40, which is what they could all only dream of (as then they'd be played on national radio woop!) The songs include a lot of international hits that never managed to replicate their success in the US, as well as some songs that I have just grown to love even though they were never hits anywhere. However, my criteria was still that the latter category (not hits anywhere else) had to at least have been released in the UK on iTunes (or maybe Amazon - just maybe.) I will then possibly update this in January '14 with the last three months, who knows. The bottom 41 (!) songs will be revealed in the next post or two. I'm borrowing the idea from this thread, I just felt that a 140 songs would be too much for the thread though so I made a list. Edited October 4, 201311 yr by jafetsigfinns
October 4, 201311 yr Author Oh, and I forgot to mention - these 41 songs that failed to make my Top 100 all failed to make the Top 75 in general, but definitely deserved to make it that far even though it was probably always gonna be a stretch that they would ever make the Top 40. 141. Nyusha - Naedine {15 April} 140. Andy Grammer - Keep Your Head Up {24 February} 139. Jessica Sutta - Lights Out {25 August} 138. Hot Chelle Rae - Hung Up {17 February} 137. StooShe - My Man Music {4 August} 136. Medina featuring Svenstrup and Vendelboe - Junkie {25 August} 135. Agnetha Fältskog - Dance Your Pain Away {14 July} 134. NERVO - Hold On {23 June} 133. Cassadee Pope - Wasting All These Tears {2 June} 132. Mika featuring Ariana Grande - Popular Song {5 May} 131. Helena Paparizou - Save Me (This Is An SOS) {2 June} So here we have the first batch of preliminaries, which includes some international pop singers like Nyusha (Russian), Medina (Danish), former ABBA singer Agnetha Fältskog (Swedish) and former Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou (Greek/Swedish) among others. Andy Grammer and Hot Chelle Rae are here to represent the pop-rock genre with two catchy numbers, and The Voice winner Cassadee Pope showcases her most recent single 'Wasting All These Tears'. Ex-Pussycat Dolls Jessica Sutta released a dance-pop number in August that went absolutely nowhere but is rather brillian in my opinion, and UK flops StooShe take a bottom slot with their #140 SMASH 'My Man Music' (Would have been a better idea to properly release 'See Me Like This' but I still love'em). Nyusha, a russian pop goddess, takes the absolute bottom spot for the sole reason that this foreign-speaking song was NEVER going to do anything in the UK despite spending a massive seven weeks at No. 1 in her home country (and being her sixth single so far to reach the top spot). Scandinavia's THREE representatives all have different stories to tell; Helena has long since fallen from Eurovision grace but still remains popular as ever in Greece (Sweden.. not so much) but seeing how her winning song of the 2005 ESC didn't even trouble the Top 75 back when, there was unfortunately never any hope for this infectiously catchy pop ditty; Agnetha has enjoyed some success this year with her album "A" (which has sold over 100K in the UK so far, and according to Wikipedia - 600K in the Netherlands!) but the same could not really be said about her singles of the era. I wasn't a fan of the other two, but 'Dance' grabbed me for some reason and made me actually want to get up and dance! The UK was never going to fall for that trick though. Medina has been one of my all-time favorite Scandinavian singers for a couple of years now, but for some reason 'Junkie' did not impress enough to make my top 100, but she does have a collaboration lingering in there that I think could have made an impact given the right treatment. Australian twins Miriam and Olivia NERVO also have a song in the Top 100, but that song is not 'Hold On' which unfortunately (as they are two of the best DJs out there today) passes for mediocre at best. Finally there's the TERRIBLY named 'Popular Song'. One of the performers is somebody that just doesn't seem to have grown up enough to keep making music, and the other is Ariana Grande. Mika has kept at the same pace in regards of childish lyrics since he released his 5+ million selling album 'Life in Cartoon Motion'. The thing is, it was cute and unique back then but now it's just getting tiring. I still do like this song (even though I hate the name), but it sure did take me a while to like it. Oh wow, that was a bit more than I planned on writing. Oops.
