KOTA make the semi-finals of TBO VII

 

The much delayed results of the nominations stage of The Best of BJSC VII finally took place last night and the outcome was pretty much what was expected for Persephonia, with Kids Of The Apocalypse's 'EMPIRE' making it through to the semi-final stage and the rest of our non-winners falling short.

 

In a ~twist~, this year the contest winners do not advance directly to the final, so Persephonia have a second song (Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto's 'Cry For Freedom') in the semi-final stage. Both songs have been drawn into semi-final 1. We hope to be safely through to the final with at least one of the two tracks.

 

As for our other entries: Paris XY's 'The Return' received only 5 points in the nomination stage to finish 26th in its contest; Surkin's 'Oedo 606' got 13 points to finish 15th; TĀLĀ's 'Serbia' received a disappointing 14 points to come 14th; Quirke's 'Break A Mirrored Leg' also only picked up 5 points for a 26th place finish; Jade Blue and Frequency's 'Lately' (Vox Mix) came the closest to progressing, coming 11th with 17 points; Eagles For Hands feat. Holly Partridge unsurprisingly did the worst of our songs with only 4 points to come 30th; Elijah Blake's 'Give Me U' got 16 points for a 15th place finish; Fura's 'Demons' came 26th with 7 points.

 

Persephonia's votes in The Best of The Rejects VII

 

Although we had no eligible songs for the contest this year (suffering from success) we did vote properly in all stages of this year's Rejects competition for what I think is the first time ever. The eventual winner, Ethanola entry 'You Too' by Para One, received 6 points from us in the final so we can't complain at all at that. Double trouble from Persephonia in the TBO final

 

Both of Persephonia's semi-finalists in The Best of BJSC VII have made it through to the final of the year end competition, meaning we have two tracks in the TBO final for a second year in a row (a 100% hit rate out of our top 10 finishers since the start of 2013).

 

We therefore repeat our urge for people to get their votes in for both 'EMPIRE' and 'Cry For Freedom' - we can't do well in this thing without your support!!!1!

KOTA and Jay Dabhi both smash TBO VII!

 

Our two entries in The Best of BJSC VII both outperformed our expectations. Kids Of The Apocalypse's 'EMPIRE' finished 3rd with 91 points, just five behind the eventual winner (Altyr Muunilinst with Blonde's 'I Loved You' (feat. Melissa Steel)) and Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto came 6th with 'Cry For Freedom', receiving 82 points.

 

Second place went to Trifoski with The Magician's 'Sunlight' (feat. Years & Years) receiving just one point more than 'EMPIRE', while the top 5 was completed by A. G. Cook's 'Beautiful' in 4th for Aeroche and, surprisingly but very pleasingly, Hendinia entry 'High' by Peking Duk feat. Nicole Millar in 5th.

 

Indila's 'Dernière Danse', which prevented 'EMPIRE' from winning its original contest, came 8th for Daehun while Florina entry 'Circles' by Vanic and machineheart which came 2nd to 'Cry For Freedom' in a very close original contest finished 13th. Despite a 15 point deduction, FARC managed a top 10 finish with SOHN's 'Artifice' in 9th. Hendinia matched our two top 10 entries as they also came 10th with Cash Cash's 'Take Me Home' (feat. Bebe Rexha). Also in the top 10 was Karen Harding, 7th place with 'Say Something' representing Fljótavík.

 

Aeroche qualified the most entries for the final but 'Beautiful' was their only one to go top 10. Their other three entries came 16th (Tchami's 'Untrue'), 19th (Henry Saiz's 'All The Evil Of This World') and 22nd (Ain't No Love's 'Love Me Lots' (Bridge & Law Remix)). Hendinia had a third song in the final, Sophie Del Carmen's 'Lipstick' which came 24th. The other two Jubirdia entries to make the final were Oh, Be Clever's 'Next To You' (20th for Daehun) and VÉRITÉ's 'Weekend' which sadly took the wooden spoon in 30th for D'yermak'er, with 36 points.

San Holo and The Nicholas provide our 50th entry

 

We can finally announce that our entry to BJSC LXXI in the Republic of Adonia comes from Dutch trap/dubstep producer San Holo (featuring fellow Dutch act The Nicholas) with 'Hiding'. The track has been knocking around as a potential entry for a little while and finally gets its time to shine now, acting as Persephonia's 50th entry to the BuzzJack Song Contest. It's also the first time we've entered an artist hailing from the Netherlands, the new home of dance music. Go easy on us.

