Posted August 31, 200618 yr In my opinion popstars are chaning there music to R'N'B/Hip Hop constantly. Its not about the music anymore they are changing their style to fit in and sell as much as they can e.g Jessica Simpson from 'I Wanna Love You Forever' to her whole new album.

August 31, 200618 yr Deffinately, nearly every major artist has had to incorporate hip hop somewhere in one song at least to help there sales. sometimes it can be just 1 song like Shakira, but sometime artists can totally change like Nelly F
August 31, 200618 yr I think reinvention is the key to success though. Everything goes 'out of fashion' eventually, and those acts who haven't changed their musical directions are inevitably the ones who aren't around anymore. This is why people like Madonna are still going strong - constantly reinventing herself and experimenting with new styles of music. Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake have all done the smart thing and bought out new albums with fresh new sounds - and they've done really well out of it. :D
August 31, 200618 yr One could argue that British R&B star Jamelia is moving in the opposite direction.
August 31, 200618 yr Some def are unfortunately. Thank god Anastacia doesn't. She sticks to her own unique style.
August 31, 200618 yr That's half the story, but pop stars and singers should be people who are interested in music, so are bound to become interested in new sounds and trying out something new. What's worse is when they never let their sound progress at all.
August 31, 200618 yr Some def are unfortunately. Thank god Anastacia doesn't. She sticks to her own unique style. I think Anastacia had changed her direction slightly. The Anastacia album really emphasised the rocky part of her Sprock genre. Again, it was her best selling album to date - I think in general once an artist has established themselves they benefit by changing their musical direction slightly.
September 1, 200618 yr All artists do it to some degree, some just do it better. You have to keep some of your own style/influence consistent and you also have to be innovative and hit the trends early. I think Nelly Furtado is amazing - her first album was a melange of accoustic pop with hints of R&B, her second album was folky but with hints of pop and country, and her third album ingeniusly incorporates latin, hip/hop, even electro. The bad examples are when artists chase after a trend a year or two too late. Jewel's 2003 "Intuition" sounded like late 90's pop and lost her much of her fanbase. Spice Girls' "Holler" was a generic Darkchild production that belonged on a Destiny's Child CD 2 years earlier. More recently, Jessica Simpson has gotten dreadful reviews for "A Public Affair" because it sounds reallly dated.
September 1, 200618 yr loads are chainging to sell, Nelly F is one shocking example, I liked her songs until the man eater one(although it still reminds me of Oats and Hall's Maneater with a bit of hip hop stylee thrown in) she made me cringe watching her shaking her booty and trying to be like all the other hip hop female singers, I didn't rate the song at all yet strangely the song made number 1?. As I hate hip hop it really disappoints me when an artist sacrifices their own style for sales by jumping on the band wagon, I am not interested in sound alikes, or singing being reduced to sex talk. I didn't even realise shake your rude box was Robbie when I hear that!. or the need of the women to sing suggestive songs and wriggle their scantily clad bots, although it works for a lot of people :D
September 1, 200618 yr You are absolutely right. It is just lazy to copy other artists and I think Robbie has gone the wrong way. Rudebox is just awful and another waste of space.
September 1, 200618 yr It's not just confined to the world of Pop though - look to The Rasmus and Evanescence as two pretty big examples as well. "Reinvention" and "Incorporating new sounds" is one thing, but merely changing your style just to 'fit in' to a scene and shift units is really just lame, I cant respect any band or artist that does that... Someone cited the example of Madonna earlier on, well, I would say she's more of a leader than a follower, there's a difference, she's kinda set the trends for others to follow and she's always managed to maintain her own identity as an artist. Nelly Furtado is just fitting in to a scene, the whole "electro" thing is in just now thanks to people like Goldfrapp. Furtado is merely, to quote Kurt Cobain, a '"radio friendly unit shifter" who has just totally lost any individual identity she may have had....
September 1, 200618 yr How true. Look at Mariah Carey - Christina Aguilera - Gwen Stefani I used to be a fan of all of them but since they've changed, i'm not a fan of any of them now.
September 1, 200618 yr Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani are as pop now as ever. Definitely agree on Mariah Carey though. Nelly Furtado must be setting some kind of trend if everyone's copying 'Maneater' right now.
September 1, 200618 yr It's called REINVENTION dear. Nelly Furtado has changed her sound on every album did everyone start to say she sold out when she did folk music? No. It's only because it's R&B people are kicking up a fuss.
September 1, 200618 yr I don't know why everyone is saying Mariah has suddenly changed to R&B as well, she's been R&B/Hip Hop since 1995 with the duet with ODB. So it's not exactly NEW is it?
September 1, 200618 yr There ain't many David Bowie's around. Now there's an innovative market leader.
September 1, 200618 yr Her first 2 albums were relativly simmilar in sound and the only change seemed like a natural progression. Loose was a total 180. That is not re-invention, dear. That is selling out. Madonna re-invents herself but if she suddenly went jamacian because thats whats "in" at the moment I would say the exact same thing about her as I have Nelly. She is just following a succesful trend Edited September 1, 200618 yr by Ozx