October 4, 201311 yr Author Oh man. This just drags on and on doesn't it? 130. Natalia Kills - Problem {17 March} Oh where did we go wrong with poor Natalia? 'Free' was one of the best songs of 2011, and her collab with Junior Caldera ("Lights Out") took the same prize for 2012. 'Trouble' is brilliant, especially when she got Kat Krazy mixed up in this business, and it's actually her currently most popular song on iTunes (which may or may not be a big feat for itself), but still it's made as little of a splash on charts around the world as Rebecca Black's latest single (happy friday guys, btw). Problem definitely deserved to make the Top 75 to say the least. She's got one song in my Top 100 though, and I'm fairly certain most of you agree with me on this. 129. Far East Movement featuring Riff Raff - The Illest {7 July} Far East Movement are awesome. There. I said it. They have consistently made great single choices (in my opinion) and I can't remember the last song of theirs that I didn't like! 'The Illest' has a killer beat (in true FEM fashion) and features a pretty cool video (which actually does not happen very often for them). It's a shame this never caught on anywhere as it could definitely have been the 'Hip-House' smash of the year if given the chance. I'm sure the UK would have lapped it up too. 128. Demi Lovato - Made In The USA {1 September} 'Heart Attack' has been one of the bigger pop hits in the US this year, and it kind of caught on in the UK what with it reaching No. 3 and spending some 15 weeks in the Top 75 (Demi's best performance in the UK so far by miles!). The follow-up has definitely underperformed everywhere (including in the USA, where she was reportedly 'made') with its peak in the UK at the time this is written being No. 91. Things can change quickly though, but seeing how Skyscraper is grabbing the spotlight at the moment (a little late aren't we?), I think 'Made's time to shine has passed us by. This saddens me 'cause the song is definitely a guilty pleasure for me, awh. 127. J. Dash - WOP {21 July} I'm not sure if any of you recognize this song from the name but if you have ever watched a Vine video I can almost guarantee you have heard it! Though the song was released stateside in 2012 I have found no evidence of the song being released in the UK prior to 2013. This is not surprising as the song didn't really catch on until this year, but the reason why the song never went anywhere on the charts is probably the fact that the song is fun for a week or so, then it gets tiring real fast. Also, the verses suck - it's all about the chorus. NOW PLAY DEAD LIKE. 126. Alex Gaudino featuring Jordin Sparks - Is This Love? {3 March} Here is an example of an artist that simply can't seem to do anything new. I actually loved this song back in January, but the thing is - all of his songs these days sound like rehashes of 'I'm In Love' (One of my top 10 songs ever, jsyk) and 'What A Feeling'. Not only do the beats sound similar, but he keeps getting his singers to sing about the same exact thing. Geez Alex, we get it, you're in love or something. This is one of three songs of his to miss out on the Top 100, but comes in last because one of them has star power while the other one is just a bit better. I'm actually also not sure if this was ever released as a proper single. Pictures are links to music videos or just audio. Edited October 4, 201311 yr by jafetsigfinns
October 4, 201311 yr 128. 91. October 4, 201311 yr Author 91??? Are you kidding!! Didn't realise it had done so poorly!! Yup, that's what Wikipedia tells me at least. It definitely never entered the Top 75 at least!
October 7, 201311 yr Author 125. Fergie featuring Q-Tip and GoonRock - A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) {16 June} Oh, gee. Where do I start? The soundtrack to Gatsby was *AMAZING*; quite possibly my favorite movie soundtrack ever (all-in-all -- not just based on one song). Fergie makes her long-awaited by releasing this crazy-weird 30s inspired dance number, which surprisingly is actually good! However opinions are definitely divided on the track, as it definitely does get old very fast. What I don't understand is how this didn't even trouble the top 200 in the UK, while will.i.am's FAR inferior 'Bang Bang' took a top 5 slot (Thankfully, it's been a moderate hit in the rest of Europe). That being said, there are definitely better songs on the soundtrack and Fergie herself has made much better music in the past. 124. Axwell - Center of the Universe {18 August} This was Axwell's first proper release after splitting from SHM in 2012 (as far as I know, though these DJs can be hard to figure out when it comes to releases), and at that! Axwell has always been my favorite out of the three, but this time he loses out to Sebastian as to who made the better 2013 solo single. 'Reload' leaves 'Center' in the dust for sure, which transpires onto the charts when Seb takes a top 10 slot while Axwell was nowhere to be seen come August 18th. 123. Alex Gaudino featuring Mario - Beautiful {28 July} Three songs later and we have the out of three. 'Beautiful' is in my opinion probably the most chart-friendly, but it's still pretty repetitive and doesn't really go anywhere (like most of his songs tend to do). I still wonder how he manages all these big names on his songs, but I'll admit that they do usually have promise, but something keeps going wrong because as far as I know these tracks are pretty much doing nothing anywhere. 