 

We aren't always one for stereotypical big drops in songs. But that drop tho. Bass dropped off the Empire State Building and splatting on the floor at terminal velocity ~

San Holo gives us a 12th consecutive qualifier

 

It was announced tonight that our 50th entry 'Hiding' by San Holo feat. The Nicholas qualified for the final of BJSC LXXI in the Republic of Adonia. That extends Persephonia's run of consecutive final appearances to 12, a new record surpassing even our run of 11 across the One Big Final era. It's our 35th final appearance in total.

 

Our record of the longest active qualification streak continues to be tied but now only with Daehun, as unfortunately N DNTN broke their streak of 11 qualifiers today with a DNQ for Palmistry's 'Protector SE5'.

Second bottom 5 finish in a row (and 3rd in 4 contests)

 

The Persephonian BJSC Committee is reportedly in crisis mode as we finish in the bottom 5 of the BJSC final once more. Latest entry 'Hiding' by San Holo feat. The Nicholas finished 28th out of 32, a place higher than our last entry but on a slightly lower points total of 63. It marks our 6th worst final performance in terms of percentage of available points (9.38%) and the 2nd worst out of songs that made it out of a semi-final, only outperforming Frankie & The Heartstrings' 'Hunger'.

 

On the bright side, it does at least give us a new unique final position, as our first ever 28th place entry. 15 countries voted for 'Hiding', with the most support coming from D'yermak'er (10 points), Land of DW and PRoJ (8 points each). We're still yet to receive a single 12 since our win in BJSC LXVII, despite being in all four finals since.

 

The PBJSCC is debating whether it should redouble efforts to find a smash hit for next month's contest or if it should accept defeat and decide to voluntarily end our qualification streak in a blaze of glory with an iconically leftfield selection.

 

Final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

 

Until two contests ago long-time participants Altyr Muunilinst had never won BJSC but they now pick up a second win in three contests (both of which won by a large margin). The winner of BJSC LXXI in the Republic of Adonia was 'People' by IIIII feat. Adele Kosman, with 215 points.

 

A full 50 points behind in second place was Listenbee's 'Save Me' (feat. Naz Tokio) representing Ramrynia, marking the third time Ramrynia have come runners-up without them ever winning. Both previous times this occurred, Ramrynia hosted the following contest anyway due to the winners choosing not to host. It's actually very likely Altyr Muunilinst will choose not to host BJSC LXXII, but history won't repeat again as new rules for passing down hosting rights mean they instead go to the next highest country who have not hosted. It is therefore likely BJSC LXXII will be held in Aquafina as they finished 4th with Galantis' 'Runaway (U & I)' (incidentally the same place Altyr Muunilinst finished with a previous Galantis song, 'You') on 155 points. Aquafina have co-hosted a contest - the last contest in fact, co-hosting with Altyr Muunilinst to further add to these coincidences - but they've never had a chance to host fully as they've never won or even come top 3, this being their second song to finish 4th after Girls' Generation's 'Flower Power'.

 

Aquafina lost a tie for 3rd place with FSR Rontvia's entry, the Lulleaux & George Whyman remix of Ulf Nilsson's 'Little By Little'. The top 5 was completed by Fljótavík's surprise hit 'Christine' by Christine And The Queens in 5th on 154 points. Altyr Muunilinst were top 10 for a third straight contest, FSR Rontvia for a second and Fljótavík for a fourth but Ramrynia and Aquafina achieved their first top 10 positions for 9 and 14 contests respectively.

 

Yehesi achieved a new highest finish with Yellow Claw's 'Till It Hurts' (feat. Ayden) in 6th place, one place ahead of Watermät's 'Bullit' which was their only previous top 10 hit five contests ago. The highest placed song this month that we actually voted for (though we heavily regret not voting for Fljótavík now) was our 12 pointer, Trifoski's entry 'O.N.E.' by Yeasayer which finished 7th to give Trifoski a sixth straight top 10 (more top 10s than we've had ever - stop being greedy!!1!) Séyetana were top 10 for the first time in 5 contests, 8th place with Rachel Taylor's 'Porcelain'. Six of their last seven final appearances have made the top 10 (again that's more top 10s than we've ever had, little bit jealous over here). Daehun have also had too many top 10 hits recently as they achieved a second in a row and 7th in 11 contests with Jolin Tsai's 'Play' in 9th. Ethanola have had a much more SENSIBLE two top ten hits so far, as they picked up their 2nd in Adonia with the Matoma remix of 'Back Home' by MYNGA feat. Cosmo Klein, rounding off the top 10. Their previous top 10 hit was a 3rd place finish for Zeds Dead's 'Lost You' (feat. Twin Shadow and D'Angelo Lacy) 5 contests ago, with all four entries in between failing to qualify for the final.

