Röyksopp

Running To The Sea (feat. Susanne Sundfør)

TECHNICALLY from 2012, but i was WELL into my EOY list last year before i even really picked up on this song. Susanne puts forward a powerful and emotional vocal over Royksopp's bleak and melancholic production, resulting in one of the more captivating progressive dance songs I've heard in a while

#5
Bastille

Pompeii

after noticing a song called 'Pompeii' would be the next single from Bastille, I ended up watching a acoustic performance of it, and was interested to see how well it'd turn out in studio form. So when it eventually premiered- beefed up with pounding electro beats, gregorian chant sections, and an ANTHEM of a chorus, it was impossible for me to NOT be hugely impressed. It really did sound like their big breakthrough hit (which indeed, it turned out to be just that)

The Kite String Tangle

Given The Chance

never before did i have such confidence in a bjsc entry <3 (and i was glad it paid off!) Moody dream-pop brilliance from solo Australian producer Danny Harley (who gives a stylish yet flawless vocal performance on here), featuring a killer chorus, accompanied by a huge wave of synths (the final chorus in particular just defines EUPHORIC). Pretty much THE anthem of autumn 2k13, really looking forward to more material from this guy!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Sacrilege

a tad surprised i'm putting this so high on my list, but ever since first hearing this back in Spring, it just continues to sound great! A slow-builder here, opening with a soft, whisperish vocal from Karen (while hugely contrasted by a vocal cut yelling "halo! round his head!!"), with the instrumentation kicking in to hand the song some extra pulse and adrenaline, eventually progressing towards a gospel choir, loudly chanting the track's main hook. Quite possibly my favourite from them yet!

so who has the #1 spot- DAFT PUNK, or SOAP&SKIN? ;o

#2
Daft Punk

Get Lucky (feat. Pharrell Williams)

one of those songs that really just defines "wide appealing", pretty much all the way from casual listeners to music critics. It's fairly easy to understand why this particular track just EXPLODED (despite the initial shock of it shooting to #1 within hours of release). A great vocal from resurging-star-of-2013 Pharrell Williams, riding amongst an utterly timeless guitar-riff groove, just one part of why this song is so endlessly enjoyable. A modern classic if there ever was one

- Anja Plaschg

#1
Soap&Skin

Sugarbread

well uh. where do i start? i guess the song can pretty much be summed up in three D's: dark, dramatic and disturbing <3 the intro especially, a woman's blood-curdling screams mixed with a pounding beat that SMASHES in, before slowly fading away, and then coming back even louder a few seconds later. Not to mention Anja's deadpan vocal performance, amongst some horns, strings and even a choir group- making everything just seem that much more EPIC. Maybe a questionable choice for a year-end #1, since i've only known it for a few months. But along with a 4-week stay at #1, i genuinely don't think there's a song that made quite as much impact on me as this throughout 2013. i can only give it my HIGHEST recommendation, and be sure to check out the music video too (for a few extra nightmares x)

Great to see someone else have an obscure number 1 beating Get Lucky to 2nd :D Have much love for a LOT of that list, Great in particular to see BIPP top 10 (such an inspired entry!), Wings top 20 (took a while to grow on me, but its great) & Wasting My Young Years top 30 (glad I'm not the only one that prefers that to Strong!)
Yes Seven welcome to the Get Lucky at EOY #2 club  Also great to see 'Bipp' top 10, one of my fave BJSC entries of the year although it missed out on my top 100. There's some other good songs here too!

Called it! :D

Great chart SevenSeize. Loving pretty much the whole Top 10 but my particular favourites are:

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege

6. Röyksopp (ft. Susanne Sundfør) - Running To The Sea

7. James Blake - Retrograde

8. Disclosure (ft. AlunaGeorge) - White Noise

I did also take a quick listen to Sugarbread... I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it.
