why are sales so low in France?? i swear they're more populous than the UK.

why are sales so low in France?? i swear they're more populous than the UK.

I've been doing some research into this and honestly I couldn't give you an exact answer but I have found one relevant fact and that is that France is a huge country for streaming, second behind only Sweden (which is similarly obsessive). French people seem to have an aversion to paying for music and now that streaming has provided an easy legal alternative to doing so, it's easier than ever to avoid buying.

 

YTD sales updated.

The French entertainment market has gone through a lot of change and as such the French are still adapting - Virgin Megastores went into administration last year and in July closed all 26 stores in France, The French Virgin Megastore MP3 site is still going and held a 51% market share in 2013.

 

FNAC is the only record shop chain left here now and they have diversified into loads of other product areas so their focus is not just on music - When Virgin stores closed down the French were still not fully on board with downloading etc, so I think that's had a big impact on sales.

YTD post updated and I found an interesting article - album sales in France rose 1% in 2013 in comparison to 2012. It's easy to say "Oh yes well Stromae will have accounted for that" but his album will have sold about 0.4% of the year's total so I think we can say things are looking pretty OK in France right now :o

Adverts for Stromae's album have been all over the main French channels this week - Will be interesting to see what impact it will have on sales

Because it really needs more exposure :lol:

 

Also I just found out he's planning to release the album in English-speaking territories, including the UK and US :o Won't say it's likely to work out but if any Francophone artist can do well worldwide it's Stromae and I did always think 'Papaoutai' sounded like a major hit...

It's like Stromae is the only singer in France! It's all I ever hear being played!

 

The album is already available on Amazon and iTunes in the UK - Would be good if they tried to push it but I'm sure whatever they done it wouldn't be a hit :(

There will be an extra sale for Stromae this week from me - They have released a '2014 Limited Edition' :kink:
