Erasure - Am I Right?

4 Weeks

And taking the Christmas number 1 from under Ms Amos' nose is Erasure with their wistful, seasonal ballad. God knows what its about bit it is mostly wonderful. I think this is the only time that three consecutive singles make it to number 1 in this run down.

Oh I absolutely love "The Fly" (partly just for finally knocking Bryan Adams off the top), IMO it was their last truly great single - they completely lost it after 1992, and by 2009.. well you only have to listen to the first few seconds of "Get On Your Boots" to realise they have become an absolute joke.

Great 1991 chart, now I am very interested to see what makes the top in '92. Odds on that "Motorcycle Emptiness" was #1 for a very long time here! :D

I'm listening to the Chorus album now in honour of your 1991 chart. :D

I still love it, a great pop album.

I got Chorus on vinyl this year. It is has one of the most beautiful artworks I've seen.

Lost it? They only found it 1991.

Looking at 1992 - there's 10 dance number 1s spanning 19 weeks.

Let's Go!

And the Lords of the Dance were back for a week with this storming piece of instant gratification. However, it wasn't that instant. I think it took about five years for me to like this. I suppose it just wasn't Charly but it's full of little tricks that keep the ears listening.

Could the could they have come up with a more menacing bassline? A whole lot darker than Naked in the Rain and a lot ravier too. I actually can't remember a Blue Pearl single that came after this one.

The sensual danger in the lyrics is palpable.

Love it.

The Sugarcubes - Hit

Another one weeker - this time the first time that Bjork entered my consciousness. Nice quirky indie with plenty going on and a Jame Bond-like phrasing in the opening. A gorgeous chorus about the ecstasy of being in love. Wonderful. It's better than more than half of her solo singles. I must get more from that period.

Cracking track. Loved The Sugacubes but her solo work bores me

Ooh I quite like "Everybody In The Place" (Fairground edit) - It was highly anticipated at the time as it was over 6 months since "Charley" when it got released and it shot to #2.

For me however, early '92 was all about one song and one song only.

Good verse. I never liked the whohohohoooo bit.

The melody for me I love, yeah the whohohohoho bits are annoying, but not as annoying as "Starships" (the song). :P

Your taste is broadly certainly more indie than mine was back in the early 90s though I now much prefer the likes of Depeche mode and the Sugarcubes. I think in early 92 I was listening to Lisa Stansfield, Ce Ce Peniston and "Achtung Baby" and shamed as I am now Right Said Fred!

Thanks Alex. There was a mix up with a few of those posts and I had to re-order them.

I know people mock 1992's charts as having no clear sense of direction and 'only 12 number ones' all year - but it is one of my favourite years, especially for dance.

You've got:

Future Sound of London "Papua New Guinea"

Gat Decor "Passion"

Opus III "It's A Fine Day"

Orbital "Halcyon"

The Prodigy "Out Of Space"

SL2 "On A Ragga Tip"

Utah Saints "Something Good"

and that's just the first half of '92.

Hit was an absolute peach of a song made all the better because that absolute goon Einar was hardly on it shouting incomprehensible gobbledygook.

This was one of the reasons why I loved Debut so much.

Still not as good as Birthday though.
