Easier in Bed

It's no surprise that this has finished as low as it has. 'Easier in Bed' is definitely the weakest song on 'Our Version of Events' (combining both the original and the re-release together). The acoustic version of the song however is SO much better. The backing track, I think, is what ruins the song, however with the acoustic version taking all of that out and stripping the song back it really does make something very beautiful. And of course, Emeli just gracing her voice over it with the beautifully written lyrics is fabulous for the ears.

Again, not a surprise to see this as low as it is. It is a very beautiful song and definitely one of the highlights from the album (well, they're all highlights x), but it took its while to connect with me, and I imagine it's the same for other people (unless some just find it dull and depressing (which is frankly IMPOSSIBLE)). The live versions of this, especially the version she performed on her tour in November 2012, are all beautiful. Such a stunning song, and you can just see that the song means so much to her when she sings it.

How apt for the time of year... Emeli recorded this song for the soundtrack of 'The Best Man Holiday', and it is such a fantastic cover. Very beautiful, much better than any others I've heard. This is a stripped back version of the song and not the whole shebang up-beat version that most will be used to (unless there are more ballad versions that I'm not familiar with?). She really should do a Christmas album or EP, because she's really good at this! Would love to hear her renditions of some of my favourites!

Iz, you will suffer for giving this a TWO! Up next is Emeli's stunning cover of John Lennon's song 'Imagine'. Emeli recorded this for a special montage that was used at the end of the London 2012 Olympic Games in August 2012, showing what exactly all of the athletes and sports-persons had done over the days the Olympics were shown. It was a very emotional clip; the one I remember most is Jessica Ennis crying when she realised she had won. Very touching, and the song pinpointed all of those emotions. And I'm not even afraid to say this... MUCH better than the original! x

Iz, I swear to god STOP IT (cries). This is definitely one of the most underrated tracks on 'Our Version of Events', but it's such a fantastic song! She doesn't perform this much life which is a massive shame because it's one of my favourites. It and 'Hope', I get the impression, are often overlooked on the album and not really paid attention to. What I love most about this song is the 3D sound at the beginning where it enters into the song. Such amazingness, and of course Emeli sounds on point in this and the lyrics are fantastic!

Iz officially BANNED from submitting any rates in the future. And I hope I've gotten Rabbit Heart's score right this time, oops. The second of Rudimental and Emeli's collaborations, 'Free', unfortunately falls out next. Such a beautiful song and the video to match it is wonderful! Love the story that it tells and the whole thing from start to finish is just very stunning. I think it's the videos actually without Emeli that I appreciate more because she can be such a beautiful story-teller when she works with whatever artist she is working with (Rudimental and Naughty Boy are just two examples). So amazing.

A Heart Can Save the World

Up next is the newest collaboration from Emeli and Tinie Tempah from his new album 'Demonstration', 'A Heart Can Save the World'. The two of them collaborated earlier in the year on Naughty Boy's début album 'Hotel Cabana' on a track titled 'Welcome to Cabana', and that is great! This sounds amazing too, and is a good way for Emeli to show her versatility. I think she's slowly converting herself back to urban / R'n'B roots, which is a good thing because she's really really good when she does do that!

Terribly criminal. Up next is by far and away Emeli's best song - 'Maybe'. A beautiful ballad talking (or singing x) about breaking away from a relationship and just letting go. Very emotional, and this is another of the songs that when Emeli sings it live you can tell she really means it. Middling scores should NOT have had this outside the top 20, be ashamed of yourselves, hm.

The Japanese bonus track from 'Our Version of Events', 'Tiger' is next. I fell in love with this as soon as I heard her performing it live on the tour (I hadn't really paid much attention to it until then). It's one of my favourites on the album but she sings it SO much better live. Puts so much power into it and it just sounds fantastic! Helps that there's a heavy backing track as well and it's just all so majestic!

Never Be Your Woman

This is an older track that Emeli featured on, but it was recently put on Naughty Boy's début album (or Emeli's second album if some people *cough* Bré *cough* like to pull funnahs x), 'Hotel Cabana'. Wiley's track. It's definitely not her best feature and it's by no means her worst (well, she doesn't really have any bad ones but this isn't near the bottom of the list IMO). Nice to listen to once in a while.

Alongside 'Lifetime', this is one of the tracks from 'Our Version of Events' that seems to be forgotten, or gets muddled up among all of the other fabulous songs, but it really is very beautiful. A stunning ballad about having hope (as the title says) and continuing to believe no matter what. Making reference to Martin Luther King in the song adds to the effect, and the lyrics seem to come straight from Emeli's heart as if she too can relate to having hope and just waiting it out for something magnificent to happen.

Before 'A Heart Can Save the World' (from Tinie Tempah's newest album 'Demonstration') there was 'Let Go', a fabulous collaboration from both he and Emeli. Her voice sounds fantastic in this. It's a great song. Again, not her best feature but still very very good! I think this is a sound she could probably benefit from experimenting with for her second album when the time comes.

Breaking the Law

Criminally outside the top 10 is one of Emeli's most beautiful ballads, a song that she wrote for her sister, 'Breaking the Law'. My favourite lyric from this song has to be "Ignore the alarms, ignore the police", followed by "I'll never stop breaking the law for you". A beautiful song you can relate to regarding that one person you'd do absolutely anything in your power for no matter the cost. The alternate version of this song seems to save it, according to most who have heard the song, but both versions are stunning.

No, just no. Should be in the top 5. Definitely one of Emeli's best songs alongside 'Maybe' and 'Daddy'. For a while this was my favourite song of hers because I could connect to it when I was going through a bit of a shit time. It still remains a song I can connect to very dearly, and it's one I'd go back to a lot of the time. Most people seem to just deem it a bit boring, but it's so so good.

This is another song that Emeli recorded for a film soundtrack this year. This time, it's from the film 'Trance' which featured James McAvoy. This is a stunning song, definitely one of her best of the year (although there are so many!). Honestly such a feel-good song. She also included this on the bonus EP of the American release for 'Our Version of Events', although the extended version of the song isn't quite as great as the shorter version. She sounds on top form here though, and her vocals in the chorus are just beautiful.

Hope is a lovely song :wub: No other major losses yet.

Probably the song that Emeli is most well known for and remembered for ('Read All About It, Pt. III' aside) - 'Next to Me' crashes out next, very unfortunately. I'd have thought this would have managed to sneak into the top 10, although that pesky -1 from Iz was probably the only obstacle presented. -- Such an amazing song, although something I pick up on every time I listen is that it seems to have been recorded quieter, or at least sounds quieter, than all of the other songs on the album, which is why I always have to have the volume at 100% when listening to it.

I'd forgotten I'd given so many low scores :heehee:

 

YAY for Clown being so low and, on the flipside, Mountains is definitely about 10 places below where it should be.
