Sometimes I wonder if you are ACTUALLY me Tony. Some brilliant choices there, particularly "Winter In July", its message being simply 'life is short don't waste it'. Loretta Heywood on vocal duties, very underrated and a lovely video to boot! Excellent. :D

REM - Near Wild Heaven

2 Weeks

REM doing what REM do best - jangle pop and ecstatic harmonies. Mike Mills takes the lead on this rather than Michael Stype. It's not every band that can boast two of alternative music's best voices. Mike's was always the more Beach Boys-esque of the two and Near Wild Heaven suits him down the ground.

It all breezes towards that 2:26 part when it just drops back to two voices and the guitar. I actually bought this on cassette single when I was over in England in August 1991 visiting my cousins.

Heaven, indeed.

The Prodigy - Charly

3 Weeks

Words fail me about how to describe the genius involved in every element of this. From the beat, to the silly vocal samples, to the bass, to the percussion parts.

I've just listened to it four times in a row and it's still a pure joy. They would go on to better it - a few times at least.

It wasn't their debut single but what an introduction!

....and we have another all dance top 3 on 29/09....

Shout out to "Such A Feeling" by Bizarre Inc. People forget that in favour of "Playing With Knives" but I love it just as much.

Lovely to see the Prodigy with their first ever T40 hit - the version they played on R1 whilst this was in the chart was a totally different version IIRC.

They got unfairly (IMO) blamed for the awful raft of 'rave' versions of children's TV shows "Sesame's Treet" by Smart E's and "A Trip To Trumpton" by Urban Hype however what they did at the time was totally original and really worked for me.

Such a Feeling is incredible and deserves way more recognition - has a fairly good run for a #13 hit too, going 28-20-14-13-15-16-25-38-57. People even seem to forget Playing With Knives in favour if 'I'm Gonna Get You' which is their most commercial (and probably weakest) single. Charly is most definitely a classic, these songs blew my mind when I first heard them in about 2004 so I can only imagine what they must have sounded to 1991 ears!

I'm Gonna Get You is awful. Playing With Knives is much better.

winter in july - brilliant. Charly: annoyed me a bit. The kiddie novelty angle used to push a drugs rave message (I assume) just didnt mix for me. At least E's Are Good E's Are Good was catchy....

Firstarter though...oh yes!

Some of the others are ok to me but not so good.

Planet of Sound and Charly are, of course, brilliant

It was in the chart at the same time as "Such a Good Feeling" (which had a similar chart run IIRC and made it slightly confusing) but looking back it is quite amazing how a song like that managed to stay inside the Top 20 for well over a month. Though, I grant you that acid house was popular at the time - "Playing With Knives" was a lot more commercial and as a result was a new entry inside the Top 10 (rare at that time) only a few weeks later.

Looking forward to Oct/Nov '91 Tony, hopefully an appearance for Congress "40 Miles" coming up! :D

Rozalla - Everybody's Free

1 Weeks

And the Queen of Rave makes it to number 1 for a solitary week. Uplifting, soaring, and that breakdown!!! Classic rave synth and house-piano. I had the pleasure of hearing her do this live at Pride Waterford two years ago. I was the only person going mental at the front. She hugged me afterwards.

Erasure - Love to Hate You

3 Weeks

Back with a second number 1 from Chorus - Love to Hate You was the biggest selling of the four singles released from Chorus despite peaking lower than the title-track.

Very much influenced by ABBA and I Will Survive, this is superbly camp.

A minor number 40 hits in the UK - a dramatic and haunting song about loss showcasing Alison's towering vocals.

This House! I adore that track, such a pleasant surprise to see it here.

Love To Hate You was my favourite song for months, even though it's my least favourite of the Chorus singles in retrospect.

U2 - The Fly

3 Weeks

Now here's a band that I have a very mixed relationship with. They spent the 90s being quite interesting and all it started here. It's quite creditable for a band who had left us with the one dimensional, bluesy Rattle and Hum to come back with such a risky, non-U2 sounding song. It was jagged, distorted, utterly modern and frankly must have been quite alarming for the casual fan.

Again, I didn't appreciate it at the time. The solo is an all time favourite of mine.

Keeping the staggeringly accomplished Fall At Your Feet at number 2 was quite a feat also.

The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu - It's Grim Up North (Part 1)

3 Weeks

We're into a decade-high sales period now. It's Grim Up North overhauls a still-mammoth-performing The Fly while Fall At Your Feet outperforms most number 1s come the year end.

Even though It's Grim Up North is the least catchy of any single issued by a KLF incarnation it is the most sophisticated. The detail is phenomenal. The sound is huge. The addition of Jerusalem at the end couldn't be anything less than glorious.

I've said it before but I can hear Underworld and the Chemical Brothers here, years before their time.
