July 17, 201410 yr At this stage I like this album more than Born to Die mostly down to the purer sound. Whether the melodies come through in time remains to be seen/heard.
July 22, 201410 yr Turns out her label wern't satisfied with the album. http://www.nme.com/news/lana-del-rey/78653 Del Rey revealed that Interscope and Polydor's dissatisfaction led to a six-week period when the record was in limbo. "I mean, I think there were people they wanted me to work with," said the singer. "I don't know who they were. When I said I was ready, they were like, 'Are you sure? Because I feel like you could go further.'" The album – Del Rey's third – was primarily produced by The Black Key's Dan Auerbach, who spoke of his frustration at label interference. "There was a lot of bullshit I'm not used to," said Auerbach. "The label says, 'We're not going to give you the budget to extend this session unless we hear something.' And we send them the rough mix and they f***ing hate it and they hate the way it's mixed. And it's like, 'Thanks, asshole.'… I think Lana put her foot down. Maybe it's normal for her, but it's not normal for me. Really rubbed me the wrong way. I got really defensive because I thought it was bullshit." He continued: "The story I got told is that they played it for her label person and they said, 'We're not putting out this record that you and Dan made unless you meet with the Adele producer'. And she said, 'Fine, whatever'. And she was late to the meeting, so while they were waiting, the label guy played what we recorded for the Adele producer and he said, 'This is amazing, I wouldn't do anything to change this.' And here's the kicker: Then all of a sudden, the label guy said, 'Well, yeah, I think it's great, too.'"
July 22, 201410 yr They were right not to be. It's a muddled follow up and it contains precisely one single, which was already released.
July 22, 201410 yr She's following up one of the biggest selling records of 2012, which sold because it contained hit singles. Her label is a business whose aim is to make money. Therefore it's not surprising or hnreasonable that they should demand a couple of singles from her.
July 22, 201410 yr It's not unreasonable, no. She already doesn't get on with her label, leading me to believe she's doesn't have the same interests as them. I believe she'd rather make an artistic statement than have hit singles. Not that albums that have fewer hit singles necessarily works better but I believe she's one of the bigger artists who likes to create a cohesive, consistent album rather than a cash-machine.

Therefore it's not surprising or hnreasonable that they should demand a couple of singles from her. I think she sold a lot of Born to Die/Paradise because of internet and media hype rather than the pair of #9 singles she had over here. That and the fact it's a great album. The Summertime Sadness remix was nearly 2 years later than the initial burst of hits. And she didn't even have a US singles chart entry til Young and Beautiful. She is an obvious album artist to me and not the next Adele. A completely different aesthetic.
July 22, 201410 yr Author It is true the album isn't very commercial, but I disagree that it only has one single, and especially that 'West Coast' is that single. It's nowhere near the most commercial song on the album.
July 23, 201410 yr I understand the record label's reaction from a commercial viewpoint (obviously she is a big name / money maker for the label) but making big hit singles is clearly not something she's overly interested in, and there's nothing wrong with that either.
July 23, 201410 yr It seems Interscope are just indoctrinated by money. Lady Gaga had disputes over her album last year with Interscope because they were looking for the next big hit and we're trying to make her seem more "conventionally beautiful" or something like that so it comes as no surprise there was tension between Lana and Interscope. Interscope are just so desperate for money, it's embarrassing to be honest. I mean obviously labels and executives expect certain numbers but when the music and the creative process is effected by dollar signs it just ruins the whole point of the album for me. Maybe it works for faceless female acts like Katy Perry but Lana is different for a reason and her individuality should be worshipped. I hate labels that don't encourage artists' to expand creativity when it comes to their music, but instead are just blinded by money. rant over.
July 24, 201410 yr Just bought the vinyl which gave me three bonus songs (Florida Killos, Black Beuaty and something else) which I didn't have on the CD so atm I am really happy!
July 26, 201410 yr Black Beauty is a great track. I havent bought anything to do with the new album, though, because of the record company milking every last drop from the cash cow. Record companies are sacrificing long-term artist loyalty for short-term big-thing mentality. It's the same principle behind the undoing of the investment bankers: suits are paid for apparent success, even if the long-term result is (artist) bankruptcy. A sane record label would spot that she's a long-term artist who will have fluctuating album sales depending on whether she clicks with the public, but will generate fan loyalty over a long period. They'd rather have a massive album and then drop the artist if they don't churn out another one. I'm still not going to buy the album till it's low-priced enough for the return to the label to be fairly insignificant. Lana doesn't need them now, she could go indie and get more respect. August 24, 201410 yr Really liking "Florida Kilos" at the moment  And in relation to her record label, I guess this explains why her first album felt forced. It was very good, but it didn't feel completely natural...
August 28, 201410 yr I absolutely adore Lana Del Rey but This era has felt like such a let down from her last one. This track is just tolerable and nothing more. No hate to anyone here though cause I respect Lana as a musician and artist. I just wish she'd back track for her next era.
August 5, 20195 yr What’s people’s thoughts on this an album? I love it but it’s one what I kind of go back to when I’m in a certain mood. I don’t listen to it the way I do Born To Die but I prefer the album as a whole piece to Honeymoon. Brooklyn Baby is pure lush  I skip the title track and Shades of Cool but the rest of the album is pretty strong. 8.5/10 I think it could’ve done better just the wrong tracks were pushed after West Coast.
August 5, 20195 yr I hate it and think it is just a moaning dirge. The title track is one of her worst EVER, as is its second single High by the Beach. We can keep Brooklyn Baby however.
