May 16, 201411 yr Author OOgpT5rEKIU 31/10/1998 Alanis Morissette - Thank U 3 Weeks Wow. I never expected her to come back with something so considered and mature compared to the petulance of Jagged Little Pill. I expected something snarly, gimmicky and rocky. This somehow manages to be heartfelt, resigned and thoughtful. As usual, it's a psycho-babble melange lyrically but for once you don't feel like the voyeur and more like a confidant, a friend. It remains her best single. May 16, 201411 yr Author OuMUrAnmQ9g 21/11/1998 Mansun - Negative 4 Weeks Third single from Six and reason why I bought the album. Full of the now standard invention and quirkiness of Mansun music the lyrics were becoming more self absorbed. It's a tough call between this and Being A Girl for their best single. May 16, 201411 yr Author mTHjFeXmnHs 19/12/1998 Air - All I Need 4 Weeks And thus ends the recklessly great year for singles with what has to be one of the most beautifully constructed songs of the decade and the highlight of Moon Safari for me. At first the vocals reminded me of Beth Gibbon's from Portishead which made me dismiss it initially because it didn't have the grit of their music to back that up. That breakdown piece is just wonderful. Stuck behind Air for four weeks is the almost as beautiful The Power of Goodbye. May 16, 201411 yr Author Picking and ordering 20 of these for 1998 is not easy. This has been the first time in this countdown that the Top 5 didn't order itself.
May 16, 201411 yr some gems here, Manics I was mad on, a huge hit for me, shivers down the spine single. Loved mansun, Cardigans, madonna, Air, Robbie, Alanis etc... As I love both pop and indie equally with dance and all else, I'll add to the Viva Forever debate. It was a decent single but not earth-shattering, they did much better, they did worse. Mel C's solo career has been the most satisfying by far but they all had a sprinkling of decent singles here and there, and Emma had a magnificent number one along with Mel C's several great singles. B-)

May 19, 201411 yr Author I'm kinda sad starting 1999. I really enjoyed doing this. Any predictions for 1999?
May 19, 201411 yr "My Favourite Game" and "Thank U" are two of the songs that defined the end of 1998 for me - I really started getting properly into music and the charts by then and regularly got Now CDs for my birthday and Christmas. My first CD single though wasn't until 1999 and that is coming up next. :D I think I'm going to be rubbish at guessing your #1s from 1999. I'm hoping that there will be a fair bit of trance, how about: System F "Into The Blue" Chemical Brothers "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" New Radicals "You Get What You Give" Cardigans "Erase/ Rewind" Gouryella "Gouryella" Blur "Tender" Three Drives On A Vinyl "Greece 2000" Push "Universal Nation" Divine Comedy "National Express" Art Of Trance "Madagascar 1999" Binary Finary "1999" Liquid Child "Diving Faces"
May 21, 201411 yr Author The worst week of death of the whole decade occurs in 1999 where three of my Top 50 90s songs got released on the same day, all three of which are the peak of their specific genres. Edited May 21, 201411 yr by AnthonyT
May 22, 201411 yr Author There's no problem there. I haven't got very many pop songs in this final year. It was a decent year but it was no 94/96/98. It does hold the best number 3 of the decade (number 3 in this countdown)
May 22, 201411 yr Author Uyb67x1C2Dg 16/01/1999 Robbie Williams - No Regrets 2 Weeks I'm delighted that the appearance of No Regrets was noticed. It's simply a good song made great by the two Neils (Tennant and Hanon) on backing vocals. From 2:45 onwards is some of the best music Robbie has ever done. Top 3s 16/01/1999 1 - No Regrets - Robbie Williams 2 - Move Mania - Sash! 3 - All I Need - Air 23/01/1999 1 - No Regrets - Robbie Williams 2 - Move Mania - Sash! 3 - When You're Gone - Bryan Adams and Mel C

May 23, 201411 yr Author It's all chart music, Alex. There's a lot of other music that I dont like - I don't like opera very much or Irish country. I dont like American country very much but I can tolerate Dolly Parton's gorgeous voice and some Johnny Cash.
