I think once again we're entering a period of the BRITs being equally as boring as the artists themselves. I should like Dear Darlin' to get Best Single but I realise Olly probably needs to look a little more like a bored teenager first for that to happen. *cough*JAKEBUGG*cough*. JT or Bruno for Best International Male too I think.

Olly Murs didn't release an album in the catchment period, the one he was plugging in 2013 didn't get anywhere near the same critical acclaim as Jake Bugg's debut and 'Shangri La' is, if anything, even better.

As for Lorde and Miley, the Brits have to at least try and retain some respectability.

I'd find nominating Miley more respectable. It would show they are not desperate to please.

It'd be pleasing a different crowd.

Both achieved a #1 single (I know Miley has two, but that was due to bothering to release another one before the album) and their albums are in a different league.

Completely agree. She should at least be on the list in place of Lorde (who's there because of one song) & possibly even P!nk.

Interesting that you mention Pink there when her album and biggest single outsold all of Miley's stuff last year. In fact, she had the biggest selling album for an international female last year. I know it shouldn't be based on sales but Pink has definitely earned her nom, particularly since it was she who was overlooked in the category last year...

The BRIT awards are primarily about music at the end of the day and whilst Miley has been a massive talking point in pop culture in 2013, it's not necessarily been for her songs has it? They merely just contributed to her overall persona and THAT VMA's performance.

It would be acknowledging the impact she had on the year, both with her music and everything related to it. Choosing Lorde and P!nk while snubbing her is simply ensuring people don't think they're not "credible" and I don't think the people who would have said things like that are worth pleasing.

The impact she's had hasn't really been because of the music, as Chez said, so why should it get her nominated for a music prize?

Because if you take away the media frenzy you still have a Gold album and two singles that are either over 400k or soon to be.

Which weren't deemed good quality enough obviously. Sales aren't everything.

Except they are - you should know that yourself as you've often mentioned Dido being too irrelevant to be nominated. The noms are always driven by sales, relevance and supposed credibility. Miley would have fallen down on the latter.

Take away the media frenzy and she wouldn't have had any of that.

If it were so driven by credibility then One Direction wouldn't be nominated either. They're there because they're too big to ignore, which Miley clearly isn't.

That doesn't mean the music itself isn't popular. You don't buy songs for their videos.

No, I don't mean credibility in terms of being indie darlings. I mean credibility in terms of being respected by the public in general. One Direction being nominated is not a threat to the ceremony's credibility to the braindead, Miley is.

And Dido has none of the above. She certainly hasn't fallen down on one in particular. I can't really see the comparison since surely Miley is very relevant. It's more likely that in comparison to the other nominees, her work has been deemed poor quality.

Perhaps it was a poor comparison, but I still don't quite see why you think it more likely they judge on quality alone than anything else. Miley is the only hugely relevant artist they doubt the quality of? I mean Jessie J is nominated among others...

I didn't say they judge on quality alone just that they don't judge it solely on sales.

Many artists are missing here, not just Miley. People seem upset Little Mix and Rebecca Ferguson have been snubbed. I just don't see why it's an outrage that 5 other females could be considered to have had better albums than Miley in the last year.

Well no, but the controversy caused by the videos created more publicity, which can only really boost sales unless it's completely negative.

Is the John Grant nominated for best internation male the John Grant who used to be part of the Czars?
