Manic Street Preachers - Theme from M*A*S*H (Suicide is Painless)

3 Week

It's all about that solo. This is the first Manic song I ever remember hearing. It appeared on the Greatest Hits of 1992 and I wasn't really that interested in it. I'm afraid it wasn't until 1996 when I (and a lot of other people) became interested in going back to their older songs. Of course, having known that Richie had gone missing gives the subject of the song a deeper meaning for me. It's a fascinating title.

Suede - Metal Mickey

4 Weeks

And another song with a prominent solo. I never really liked the Drowners. This, however, I love and has a simple but effective, three note hook in the chorus that just works for me. A stand out on their debut album for me and one of their best singles.

I bought the original film version (It's a great melody, mostly), but outside the context of the film it becomes worryingly disturbing and I was never comfortable with the Manics take on it. In the movie Painless was a dentist who decided to arrange to kill himself in a public ceremonial goodbye over some jilting, or something not earth-shattering, just cos he was feeling a bit sorry for himself. It was comical not serious (and they all duly took the piss out of him). It was also a bitter commentary on war....

Tasmin and Oldfield, though, fab stuff B-)

Shakespears Sister - Hello (Turn Your Radio On)

4 Weeks

A lot of people seem to forget about this song. Just because it didn't spend nearly 2 months at number 1. For my money this is nearly as good as Stay. It has a more conventional structure. Plenty of angular piano under the second verse. And it's all carried off with a wonderful, sweeping chorus and resolves itself beautifully. Nice guitar solo too.

Wonderful.

Excellent choice Tony!

"Hello (Turn Your Radio On)" is such a beautiful song, I love the nostalgic and haunting tone of the track, but the lyrics are rather beautiful too. I think it s a song about isolation and depression, which in todays society is all the more poignant.

Hard to believe how much bitter feuding there was between them at the time, after 93 they never spoke to each other again. :(

Prodigy - Out Of Space

5 Weeks

And grabbing the the number 1 by the bollox and not letting go until the New Year is quite simply one of the greatest dance songs of all time. Thundering, looping, filled with hooks, a peerless riff and raising the bar so high that they rarely matched it again - no one else came close. It's on top of my list of "twelve inches to buy".

Poor Enya thwarted again - would she ever get a number 1?

Poor Enya thwarted again - would she ever get a number 1?

Only Time? Oh wait, that was 2000s. :P

"Out Of Space" is of course a great Prodigy track, it had a pretty tumultuous Top 20 chart run at the time partly explained by it's steady sales in a period where there were often 14-17 new entries each week and then and sudden slowdown around Christmas which meant it went: 14-6-{5}-8-11-14-12-9-..

Predictions for 1993?

Your tastes have been fairly in alignment with mine so far, I'd guess at:

The Beloved "Sweet Harmony"

The Orb "Little Fluffy Clouds"

Sub Sub "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)"

James "Laid"

Suede "Animal Nitrate"

New Order "Regret"

Leftfield "Open Up"

Robin S. "Show Me Love"

and (I don't think you'll have this) but I would have "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran - remixed of course by Aurora in 2000 but I do love the original.

Arrested Development - Mr. Wendal

2 Weeks

Ah......bliss.

I much prefer this to People, Everyday - it's really a much more of a Summer song that one to be released in January.

1993 was to be a more rootsie year than previous with regga and dance-hall selling well and flooding the charts. But rarely approached the wholesomeness of Mr. Wendal.

I love "Sweet Harmony" - didn't hear it at the time but in the early 2000s the BBC used it to soundtrack 'I Love 1993' and that was when I fell in love with it. I also note Duran Duran entering at #2 on the last chart there. :D

"Mr Wendal" is a classic, I'd agree that it is better than "People Everyday" - I think I first heard it on "in the Mix 96" which I still have knocking about somewhere.

I'm surprised to see Ebeneezer Goode there.

I was so into The Shamen. Right from the In Gorbachev We Trust album.

En-Tact was an immense album and my love carried on to the Boss Drum album too, even though it was more poppy/dancey.

It was an absolute joy seeing Ebeneezer get to the top spot.

Surprising as it may seem I do like some dance music. Not much it has to be said but USURA nearly made #1 for me as did Utah Saints and other Shamen tracks.

If I went back Pro-Gen should really have done and Make It Mine should definitely have done.

But I was so heavily into Grunge/Shoegaze/T-shirt indie/goth/metal, dance didn't get that much of a look-in.
