There should be more hits in the Retro Lounge, so with apologies to Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie for nicking the idea, here's a Chain Challenge.

RULES:

1. You must find a link with the previous record, and state it clearly - this can be as tenuous as you like, using a word, a producer, a sample, a previous duet, a song. Be inventive!

2. You must love the record you nominate.

3. The record should pre-date 2010 (it IS retro after all) and must not be an artist that has already been used (so no nominating of 25 Girls Aloud records allowed!)

I'll start the ball rolling with a classic I love to bits, a perfect record:

Spare Snare covered 'Wired for Sound' for a special Christmas single in 1995 (then, in true contrary indie style almost immediately released another song of the same name early in 1996) as part of a special release schedule from Steve Lamacq's Deceptive Records. Easily the most famous act on that label were Elastica who won a lot of fans early on with the track 'Vaseline'.

We had one of these going a few years ago but it eventually died a death. Good to see somebody having another go. I could have avoided the obvious but I'm not going to so here goes. Elastica singer Justine Frischmann was originally a member of Suede.

BTW, even though there is no fixed date for Retro, I think 2010 is a bit too recent. Perhaps 2000 would be a better cut-off point.

I was originally going to go for 20th century only but thought it might be fun to get younger fans interested in retro stuff. Try for 20th Century then, but not TOO worried if it spills over (it is almost a decade and a half ago now, ancient to a 15-year-old  )

I'm going for the obvious too: Bernard Butler, once of Suede, gave us the best affirmative of all time in partnership with David McAlmont with....

If anyone gets daunted by links, it can be anything - a song or group with yes, no, in the title, a record that was in the charts then, something produced by Bernard Butler, another recrod that peaked at 11, for example. Anything!

Sadly, McAlmont and Butler only ever performed one gig. The good news is that I was there and also enjoyed the support act, Edwyn Collins. Here then is his former band, Orange Juice.

Sadly, I only ever saw Bernard in concert, but Orange is adjacent to Red in the rainbow spectrum as taught at school: Richard Of York Gained Battle In vain.

Obviously that means a wealth of Red Songs, and I choose this one, cos it's a great 60's-flavoured soul chugger B-)

Red Light Spells Danger by Billy Ocean

Billy is not technically an Ocean, but the Pacific is...which leads us nicely to a house classic from 1989

808 state were signed to Trevor Horns ZTT label, also on the label was Seal - one of my faves of his Future Love Paradise

Seal's Kiss From A Rose featured on the Batman Forever soundtrack. Another gentleman who featured notably on a Batman film soundtrack was Prince. He released a few records in the past so here's one from him and a friend.

enjoying the choices and links B-)

David Bowie's real name is David Jones. Another David Jones of the 60's was The Monkees Davy Jones. Here's his greatest record as lead singer...

Daydream Believer

Blondie's 1981 single Rapture paid tribute to several of the stars on the fledgling New York hip hop scene including Grandmaster Flash (Flash is fast, flash is cool....) so here's Flash being somewhat less fast, but still very cool with Melle Mel from the following year.

Grandmaster Flash were on the Sylvia Robinsons Sugarhill label, Sylvia had a US hit with Mickey with Love Is Strange in the 50's, anothe act who had a hit with a song with starnge in the title was Echo & The Bunnymen and their cover of the Doors song.

Click on Insert Special Item (you can't do this from the quick reply box), select Youtube video then paste the youtube ID (just the bit after the = sign) into the box.

great choices so far.

Must. avoid. obvious....nooo, I can't let the opportunity pass to put on one of the greatest 3 minutes of anyone's life.

Echo Beach meet the Beach Boys, God Only Knows...

The Beach Boys suffered from some family feuds over the years. Several other bands have include feuding brothers and I have chosen The Kinks
