February 25, 201411 yr Great countdown Grebo. Thanks I thought the Arctics were going to take the win to be honest. I don't mind the Chvrches track but am in agreement with Richie on it being slightly out of place in the list
February 25, 201411 yr Ugh, that number 1 is hideous....and it is chart pop. no it is not since when is synth pop the same as chart pop? do you classify purity ring in the same bracket?
February 25, 201411 yr I'm going to crown Arcade Fire the winner as 'The Mother We Share' would've been nominated for a 2012 if one was run for that year, it was a 2012 single after all.
February 26, 201411 yr no it is not since when is synth pop the same as chart pop? do you classify purity ring in the same bracket? Not really, Purity Ring have a slightly more 'dreamgaze' (is that what they call it?) sound, whereas the vocals on CHVRCHES remind me far more of what I hear on commercial radio. It's not cheesy pop, but it is chart pop, albeit from the more sophisticated end. But alternative? Nope, about as alternative as The Ting Tings or La Roux.
February 26, 201411 yr no it is not since when is synth pop the same as chart pop? do you classify purity ring in the same bracket? Since about 1979. (semi) Joking aside you acknowledge it's a form of pop music yourself by referring to it as synth pop. As far as I'm concerned there's no such genre as chart pop - isn't that just different forms of pop that chart? Look at Lady Gaga, One Direction, Maroon 5 and Katy Perry. None of them sound particularly similar but they're all chart pop.
February 26, 201411 yr No matter what it is, it's so similar to so much of the "alternative" music being pumped out of various parts of Europe for the last 5 years. See also idon'tknowwhatthehellami, M83, etc. Yeah - I went there. Edited February 26, 201411 yr by Sinner
February 26, 201411 yr Author So does anyone want a Song of the year 2012 seeing as it got missed out?
February 26, 201411 yr Sorry for not voting, I had it bookmarked for ages but just kept forgetting about it. Bad excuse ~ Very good top 5, as a song 'The Mother We Share' would be one of my top choices here but I agree with the people who have said 'Reflektor' would have been a more 'appropriate' winner given the forum this is in. Then again, BuzzJack's definition of 'alternative' is very liberal based on some of the stuff posted in this forum / what is labelled 'indie' by certain people in BJSC. And I was responsible for Lorde being in this list when she isn't really much more appropriate at all. So I shouldn't complain :P
February 26, 201411 yr Absolutely amazing top 3, all within my best songs of the year  I'd call The Mother We Share alternative synth pop, not 'indie' perhaps but it's accessable without being mainstream (which is what I imagine most 'chart pop' refers too)
February 27, 201411 yr Yeah, go for a 2012 one. Thanks for organising this one, it's interesting to see how these go, even if I never agree with the outcome.
