The La's - There She Goes

3 Week

I read somewhere once that this should never have been a hit - it was the wrong speed for the era that it was released in, or something. Madness of course. There was clearly an appetite for this sort of jangle pop because, perhaps of the audience that The Stone Roses has cultivated. In any case, there should always be an audience for a classic like this. Like a lot of guitar pop of the early 90s it has to be re-released to be a hit.

Short and sweet.

Julee Cruise - Falling

1 Week

As unique and as wonderfully fresh as anything you could wish for. Written by Angelo Badalimenti and David Lynch for David Lynch's Twin Peaks series - the word haunting doesn't do it justice. Like a more radio friendly Cocteau Twins it soundtracked many a dinner party in 1990 and appeared on multiple chill-out and relaxation albums since then - both the vocal and instrumental version.

It couldn't hold on long before being cast aside by the upcoming career peak of the next number 1.

Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring

4 Weeks

Another shockingly low peak in the official chart for a classic song - it entered at number 36 - their lowest entry since thet started having hits and their lowest entry for over 20 years afterwards. Anyway, it peaked at 20 the following week.

A song looking back at friendship and a glorious opening to Behaviour. There's not quite a sense of regret but not of achievement either - as song of uneasy contentment acknowledging that it could have been worse. They left it out of their set list for a while in 1991 but fans demanded that it was returned and it became part of their encore.

Beautiful.

"There She Goes" - I always thought that this was a 1980s tune but it turns out it was a proper hit in 1990.

It almost re-peaked nine years later when Sixpence None The Richer did a decent cover of it.

Enigma - Sadness Part 1

4 Weeks

As in the official chart Enigma had to wait until 1991 to make it to number 1. Sadness is a quite intoxicating mix of beats, Gregorian chants, breathy female vocals, menacing, swirling atmospherics and er, pan-pipes.

It sounded like nothing else around.

Enigma!

I have such a soft spot for their music, I think I've got about 5 of their albums somehow(!) and the first two in particular were played to death by me in my early teens.

"Sadeness" is maybe a little bit kitsch for my liking but I sort of warm to it because it is somewhat hard to believe that it ever made #1 - it sounds so bizarre to hear a song with Gregorian chanting in it at the top of the pop charts.
Enigma were wonderful, and varied, topped my charts 4 times. Sandra, Mrs Enigma and the voice of several, also nearly did it with camp disco classic I'll Never Be Maria Magdalena. I've been contemplating such as that for BJSC for a laugh

Queen - Innuendo

3 Weeks

I don't know when I started liking this. It probably wasn't at the time it was released. I think it was the two solos that caught my ear first. Of course, the accusations of them trying to recreate Bohemian Rhapsody tainted Innuendo and I guess I agree that a band shouldn't try and re-create their most well known stuff - it takes a lot of luck and talent to out do your peak period.

In any case, I much prefer Innuendo. It's incredibly serious stuff. I've said this loads but Muse's whole career is encapsulated in both the solos and the vocal part that links them.

Hoping that "You Got The Love" climbs to #1 - that was one of my favourite songs of early '91.

Every cover since PALES into insignificance - especially love that bit from 3 minutes onwards where the vocals get all chopped up. :D

The Source featuring Candi Staton - You Got The Love

3 Weeks

Another song that didn't really catch my ear at the time of release but it's grown on my over the period since it came out. It just builds and builds until the brutal breakdown takes you back to nothing. I'm not always one for soulful vocals but I can't deny that they're great on this track.

I must put it on my list of 12" to purchase.

I'm not a fan of Florence's cover.

Yay! :D Though I note there is no room for "Do The Bartman" in your Top 3. :(

I'm not a fan of Florence's cover.

Me neither - massively overrated. And I love Florence. "Rabbit Heart" should have been her Top 10, but I remember BBC 1 spent most of 1 January 2010 endlessely playing it and hence it jumped massively up iTunes and then she murdered it with some awful rap version at the Brits a few weeks later. A dark moment in Florence Welch's career-to-date.

  • Author

I dont like Florence at all - far too shouty. Rabbit Heart and Cosmic Love were the only two listenable songs on her debut and What the Water Gave Me is quite good too.

Dog Days is awful.

I should mention - because I said I would - Chris Isaac's Blue Hotel was unlucky to be held at number 2. It's good enough to be a number 1.

REM - Losing My Religion

5 Weeks

Such a plaintive song. It spent a time in 1993 as my favourite single of all time. There's not a whole lot to be said except that I've dulled its majesty by playing too much over the years - a feat some would say is impossible. It's quite rightly held up as one of their very best tunes and that is not an easy job considering how consistent they were for over 20 years.

Totally agree about Innuendo, I under-rated it much at the time (to be fair it sort of peaked before radio noticed and then got ignored as it dropped) in favour of the other tracks in your Top 3...

Yay! :D Though I note there is no room for "Do The Bartman" in your Top 3. :(

and I agree with that too, though I dont hate her version...

Bartman is of course Michael Jackson mucking about for a laugh. He did have a sense of humour!

Anthony, your music taste is so wide.

From Pet Shop Boys and George Michael to Queen and all these dance # 1s. :o

Not really. This is all chart music. There's so much music in the world that doesn't trouble the chart. Music that isn't even recorded or released. My taste is commercial. We haven't yet seen anything truly weird.

And you forgot The Pixies.
