#012 Autre Ne Veut "Counting" (1,116)

Debut: 25th November 2012

Chart Run: (2012 chart run...)-01-01-01-02-03-05-06-06-10-12-17-22-27-33-34-39-42-48 (18 weeks)

Missing out on a Top 10 YE placing due to it's chart run straddling the 2012/2013 period here is the song that dominated my life at the start of the year. Autre Ne Veut very loosely translates from French as ‘I want no other’ - and is the pseudonym for 30 year-old New York musician Arthur Ashin; his self-titled debut was released in 2010 and in February last year his second LP Anxieties was released. The first single to be taken from it "Counting" was actually written for his aging grandmother and with the main theme of the album exploring Arthur's own anxieties, it explores his anxieties about losing his grandmother. It is a brilliant track packed full of rapid arpeggios, saxophone squeals, and booming bass drum hits - making it one of the most accomplished and exciting singles of the past year!

#011 S O H N "The Wheel" (1,117)

Debut: 21st July 2013

Chart Run: 35-19-13-08-04-01-01-02-03-04-07-10-15-20-27-33-36-43 (18 weeks)

Apparently there is some morse code hidden in the beat that repeats through the track, and that morse spells out his name! I remain unconvinced however (not that I know anything about morse code). "The Wheel" was the first track I heard live by S O H N - the single he opened his set with at Latitude in July. The track starts of very minimalist with him looping his vocal over and over, and then slowly adding his beautiful lyrics over the top and then additional percussion and a pulsating beat that drives the track. I don't know why I love it so much, but I only have to hear opening lines "I died a week ago, there's nothing left" followed by the chorus "All this searching for something that's not real" and I'm hooked again.

The Top 10 may or may not follow after dinner depending on if I've set my house/self on fire.

#010 James Blake "Retrograde" (1,126)

Debut: 10th February 2013

Chart Run: 34-10-03-01-01-01-02-04-06-09-13-16-19-24-29-39-47-50 (18 weeks)

Onto the bizarre now, and it was a little bit of an odd coincidence that this video (featuring a meteor crashing to earth and lighting up the sky) preceded by a matter of days, the Chelyabinsk meteor - the biggest meteor to hit the Earth since 1908 and provided dramatic images as it lit up the southern Ural skyline in February. The song itself is the most R&B track Blake has written so far, and was inspired by Blake's relationship with Warpaint guitarist Theresa Wayman. "Retrograde" is a beautiful, etheral and emotive track that uses again some heavy synths and bass competing against his powerful vocals. Blake explained: "When I write, 'We are alone now,' it's about exactly that, so for that reason people are relating to it. Maybe they have somebody or they want to be talked to like that. It's funny when you write a love song; you suddenly realize why 99% of songs are love songs, because the reaction is so uniquely forceful."

#009 London Grammar "Wasting My Young Years" (1,167)

Debut: 28th April 2013

Chart Run: 40-22-13-10-08-06-04-01-01-03-05-10-15-20-23-27-35-39-43-49 (20 weeks)

London Grammar were one of the most talked about and hyped bands of the past 12 months, with their debut single "Hey Now" released in late 2012 and garnering extensive praise. "Wasting My Young Years" was their big pop moment - the biggest on their debut; combining the intricate piano hook that runs from the start of the track and haunting vocals from Hannah Reid that lead so perfectly into a beautiful and powerful chorus make it an essential anthem. For the video, a rig was built housing 625 pinhole cameras in a 360 degree loop. By exposing an entire roll of 35mm film in a single instant they were able to capture the panoramic images. "So the idea becomes looking at one moment from many perspectives, as opposed to looking at many moments from one perspective, like most music videos," said the band. "We really wanted to capture that essence of someone falling or being trapped."

#008 HAERTS "All The Days" (1,177)

Debut: 26th May 2013

Chart Run: 48-24-13-04-02-01-01-02-04-06-05-09-13-16-20-26-33-39-46 (19 weeks)

There are so many facets to this song that make it so enjoyable and highly addictive. You've got the anthemic percussions that build into and lift the pace, the flawlessly lavish synthesizers and most importantly, the angelic vocals of Nini Fabi and the return of the heart-wrenchingly gorgeous guitars that lifted "Wings" into a cult classic. It is impossible to conceive that this album (when it eventually arrives) can be anything other than utter perfection. They are a band that sound like they should be everywhere and yet for the time being they are an unknown treasure, here's hoping that changes this year.