122. MØ featuring Diplo - XXX 88 {1 September} This song I might be wrong about seeing how it hasn't really been released properly anywhere so far, but this is by far (at least out of the ones that I have heard). The problem here is the same as with most of these foreign singers - without hype, they are never going to do anything in the UK. MØ has actually gotten quite some hype throughout the last year or so, but nothing's happened yet. I hope I'm wrong because Diplo's production on this is sick, but if you've ever listened to a Diplo production before you know that's nothing new. 121. Alex Gaudino featuring Nicole Scherzinger - Missing You {15 September} Three singles this year: all feature big names: all fail to even make the top 200 in the UK. I put 'Missing You' at the highest spot out of the three because it had the to make at least a small splash on the british charts if only for the fact that Nicole is the most famous over there. The song itself however is definitely not a favorite of mine so I'm not very irked that this went nowhere. Get your sh*t together Alex! 120. Nicky Romero featuring Krewella - Legacy {23 June} Nicky Romero is yet another dutch DJ, and yet another name for anyone beside dance enthusiasts to forget. Or maybe not. This 24-year-old has only been around for some 5 years or so, but his songs have been off-the-hook amazing! 'Legacy' features american trio Krewella who have also been shockingly snubbed from the UK Top 75 this year, and is pretty much a smash waiting to happen! The sad part is that it hasn't been released yet as a single, and I for one have no idea if it ever will. If it does, I'm sure it will at least make Top 75. 119. Lasgo - Feeling Alive {7 July} Surely most of you remember Lasgo's 2001 hit 'Something' and their subsequent 5 or 6 duplicate follow-ups. This is most likely the reason for their failure at repeating what they did at the beginning of the century. 'Feeling Alive' however is in my opinion songs in recent past, as it sounds both fresh and nostalgic at the same time! Too bad nobody really cares what they're up to today. 118. Follow Your Instinct featuring Alexandra Stan - Baby It's OK {29 September} Alexandra Stan is an example of an artist that just keeps on releasing catchy pop numbers! To the listening public though she'll probably always be a one-hit wonder for her 2011 smash 'Mr. Saxobeat'. 'Baby' is definitely , but it's still a fun, summery song that samples 'Give It Up' by KC and the Sunshine Band. But a hit it ain't. 117. Charli XCX - You (Ha Ha Ha) {17 February} Ahh, Charli XCX - aka. the forgotten feature from 'I Love It'. I like Charli, I'm not gonna lie, but I still feel that most of her songs are missing something. however, and is easily one of her best to date. It's still a bit repetitive, but nothing worse than most of the Top selling songs this year. I'm not really sure why this never went anywhere but my guess is gonna go on the fact that this was (presumably) not really promoted at all. 116. Booty Luv - Black Widow {10 February} This was a sad day for me as it pretty much meant the definite end of Booty Luv's days of smashing the charts. Sure, they hadn't been seen on the charts since 2009, but that's because they hadn't released anything since then so it was sad to see that their comeback was totally snubbed by just about everyone. though since 'Black Widow' isn't really anything special. I liked it, but I quickly forgot about it after my initial listening period. Edited October 7, 201311 yr by jafetsigfinns
October 8, 201311 yr Author 115. Lana Del Rey - Burning Desire {24 March} are the first words that come to mind. In an ideal world this would've been Top 50. But of course if there really was a god all LDR songs would make all music charts! 114. Roll Deep featuring Camille - All or Nothing {28 July} Back in 2010 they owned the charts with 2 #1s and one unfortunate #29. This should have at least replicated a spot but somehow this was never anywhere to be seen. 113. Zendaya - Replay {28 July} The youtube prodigé.. or, well, you know - the chick that out in early August. Seems to have paid off somewhat in the US but never did anything in the UK. 112. Kylie Minogue - Skirt {30 June} Everything Kylie releases should get Top 75 status at least, and this is even if it took me a while to get used to it. We all know Timebomb was one of the most undeserved flops of 2012. :( 111. Hurts - Miracle {17 March} Why don't the UK like Hurts?! When I found out that 'Wonderful Life' only made #21 my jaw literally dropped to the floor! I always thought it had been a massive hit but that only seems to have gone for the rest of Europe. This should have been at least a too, if only for the fact that Hurts are legends. 110. Sykur - Messy Hair {3 March} Time to shamelessly plug one of my ! Thankfully they released this in the UK on iTunes, so I can include it! Synthpop at its' best! One song of theirs made my Top 100. 109. Jessica Mauboy - To The End Of The Earth {21 July} I'll admit I only discovered this song like two weeks ago so given more listening time this would def. make my Top 100. Ms Mauboy is in her home country Australia, but I can't help but feel she could easily be big in the UK if given the chance! 108. Nabiah - Ask Yourself {31 March} Another international star to miss out my Top 100 is Nabiha. This one is Danish and just goes on to prove how stars can be! (As if we didn't know that already) 107. Mark Owen - Stars {16 June} The remix of this I would have thought was a sure hit! However since this apparantly got little to no promotion at all I guess I'll have to satisfy myself with an imaginary Top 75 placement! 106. The Knocks featuring St. Lucia - Modern Hearts {21 April} comes in the form of NYC duo The Knocks' 2013 single 'Modern Hearts'. Even though this song gained a lot of attention on SoundCloud and HypeMachine, it went nowhere when it came down to sales. Aw bugger.
October 26, 201311 yr We all know Timebomb was one of the most undeserved flops of 2012. ONE OF HER BEST SONGS EVERRRRR!!
