Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

6 weeks

And here is that juggernaut that held Elephant Stone at number 2 for six weeks. The pair held Erasure's ravishingly great Blue Savannah in third place for three weeks, also.

On to the song.....One of the cleanest (musically speaking) and purest things Depeche Mode ever made. Sinuously snaking it's way through four minutes of bubbling bass, electro squelches - the production is magical.

It seems to get better with time. The choral backing and synth brass in the final part is the part that sticks with you long after it has stopped. Much covered and much revered - many would agree that this is their best single - Personal Jesus does draw many fans too. Simply one of my favourite songs.

Great thread Tony. I remember Dandy doing this in the teams thread (and me stealing the idea too) but sadly neither ever got finished because they closed the teams down.

My guess for Spice Girls is Stop

As for Roxette I can only remember The Look and Joyride ut I doubt it's either of those

They Might be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul

3 weeks

Coming from Athens, Georgia and making cute, upbeat alternative pop is surely going to invite REM comparisons and they were most accurate here. Multiple hooks abound in this stomping, cycling, whimsical summery song. Lyrically it's reminiscent of a Lightning Seeds song. It rises and falls engagingly, through out. Utterly charming.

I'm afraid you're incorrect.

I didn't realise that Dandy* or you had this idea before.

Yep. Plenty. But perhaps not with songs that you like.

I just counted 12 and over 10 female fronted bands.

At least one of those HAS to be Garbage. I'm thinking you're rather fond of Version 2.0.

Adamski - Killer

5 weeks

Killer is quite an unusual song in that it is almost universally revered and has been covered many times but nothing really sounded like it afterwards. The first and only song I've heard compared to it was Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and that wasn't exactly in the same genre. Anyway, the instant hook of the kick drum and THAT riff plus Seal's textured vocals made this a huge hit and one, with the help of Birdhouse, kept Orbital's seminal Chime at number 2 for five weeks in my chart.

This is not the last time they would play bridesmaid in this chart spending multiple weeks behind an absolute anthem. Chime is pretty amazing - made in about half an hour purely just to test out a new machine that the Hartnoll brothers had just acquired. Deceptively simple and still sounds great 23 years on. As does Killer.

Incidentally - the Top 2 on 20 May 1990 is one of the few Top 2s that match the official chart Top 2. However, it was the Top 2 of 13 May that is the exact match in the official chart, not the 20th.

Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

And grabbing perhaps a surprise number 1 in the summer of 1990 this is a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine. There's no point in explaining this to anyone. You either get it or you don't. For some reason I tolerated Roxette. I know they only had two types of song - fast ones and a slow ones but this was the best of the slow ones.

Roam by the B-52s is amazing, still listen to it these days... as for the rest, Enjoy The Silence is the clear standout (and let's face it, it would be a standout in ANY company).

Glad you like Roam, Dandy*. :D

More magic from Athens, Georgia. A much smaller hit in the official chart than Love Shack but still a great slice of alternative American pop. It tones down the usual wackiness for nice yearning harmonies and a melodiousness without losing the egde.

Depeche Mode - Policy of Truth

2 weeks

Back with a second number 1 of 1990 (not the only band to have two number 1s that year) with a song that would ordinarily be a career high for most bands but as this is Depeche Mode this sits in the background behind monoliths like Enjoy the Silence and Walking in My Shoes, among others. It's my second favourite single from Violator.

Produced by Flood it's layers build brilliantly - the breakdown (or sorts) must surely have influenced The Prodigy mid-period in some way. The rise before the chorus is such a rush.

Pixies - Velouria

1 week

And now a song from my favourite American heavy alternative rock band. Complete with the customary harmonies and distorted guitar sound. A fairly simple, descending, crunching guitar riff is gilded with a theremin to wonderful effect. It was the lead single from my favourite Pixies album, Bossanova.

It's amazing that only 13 or 14 months later Nirvana would be clasped to the bosom in Britain when this enchanting music was available.

Excellent start Tony - I never sent you that 90s playlist from our 90s night (need to do that).

Meantime though, loving "Enjoy The Silence", "Birdhouse In Your Soul", "Killer" are all brilliant. You could have let "Chime" have a week tho? :P Hoping for some more Orbital ("Halcyon"!) to come in this plus loads of other dance classics later in the decade.

Blue Pearl - Naked In The Rain

1 week

The music in this so just so good. There's a certain menace or danger to it. Really nicely layered, the break down sounds very much like something the KLF might do -I really wished they'd extended it. The vocals are the least impressive part for me - even though they're not bad. I didn't like this at the time because I ignored the wonderful music.

I found a decent 12" version on youtube.

GREAT IDEA Tony- I'm fully on board with this. I loved the "Violater" era and the singles were outstanding!
