1990 was the year of the year of Italia '90 and of those infamous tears on the pitch during the semi final, but the tearful one pulled himself together in time for the year's christmas chart battle.

1991 – Shaft – Roobarb And Custard (^10)

 

From 1992, and for quite a few years, the record labels really started courting the kiddies with a least one christmas chart contender being themed around a cult kids show or tv craze from that year.

 

1992 – WWF Superstars – Slam Jam (!6 previous week at 4)

 

1993 gave us possibly the best novelty christmas number one ever! Well 10 year old me thought so anyway...

 

1993 – Mr Blobby – Mr Blobby (Xmas #1)

1994 – Mighty Morph’n Power Rangers – Power Rangers (!8 previous week 4)

 

This one is certainly a bit odd... no what I mean 'Arry?

 

1995 – Frank Bruno – Eye Of The Tiger (^28)

 

I said they would be back, and here they are!

 

1996 – The Smurfs – Your Christmas Wish (!13 previous week 8)

 

1997 and it's time for Teletubbies!

 

1997 – The Teletubbies – Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh! (!2 previous week 1)

 

A novelty hit from a adult cartoon was big in 1998...

 

1998 – Chef – Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You) (*2 + new years #1)

 

And in 1999 a speeded up Disney track and a singing hamster helped to get this into christmas chart.

 

1999 – The Cuban Boys – Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia (*4)

 

The next two years are a bit lean on novelty, so I've selected the same act for both years.

 

2000 – The Tweenies – No.1 (^8)

 

2001 – The Tweenies – I Believe In Christmas (~9)

 

This is a little something I have prepared as a celebration of Christmas Chart Day 2013. Nowadays it's normally a given that the winning puppet from the high-trousered one's 'talent' show will be Xmas #1, but historically a whole host of weird and wonderful novelty hits entered the chart battle, and still do to this day. So here is one novelty chart hit from every Christmas Chart Battle, covering the years 1970-2013, with one exception. I'm going to fly through these quite quickly this afternoon but feel free to comment on any of these, add any relevant information about them, suggest other novelty hits you would have chosen over my choices etc.

 

We start with 1970:

 

1970 – Clive Dunn – Grandad (^6 - later number 1)

Not Christmas #6. Number 2 (revealed on Tuesday 22nd December at 12.30pm on Radio One). Remember Music Week/Record Retailer missed a couple of weeks, in those days & the w/k ending dates came from the week, that it was published. Not the week the chart was announced by the BBC.

 

And the same for 1974. The Wombles were Christmas #2 not #5). It was revealed on Tuesday 24th Dec 1974, with Johnnie Walker.

2002 was the year of Popstars the rivals, and the top 2 were the winning boy and girl bands, with the girls on top, but in 3rd place were a couple of cheeky girls who had also appeared on the series.

 

2002 – The Cheeky Girls – Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) (!3 previous week 2)

 

2003 saw a christmas chart contender from celebrity stalker Avid Merrion, and it were proper bo too!

 

2003 – Bo Selecta – Proper Crimbo (*4)

 

A year later Avid was back with two of his lady friends

 

2004 – Merrion, McCall and Kensit – I Got You Babe (*5)

 

21 years on from the Frog Chorus it was time for another melodious amphibian, only this one was crazy.

 

2005 – The Crazy Frog – Jingle Bells/U Can’t Touch This (!6 previous week 5)

 

And a year later he was back...

 

2006 – The Crazy Frog – Last Christmas (~16)
