one of the most fondly remembered genres of music, highly distinctive style and good time pop. but was it really that good?

i guess it depends upon when you got into music, as glam recruited a whole new fanbase. i didnt like it, in general.... as a fan of 60's music i found that glam was too frivolous, prefering the more serious music of the 60's.

i couldnt stand the fashion, i couldnt understand why people wanted to look like naff clowns and be strongly camp, although most werent gay. this put me off the music, which upon re-examination i admit was pretty good pop. slade, sweet, t rex in particular produced good pop.

but the thing about glam..... nearly every big glam star 72-75 was a washed up, failed 60's star.

gary glitter, alvin stardust, bowie, slade, t rex, sweet, rod stewart, elton john ... i dont think that before or since has a genre been dominated by 'flops'...

disagree that Bowie,Rod and Elton were flops as they continued long after 75 recording and touring to a large fan base to this day, agree with Paul Gadd and Shane Fenton though

Bowie has influenced many an artist from 1975 to 2006.

Was Bowie that much of a flop in the 60s though...? I thought he had one or two hits in the 60s, and he started gathering momentum from about '69 onwards....

My favourite music of all time is glam rock as it takes me back to my junior school days.

In my opinion the best music came from 1972-1975 .

The Sweet were a very underated group & were brilliant live.

T Rex made some good tunes earlier on but towards the end kept on repeating the formula of their songs.

I got into music at the tail end of the glam era, so I started off preferring the acts who were taking the place of these acts in the charts. As a result, I never cared for the music or the acts. That said, the first group I liked were Mud, hardly anything better, but at the time they seemed a lot better than any of those glam rock acts!

My brother likes T Rex but I can't stand them. Maybe the odd song is listenable but that's it...

I like Slade's christmas song, classic.

it was Marc Bolan's voice as much as anything else. That warble used to annoy me, and I still find it off-putting.

shut up you pillock... you have completely defeated your own argument.... pmsl...

i watched the full monty and was surprised that they hadnt slotted another song over the part where the boy is watching his dad and his mates strip to gary glitter.

i thought it might have come out the same year as the glitter arrest then i looked in my film book and realized the film was a few years earlier.

but the thing about glam..... nearly every big glam star 72-75 was a washed up, failed 60's star.

i was thinking about this the other day when i was reading about one of alvin stardust's sons had become a headmaster of this school (Pate's Grammar School) and when you worked out what his age would have been in about 1973 (about 31), you think they are so old to be a new popstar as you wouldnt get that happening today (except perhaps for a very gay dance thing artist???) as thats something like robbie williams starting out now with rudebox as his debut hit.

gary glitter too

both stardust (shane fenton) and glitter (paul gadd) did have minor chart success in the early 60's, but yes, you are right, imagin if take that only had a few minor hits in the early 90's, then robbie came all big now... as an aging bloke! thats the comparison.

both stardust (shane fenton) and glitter (paul gadd) did have minor chart success in the early 60's,

oh didnt know that about glitter, however looked up the shane fenton hits (as well as adam f's hits  ) in my book after reading the thing about his son.

and what was even more bizarre he had a top 20 hits too (think it was no 19 in 62 or something) :o :o :o

glitter used the name 'paul raven'..

will look out for it in my book
