Posted September 3, 200618 yr BBC1 soap Neighbours will be targeted by Channel Five when its rights come up for renewal next year. Ramsay Street has been a regular fixture on the BBC since 1986. But the contract for the long-running Australian show, which propelled Kylie Minogue to fame, is understood to be due for renewal in the middle of next year. There will be a brief period when other bids will be able to be put on the table and that is when sources say Five will strike. With Neighbours made by Grundy and distributed by Fremantle Media - both owned by Five's parent, RTL Group - it comes as little surprise the broadcaster is planning a raid. The channel snatched Australian soap Home and Away from ITV five years ago, and it is thought that if it won Neighbours Five would broadcast it afterwards at 6.30pm in a 'Down Under' double bill. Five has become increasingly competitive in chasing other channel's plum properties. It has also been linked with a bid for ITV1's The Bill, made by another of its colleagues in the RTL stable, Talkback Thames. The Five director of programmes, Dan Chambers, said: "We're always interested in new and existing properties if they fit with Five." from Media Guardian. (Subscription Site) Any thoughts? I don't watch Neighbours anymore, but I remember one of the best things about it was the lack of ad breaks.
September 3, 200618 yr I heard about this a while ago. If Neighbours goes to Five it will go downhill so much, ratings will plummet. I highly doubt they'll get The Bill either.
September 4, 200618 yr Noo, this cant happen . I like Neighbours where it is (creature of habit me) :(.

Do people have some sort of mental block when it comes to Channel 5 or summat and will refuse to watch Channel 5 just on a general principle.....?
September 4, 200618 yr Yeah, Neighbours & the BBC just go...Five showing it? Euw, no! So, you would actually stop watching one of your fave progs just because it moved to Channel 5?? It's the SAME programme, what's the diff where it gets shown....? I dont get it.... I dont particularly like HMV or Virgin much, but if they had a CD or DVD I wanted for cheaper than Amazon or Play.com, I wouldn't fukkin' care, I'd just buy it.....

Also, not everyone can receive Five.
September 4, 200618 yr I cannot get FIVE so this would be annoying. They were also planning to put episodes on early on bbc 3 like e4 do with Hollyoakes. Neighbours was good today as i missed it for the past 2 weeks. Look at Sky falling of her high horse.
September 4, 200618 yr I would understand the fuss if it moved to Sky One or whatever but its very easy for people to press 5 on a remote instead of 1
