November 6, 201311 yr Author TU8YoWjuCjs 21/04/1991 The Shamen - Hyperreal 2 Weeks The Shamen are a bit of a strange band. I sorta like a lot of their stuff but didn't love much of it even though I should. This is saved by the really nice female vocals which take ages to come around in the mix I posted above. After saying all that - this is not their only number 1 in this rundown. Top 3s 21/04/1991 1 - Hyperreal - The Shamen 2 - Losing My Religion - REM 3 - Human Nature - Gary Clail on U Sound 28/04/1991 1 - Hyperreal - The Shamen 2 - Sailing on the Seven Seas OMD 3 - Anthem Njoi

At this stage the band was just Andy McClusky - the rest of the band having left in 1989 for various reasons. This was a huge comeback for him. They hadn't troubled the upper reaches of the charts in 5 years. It's a fairly broad-stroked melody, simple and probably not noticeable to everyone. It was followed into the Top 10 by Pandora's Box and then back to the wilderness of Number 50 hit singles with OMD for another few years. Top 3 05/05/1991 1 - Sailing on the Seven Seas - OMD 2 - Hyperreal - The Shamen 3 - Last Train to Trancentral

I preferred Pandora's Box myself. That's the follow-up record, not a bit of inappropriate referencing... :o

More chanting, train noises, crowd noises, horse noises, piano, vocoder, bells and....strings!!!! It's always a tough choice between this or What Time is Love for the peak of the stadium house trilogy. November 8, 201311 yr "Sailing On The Seven Seas" I was first introduced to on Now! 20 which I got for my 5th birthday and it was on tape - but that was one of my favourite tracks on it along with Moby's "Go" and U2's "The Fly". That was pretty much when I started getting interested in the UK Top 40 and Top of the Pops. Great to see "Last Train to Trancentral" - as I said earlier in the thread they play it when the players come out at Exeter City's St James' Park.
November 8, 201311 yr This is really interesting. It's quite a nostalgia fest for me as I did like the odd chart track back then. Although if I did this myself I would have to find out the indie charts for the time as Ride and Chapterhouse would have been #1 half the time and Mudhoney and Soundgarden the other. Yes I liked Grunge AND Shoegaze.
November 8, 201311 yr Author I do like the odd Ride song - Twisterella is amazing. We'll see if it make the Top 3 in 92.
November 8, 201311 yr Like A daydream is my fav Ride song but I doubt that'll broach your Top 3. Think it made something like #37 in 1990. Do love Twisterella too. Think I had that on a Cassingle! Saw them at Reading that year (still have the bootleg tape) as well as Pixies as headliners.

Jesus - I really have to stop sounding like a whiney bitter Pixies fan but listening to this just excites me sooooo much more than anything Nirvana ever released. Crunchy, distorted, punishing. Genius. I never really got Come Together or Loaded but Higher than the Sun just has such a beautiful verse and the music is so full of invention. It does remind me of The Beloved. Top 3s 30/06/1991 1 - Higher than the Sun - Primal Scream 2 - Planet of Sound - Pixies 3 - Jealousy - Pet Shop Boys 07/07/1991 1 - Higher than the Sun - Primal Scream 2 - Chorus - Erasure 3 - Planet of Sound - Pixies
November 8, 201311 yr Author epvADV9Vr2s 14/07/1991 Erasure - Chorus 4 Weeks This is when I really fell in love with the shimmering, melodic, effortless pop of Vince Clarke. The introductory single to their absolute best album of the same name, Chorus is aptly named. Environmental matters are the theme as Erasure attempt to get serious. Not that you'd notice with the sheer pop instinct that pervades every second. It's not even the best song on the album. November 9, 201311 yr Author bac8pAmJL08 11/08/1991 Bomb the Bass - Winter in July 3 Weeks Littered with world music touches - it wouldn't be out of place on an Enigma album - Tim Simenon (Bomb the Bass) had come a long way from the admittedly visionary Beat Dis and Buffalo Stance. Multi-layered and dramatic, some said it helped break trip-hop as a genre. November 9, 201311 yr Chorus! Obviously I never doubted it would be #1 here but it's great to see it none the less... Andy Bell REALLY cannot dance though can he?!!!
November 9, 201311 yr God I really got so fed up with Erasure. For a long time they had turned into the Status Quo of synth pop for me, every song just sounding like a rehashed version of the previous one.
November 9, 201311 yr Author There was a big shift between Wild! and Chorus. In the synths and the quality of melody.
November 10, 201311 yr There was a big shift between Wild! and Chorus. In the synths and the quality of melody. I think you really had to be a fan to notice that. I don't mind a bit of Erasure now and again but it took me a long time to get even that far. And I still can't get that image of a sweaty man in a PVC leotard and tights out of my head when I think of them.
November 10, 201311 yr Yeah but no-one's perfect! :) No, joking aside, it's an interesting thread. There's plenty of other stuff in your Top 3's that I love. Shame Unbelievable and the Beehives didn't quite make the top.
November 10, 201311 yr Author True. Perhaps Unbelievable deserved a week but There She Goes was so far ahead that it never stood a chance and then Falling/Being Boring came along.
