Placebo - Nancy Boy

Taking advantage of a slow time for singles (in my eyes) Nancy Boy manages a week at number 1 heading a brand new top 3.

Of course, at the time I love it a whole lot more. Everyone seemed to be excite that they could manage a Top 5 hit and it dragged a whole legion of britpop fans in a somewhat darker direction.

They went on to better it in many ways.

David Bowie - Little Wonder

Now, some people scoffed at him, arriving to the drum and bass party in 1997. Who cares when it sounds as good as this? I just read that the lyrics were inspired by the sever dwarves. He produced himself too - something that hadn't happened in 20 years.

His 90s singles were generally great.

Daft Punk - Da Funk

Who'd have thought on hearing this that Daft Punk would influence pop music (as well as dance music) for most of the following decade and that they'd have a million selling single 16 years later?

Not I, for one.

It completely relies on a few excellently executed layers. The restraint is commendable.

Excellent to see "Da Funk" was a #1 - I remember buying Discovery in an independent record shop back in 2001 and playing it for most of that summer. I also have vague memories of this and "Around The World" making the Top 40 and sounding quite out-of-place but very good amongst all the Brit pop and dance pop.

All these singles were # 1s in my chart. "You'll See" was my "Song Of The Year".

How I could missed it ? Finally we shared two # 1 songs in our retrospectives.

Thanks for replying, Alex.

We do have an overlap in tastes.

Monaco - What Do You Want From Me?

How could I not love this? It sounds exactly like prime-time New Order, moody verse and glorious chorus and all. Dat baseline.

A friend once pointed out that the bridge incorporates influences of U2, (2:08) Oasis (2:34) and Pet Shop Boys (2:47)

Lamb - Gorecki

There's so much to love about this amazing track. The heart felt lyrics, the strings, the percussion, the build of it all.

It's quite an experience.

Texas - Halo

So much of this reminds me of the majesty of A Design for Life - which is no surprise as Mike Hedges produced it too. The strings have such a kick to them.

Best Texas single by a long way.

Daft Punk - Around the World

I can understand someone not liking this song - the vocoder-ed vocals are annoying but the music is so bloody good I can manage to ignore them. I must try and get a purely instrumental version. It kept Olive at number 2 for 3 weeks which was also a highlight of 1997.

Amazing video too - Michel Gondry is a genius.

Wahoo! I predicted and hoped for "What Do You Want From Me?"

It's not how it used to be... I was introduced to that song by Trigger Happy TV would you believe it - and I bought the soundtracks to both series as I loved the music from it: hopefully Gene follows in August! :D

"Around The World" is also amazing. Lots I'm loving from '97.

1997 is a lot more solid than I remembered. My fave years for singles have always been 96 and 98.

Interesting choice, I thought it's something from their mI ost well-known singles.

Like Texas, but I prefer "The Hush", maybe all singles from that era, where my # 1s. Do you have any another Garbage singles in your top 3 or even # 1 ?

There is not many chances for me to have any another same # 1s.

Oh, wait. Maybe you are a secret fan of Vanilla.

Why would you expect a well known single to be my favourite?

The Hush singles were good. I loved the album track Saint. Absolutely beautiful.

I am not saying if there are any more Garbage songs in my countdown - that would spoil the surprise.

Jewel - Foolish Games

This is absolutely gorgeous. An ode to a man in style and lyric that Kate Bush now and again used to employ, babbling along like Joni Mitchell. There's a distance at work here where she's clearly in awe of a man that she can quite connect with.

Paula Cole - Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?

Second one hit wonder in a row from a female America singer with vague country tinges. There's nothing startlingly original about this song, it's just got a really lovely lyric about a no good husband and nice vocal layers.

James - Waltzing Along

Following up the mighty Tomorrow with Waltzing Along, James were going through my favourite period for them. She's a Star was also great. I find it hard to separate the two former singles. Waltzing Along just did better in this chart due to being released at a time of lesser competition.

Massive Attack - Risingson

Holy jebus - this is amazing. I vaguely remember it at the time but over the years and especially when I started falling badly for Mezzanine it has come to be one of the most astonishingly atmospheric pieces that I go to. The layers are so great. A highlight of 1997.
