'Stay Another Day' is exactly the same deal - I don't see why it's remembered as a Christmas song when it has nothing to do with Christmas. I do love both of those songs though so I don't exactly mind their resilience, it just seems strange.

Agreed Bré. Neither of them appears in my lists of Christmas songs. (Standby for a whole list of Christmas themed hits nearer December 25!)

I wouldn't consider The Power of Love/Stay Another Day to be specifically Christmas songs, but I understand how some think that and I can accept that they have an association with Christmas (the video in the former/seasonal bells in the latter etc.).

It's worth noting that Fairytale of New York isn't technically *about* Christmas - it tells a story that just happens to be set at Christmas, I don't think anyone can argue that that's not a Christmas song, likewise with Let It Snow, Baby It's Cold Outside, Walking In The Air, A Winter's Tale etc. I think ultimately a song doesn't have to be completely about Christmas for it to be associated with it. It's a subjective thing but would The Power of Love/Stay Another Day would sound appropriate played in Spring?

Love a huge amount of them but have to say i hate last christmas by Wham.

I just downloaded the Cascada cover version :P so expect it to chart soon :P

Those bells sound quite Xmas-y, tbh.

Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie was also not meant to be a Christmas song although it does mention Christmas. It was meant to be an anti-war song and was a summer hit in France.

Where the bells at the end of the track added for the xmas release?

This makes alot of sense. They are culturally associated with xmas in the uk now.

Another question to ask is do people re-add them to their ipods in december along with mariah, the pogues etc? I dont know about yous but i certainly do. Also check the radio airplay charts each year!

I do. And once New Year is out of the way I delete them until 11 months later!

I don't delete them from my Winamp library so I don't need to re-add them. I've probably got about 100 Christmas-themed songs and if they come up on Random when it isn't Christmas time, well so be it.

I've got them linked as a playlist for when I need it over Christmas though.

Same here. Try to add the Xmas songs into the middle of my current music on the go!

I just leave them on all year. If you're sweltering in summer heat, it can be quite a boost to hear Fairytale of NY. :)

I cannot believe NO ONE has mentioned The Waitresses "Xmas Wrapping". Such a great xmas song, not overplayed but also familiar enough to joe public. No bugger knows it when I mention said name of song though. It's upbeat and positive but without the over-egging and eager-to-please vibe that nearly all over xmas songs contain.

You could say it's the perfect xmas song?!

I like that one, too.

Same here. Shame it was never a big hit, I don't think it even made the top 40.

It completely missed the top 75 when first released in December 1981 and reached number 45 when re-released a year later.

A cover version of the song by the Spice Girls did reach number 1 in 1998, albeit as the B side of 'Goodbye'!

What was the story with the release of Christmas Wrapping? Why did it perform poorly in 1981, and why then did it get a re release and perform as badly. They didn't really have a uk following did they?

I think the song just didn't catch on with the UK public at the time. I bought it when it was first released in 1981 but I don't recall it getting played that much that year though it did get a fair amount of Radio 1 airplay the following year.

It's one of those songs that seems to have grown in popularity over the years but that may be more down to it being included on one of the 1990s re-issues / revamps of the Now Christmas album.

Was Ze records linked to Island at the point of original release? Did Ze have sufficient distribution to get stock to shops? Did it not get played on radio so nobody knew of it's existence? It was sort of hidden away on Side 2 of "A Christmas Record"

Island did release the Ze catalogue in 1981. There was a fair bit of stock of the single available to buy in 1981, I had a Christmas job working in a branch of HMV that December (which is where I first heard the single) and we had quite a few copies of the single but next to no-one ever bought it :(
