Posted March 4, 201411 yr This august a record held by Mariah Carey was broken by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams - 'Blurred Lines' got the greatest US airplay audience impression of all time, reaching a peak of 284.411 million on the scale BuzzJack uses. With the international success of 'Happy' being seemingly unstoppable and its audience impression today reaching 208.063 million (+ 5.816 million on the day before), I have to wonder if it's possible he'll break what is essentially his own record :o 'Happy' has incredibly wide appeal and is gaining just as fast as 'Blurred Lines' was at this point so personally I think Pharrell breaking the airplay record is not only possible but likely. What thinks BuzzJack?
March 4, 201411 yr Is that figure an accurate one? The figures posted on BuzzJack are usually a bit off from the 'official' figures aren't they? I could very easily see it surpassing 'Blurred Lines' nonetheless. Given the subject matter of that song it's very surprising that it got so much airplay really (even if the song itself is pretty radio friendly), 'Happy' is a more expected airplay megasmasher.

It's not the official figure but it is the BuzzJack equivalent of the highest official figure, and therefore the easiest figure for us to compare to because we can see 'Happy' on the BuzzJack scale whenever we like. I was surprised it was so huge too, I actually posted at the time that it was a very random huge hit. If you look at songs like 'Happy' and 'We Belong Together', they have huge potential crossover appeal even to adult contemporary airplay whereas 'Blurred Lines' I thought was quite a bit more format-restricted.

That didn't stop "Pumped Up Kicks" from getting huge amounts of airplay!
March 4, 201411 yr I definitely think 'Happy' has a fantastic chance of doing so, it's still getting massive updates despite already being top of the airplay chart!
March 4, 201411 yr That didn't stop "Pumped Up Kicks" from getting huge amounts of airplay! 'Pumped Up Kicks' didn't get near as much publicity for its subject matter though. I'd bet there are a lot of people who are completely unaware of what 'Pumped Up Kicks' is about and just know it as 'that catchy indie pop song that was on the radio all the time a while ago', whereas I doubt many people at all don't know what 'Blurred Lines' is about.

Yeah, I suppose you're right - though I do like the delicious irony of PUK being played so much in gun crazed America oblivious to its key message!
March 4, 201411 yr The figures posted on Buzzjack are Mediabase. The figures used by the the Hot 100 are Nielsen BDS. Highest weekly audience - all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS: 228.9 million, "Blurred Lines," Robin Thicke (featuring T.I. + Pharrell) (Aug. 31, 2013) 212.2 million, "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (July 9, 2005) 196.3 million, "Irreplaceable," Beyonce (Jan. 20, 2007) 192.4 million, "No One," Alicia Keys (Dec. 22, 2007) 189.6 million, "Let Me Love You," Mario (Feb. 5, 2005) "Happy" was on 139 million last week.
March 4, 201411 yr Hope so. I was more surprised Happy wasn't a hit last summer when I downloaded it immediately after watching Despicable Me 2, and based on one hearing, and then charted it that same week. Wish I'd stuck it in BJSC in retrospect just to amuse myself, who knows might even have qualified (or been disqualified)...

That's strange, 'Happy' actually looks to be further away by this measure than the Mediabase one, even though the Mediabase numbers are much bigger. An 89 million gap is a really tall order for 'Happy', I'm less confident it'll make it now.

March 19, 201411 yr Now up to 210m on BDS. Just missed displacing Mariah from #2. Surely it will break the record next week.
March 19, 201411 yr Author I like how someone has voted "yes" since you posted that  I think the only question now is how far he can go :o 240 million?
March 26, 201411 yr Now up to 219m on BDS and at #2 above Mariah. He only went up 9m this week and he's 10m short of the record. I don't think he'll break the record next week as he's starting to slow down.
March 26, 201411 yr Could he actually miss the record? :o Possibly ... Unless today's Mediabase update was a blip.