#007 Arctic Monkeys "Do I Wanna Know?" (1,207)

Debut: 23rd June 2013

Chart Run: 34-20-11-04-02-04-02-01-01-03-05-05-09-14-21-27-33-38-46-50 (20 weeks)

Alex Turner continues to write fantastic rock songs, and the new album illustrates that as well as anything his prolific career to date has produced. 5th album AM nodded towards his influences by poet John Cooper Clarke even recreating his poem 'I Wanna Be Yours' for the albums final track (it inspired a 15 year old Turner at school) and first released from that LP was the percussive thud of "Do I Wanna Know?". I didn't love it on first listen, infact I thought the brawny, undulating riff was just a poor imitation of great 2012 single "R U Mine?" - but after a few weeks I got it, the Josh Homme stoner rock sound... that riff, I was hooked. It became one of their biggest ever hits - hitting #11 on the UK singles chart and gave the band their 8th #1 on my chart. LOON ALERT.

#006 Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams "Get Lucky" (1,244)

Debut: 21st April 2013

Chart Run: 26-09-05-01-01-01-02-02-03-03-05-06-08-08-13-21-34-48 (18 weeks)

The *ANTHEM* of 2013. It was pretty much everywhere and I still never tired of hearing that guitar lick from 70s legend Nile Rodgers. I don't think anybody was ever expecting this at the start of the year, not only a slight return from their disappointing Human After All era, but an all-conquering massive comeback from the French duo, which saw them having a worldwide smash that has sold over a million in the UK alone! "Get Lucky" stormed to #1 in May and gave the band their 3rd number 1 on my chart, following a 10 year gap between June 2001 chart-topper "Digital Love" and previously to that the 2 weeks at No. 1 for "One More Time" in November 2000. The track features the guitar work of Nile Rogers, the lead guitarist and founding member of the 70s band Chic; a music producer who inspired by Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams. Speaking about the track Pharrell said "I was trying to slice a really good moment and keep it on repeat. 'Up all night to get lucky' means you don't want the night to end. You want that golden moment on repeat, like the music repeats."

#005 Ellery James Roberts "Kerou's Lament" (1,251*)

Debut: 8th September 2013

Chart Run: 37-26-19-08-01-01-01-01-01-01-02-03-05-07-13-21-25* (17 weeks... so far)

WU LYF's flame burnt far too bright I think and it was probably inevitable, though a great shame we only ever got 1 album from them before the split - though it was with renewed optimism when I found out that they were recording again (even though without Ellery James Roberts) but when listening to Los Porcos there was definitely a spark missing - it just wasn't the same. Step forward "Kerou's Lament" a kind of call to arms for a revolution; sort-of appropriate considering the rhetoric around Politics in 2013. It had everything I loved WU LYF for, anthemic crescendos, fully orchestrated synthesizers, soaring horns and even borrowed the beat from Clams Casino's soaring "I'm God" instrumental. The end result was an angry protest that you felt almost there with him as he chanted "To the powers of old, to the powers that be: You f***ed up this world, but you won't f*** with me." The power of his music to move me - that's why I love this so much!

#004 Disclosure ft. AlunaGeorge "White Noise" (1,264)

Debut: 27th January 2013

Chart Run: 39-22-11-04-01-02-03-04-06-09-10-13-19-23-26-28-31-37-37-40-40-43-48 (23 weeks)

Despite 2013 being a relatively disappointing year for new music (on the whole); there have been a surprisingly large number of excellent big UK chart hits - which this next song demonstrates nicely. The combination of emerging UK talents Disclosure and Aluna Francis from AlunaGeorge came about in 2012 after AlunaGeorge supported Disclosure at their show at Brixton's Plan B in late 2012. Their mutual admiration for each other's music resulted in them collaborating on this song, the wonderful "White Noise" - a bold pop/dance hybrid which showcases Howard and Guy Lawrence's impeccable knack for structure, and which shot 28-2 on the UK singles chart in February after significant interest built in the duo after their debut hit "Latch" (see: #36). As a response to critics saying that they would kill the 90s house revival, Disclosure responded "I’d say to him, would you rather be in your car and listen to Nicki Minaj, David Guetta and Avicii or White Noise?". The vocals and lyrics of Aluna are similiarly barbed in places "If you wanna get tough/ Let's play rough." A total joy, and one of this years finest songs for sure!