 

Three countries participated for the first time this month. Only one of them made the final, and they didn't make much of an impact there - Llewandia's debut entry 'No Way Out' by Vicetone feat. Kat Nestel finished 30th. Of the two other debuts Sãó Ricó will hopefully stick around but Jacksland apparently decided one DNQ was enough for them and didn't vote in the final. They're unlikely to enter again in the future. Two returning countries made the final; Hendinia were banned last contest but returned with a semi-bang in 16th with Julia Volkova's 'Didn't Wanna Do It', while Unovia also sat out last month and returned with CeCe's 'Dead 2 Me' in 21st.

 

Harmonica made it through a semi-final for the first time this month (they debuted in the one big final contest of LXIV, finishing 35th then, and failed to qualify six times in a row since) and fell just short of a top 10 with their first proper qualifier, Coasts' 'A Rush Of Blood' in 11th. Quintessa also set a new best finish in 13th with Float Fall's 'Someday', which was similarly only the second time they'd qualified from a semi-final though they too entered in BJSC LXIV, in which they achieved their previous best of 21st place with Natural Animal's 'Who You Are'.

 

The rest of the Jubirdia bunch not yet mentioned: Sandebörg came 20th with Stockholm Syndrome's 'Kalabalik'; D'yermak'er stole our potential entry (!!1!) and did better than the one we actually sent, although not a lot better, coming 22nd with Kacy Hill's 'Experience'; Aeroche's latest auto-qualifier 'Fiji' by Kryder came 24th, their joint lowest ever final position.

 

Wooden spoon duties went to Usfland (who have been in the bottom 5 of the final with us these last two contests) who sadly finished 32nd out of 32 with Flume and Chet Faker's 'Drop The Game', scoring 52 points.

We are proud to announce our 51st entry, to the 72nd BuzzJack Song Contest in Darpabrak, Altyr Muunilinst, comes from American singer and former member of flop girlgroup Danity Kane / slightly less flop group Diddy - Dirty Money, Dawn Richard with the stunningly atmospheric electronica/R&B track 'Tide: The Paradox Effect', a vinyl bonus track on her second solo album 'Blackheart'.

 

It comes packaged with an equally stunning video directed by We Were Monkeys of 'Little Talks' fame, in a return to Persephonia's fleeting commitment to providing quality both on the audio and visual fronts. Listen and watch below to our hopes of an unlucky-for-some 13th consecutive final:

 

 

'Serbia' semi-final position finally announced

 

Due for unforeseeable circumstances involving the host nation Vülkyria, the semi-final results of BJSC LXIV were never revealed and the semi-finals were ultimately cancelled, leading to a one month revival of the One Big Final format.

 

With Vülkyria resurfacing this month, the lost results have finally been revealed meaning we can stop speculating over whether our entry to that contest, 'Serbia' by TĀLĀ, should be counted as a 'legitimate' qualifier.

 

Indeed it was, coming 13th in semi-final 1 with 50 points. It only qualified by two points so was far from safe despite it going on to be one of our most successful entries in the final.

Dawn survives the bloodbath to give Persephonia lucky Q #13 (in a row)

 

Qualifying for the final of the BuzzJack Song Contest was harder than ever this month as for the first time ever more than half of each semi-final fell at that hurdle. Nonetheless, Persephonia persevered and are into a thirteenth final in a row courtesy of Dawn Richard's 'Tide: The Paradox Effect'. We are cautiously optimistic for a decent final result with a number of known supporters behind the track already. Daehun predictably also qualified thus blocking us yet again from claiming sole ownership of the longest active qualification streak.

 

Sadly the mass cull of songs meant that quite a number of Persephonian voters' favourites in semi-final 2, and just as many in semi-final 1 based on our would-be votes, have bitten the dust, most egregiously of all the entries from N DNTN and Patvia.

You only didn't steal my song, but one of my favourite artists. I love her.

 

I wouldn't mind if you win the whole contest with her, it would be deserved !!
