I wouldn' t have called him a *big* name - he's not on the Lady Gaga/Rihanna/One D level - second tier perhaps.

 

He's definitely a big name in the world of R&B and rap, maybe he's not as well known amongst the general public as people like that but I'd still call him a big name.

Sam Smith must have sold a fair few ep pre orders now its been in the top 100 since january & he has the single pre order doing well too so he could have a shot at no1 next week imo!

Re:Drake. Don't forget that the sales are so minimal at the moment, especially on iTunes, that you need only extra 200-300 copies of album sales (or even less) to jump that high.

Drake isn't as famous as Lady Gaga, but I'm not sure which I'd call the bigger act in record sales these days.

As well as obviously a big impact from the BRITs, The Full English seem to have benefited from the coinciding Radio 2 Folk Awards.

 

Great to see the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Rudimental and Bastille smashing from the BRITs effect but perhaps the thing I'm most pleased about is that James Blake is back in the top 100 after the few seconds of promo he got from being a British Male nominee. He must have sold literally tens of copies from that promo :wub:

It may also have been helped by record of the day status on radio 1 today but I suppose it wouldn't have made people buy the album!?

 

Great to see a reasonably early album release for Pharrell, a new song from it when it's released could take over from Happy when it's released!

He's a rapper that got popular from featuring on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' latest single 'White Walls'. Didn't realise he was big enough to get an iTunes #1 album though! (it definitely won't get anywhere near #1 officially)

I would have said 'known' rather than actually 'popular', since WW has hardly a massive hit. I guess it depends on current iT sales levels as to how 'known/popular' he actually is, though...

Yeah, the sales level for a Top 30 single overall versus an iTunes Number One album is hard to judge. And people who bought the Macklemore/Lewis album will have heard the track too.

He's actually growing to be very popular and has been one of the big "ones-to-watch" hip-hop artists of the year. On blogs everywhere, a lot of talk going around before the album leaked and has just released what is looking to be a huge album in the US + a heap of critical acclaim.

 

The genre doesn't traditionally produce big selling albums now i don't think, so to even get top 10 on iTunes here is an accomplishment <3

And most new rap artists aren't really heard by the mainstream until they are mainstream if you know what I mean?!
