January 6, 201411 yr With regards to songs: Billboard & Soundscan refer to downloads as digital (Digital Songs). There is a separate physical chart, but those sales are minuscule (Hot Singles Sales). Almost correct. HSS chart is not a physical only chart. Digital singles bundles count toward to this chart as well.
January 6, 201411 yr Why are "digital" songs reported separately? Is there still a physical market in the US? (And of course, CD's are digital anyway!) I guess back when it started (in 2005?) it was worth having a separate chart for downloads. Now Digital Songs is almost the same as the overall sales chart, but there's probably not much point in stopping the chart or re-naming it.
January 6, 201411 yr The charts are set up for the industry. Although it doesn't amount to much, CD singles still exist. The last time I saw a chart last summer, it took 86 copies to make the top 50. Not sure why the industry still wants it, but it is there nonetheless