#003 St. Lucia "Elevate" (1,274)

Debut: 28th July 2013

Chart Run: 37-22-16-12-08-03-01-01-01-01-02-03-03-05-08-11-17-27-34-42 (20 weeks)

Jean-Philip Grobler seems to have been involved in the majority of the biggest hits of the year on my chart, and features on not 1 but 2 Top 10 hits (he produced HAERTS "All The Days" at No.8) "Elevate" hooks you in from the opening synths, and then doesn't let go as the sugary vocals from Jean-Philip Grobler combined with the killer bass line that sweeps in during the chorus and towering vocal chant that dominates the final 1/3rd of the record. Altogether you've got one of the most addictive tracks the summer and one of my favourites from last year. Impossible not to dance to or feel uplifted by, and is certain to be huge if only some radio play would happen. Maybe 2014 will be his year?

#002 CHVRCHES "Gun" (1,289)

Debut: 9th June 2013

Chart Run: 37-17-06-04-02-01-01-01-01-02-05-07-07-10-15-21-28-36-44 (19 weeks)

Asking me, or indeed anyone to choose their favourite CHVRCHES track is an impossible task. You immediately turn to the impossibly beautiful "The Mother We Share" or perhaps the dark and angry "Lies", but for me it just has to be the brilliantly uplifting and kaleidoscopic joy that is "Gun". The reasons are many, perhaps it just chimed with me at the right time, but "Gun" came out of nowhere in June (the band previously hit #9 the preceding November with the aforementioned "The Mother We Share" and #14 earlier in the year with the pleasant enough but pretty average "Recover"), then "Gun" came along which was just perfect - the crescendos are immaculately timed, Lauren's sweet and flirtatious fury is evident with every syllable as she tries to do her best Cyndi Lauper impression. The result is a magnificent pop song, one of 2013's finest.

wooop Elevate  definitely one of the more uplifting songs I've heard in 2013. Hope it gets a chance to become a hit in future somehow!

#001 Jagwar Ma "The Throw" (1,409)

Debut: 17th February 2013

Chart Run: 38-18-09-05-02-01-01-01-01-01-02-04-06-09-12-16-26-33-35-39-45 (21 weeks)

Yes it was my number 1 of the year - am I that predictable? Well yes is the short and correct answer to that question. In the end, despite a solid charge by "Kerou's Lament" it is the Australians who rule the roost - not surprising given their insane 5 week run at the top through late March and April by the Sydney trio.. making a more than impressive debut. The bands name apparently originates from the name of the guitar that lead singer Gab Winterfield plays, 'Fender Jaguar' as well as band member Jono Ma. "The Throw" is a delicious slice of early '90s throwback, particularly reminiscent of the Madchester scene of 1989/1990 perpetuated by the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays. When the beat/bass comes in at around the minute and 5 second mark, that's when it is impossible to keep yourself from dancing! It is also an Unknown Pleasure entrant from earlier in the year, though funnily enough I had already heard it before it was entered. Saw the band live this summer and was not disappointed, they have got a lot to offer I think! I'm off to dance uncontrollably to this record now. BYE

Wow, that #1 threw me, not really a big fan of it, but the rest of the top 10 is just amazing with the exception of Ellery James Roberts, to be honest I haven't heard it, mind you I do prefer The Mother We Share over Gun but I'm not that fuss over it, as the album is just a masterpiece, shame they couldn't strike the singles chart with just a minor dent, as their album is probably one of the best albums of 2013 along with London Grammar.

You should have done, in Unknown Pleasures :P

Some nice stuff in here Doctor Blind, Get Lucky, Wasting My Young Years and Do I Wanna Know being my major highlights towards the top. The latter took an age to grow on me but when it clicked I became addicted.

amazing #1 and so much love for ellery. would definitely be my #1 if i was ordering!! apparently i need to give elevate another chance though, none of his songs since the first EP have hit me properly really :(
Amazing chart. Great to see You & Me so high as well, it just defines the feeling of a relationship for me.

An excellent chart and have enjoyed reading the commentaries. It's excellent to see 'The Throw' so high in so many people's chart, an easy number one of the year for me and likely to feature very highly in a forthcoming countdown part inspired by yourself.

It won't surprise you to know I have mp3s of 37 of the top 40, the only ones I don't are 'Lessons', 'Tennis Court' (though I did, I got bored of it and deleted it at the end of the year with about 50 other 2013 songs I don't have much desire to listen to now) and 'She Will'.
