Posted May 9, 201411 yr Not long to go now then until Roy announces his squad. Here's my predictions for who I think he'll take. Goalkeepers: Hart, Foster, Forster Defenders: Johnson, Cole, Baines, Jagielka, Cahill, Jones, Smalling, Walker Midfielders: Gerrard, Carrick, Lampard, Sterling, Lallana, Henderson, Milner, Wilshere Strikers: Rooney, Lambert, Sturridge, Welbeck, On Standby: Ruddy, Caulker, Barkley, Cleverly, Carroll, Shaw, Defoe. My only real problem was whether he would take 4 or 5 strikers. I'd take Carroll personally, and I think he would have taken Rodriguez if he wasn't injured, but now I think he might take an extra midfielder instead.
May 9, 201411 yr There's absolutely no way he'll go with that defence if that's who's available, I can't see us taking 8 when Jones and Smalling are in there. It would be utterly daft to too. From your squad I'd take out Walker for Barkley, and there's no way Ox-C will stay back if he's fit which looks likely, him in for Lampard probably. Edited May 9, 201411 yr by RabbitFurCoat

You'd expect he's a cert.
May 9, 201411 yr Goalkeepers: Hart, Forster, Ruddy Defenders: Baines, Shaw, Cahil, Jagielka, Jones, Smalling, Walker, Johnson Midfielders: Oxlade-Chaimberlain, Lallana Sterling, Gerrard, Carrick, Cleverley, Henderson, Barkley Strikers: Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert That depends on if Wilshere is fit enough. If he is than Him in and Cleverley out
May 9, 201411 yr Author Goalkeepers: Hart, Forster, Ruddy Defenders: Baines, Shaw, Cahil, Jagielka, Jones, Smalling, Walker, Johnson Midfielders: Oxlade-Chaimberlain, Lallana Sterling, Gerrard, Carrick, Cleverley, Henderson, Barkley Strikers: Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert That depends on if Wilshere is fit enough. If he is than Him in and Cleverley out I think Roy would take a half-fit Wilshere. He loves him. I can't see Cleverly in the 23-man party at all. Even if there is injuries, I think there are players he would pick before him (Milner and Lampard).
May 9, 201411 yr Goalkeepers: Hart Forster Foster Defenders: Johnson Walker Smalling Jones Cahill Jagielka Baines Cole Midfielders: Gerrard Henderson Wilshere Lampard Lallana Sterling Oxlade-Chamberlain Milner Forwards: Rooney Sturridge Welbeck Lambert Standby: Ruddy Shaw Caulker Barkley Carrick Defoe Carroll Personally I wouldn't bother with Walker though since Jones/Smalling could be considered RB cover. Would bring Barkley in instead. Possibly Carrick for Lampard too. Not fussed on Cole vs. Shaw
May 10, 201411 yr I'm just going to go with the squad I'd pick because I have (slightly misplaced) confidence in Woy. Hart, Foster, Forster Baines, Cole, Cahill, Jagielka, Jones, Smalling, Johnson Carrick, Gerrard, Henderson, Wilshere, Barkley, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Sterling, Carroll Standbys: Ruddy, Shaw, Davies, Lampard, Barry, Defoe, Lambert (these aren't necessarily the ones I'd take)
May 11, 201411 yr Author Cole not picked, refused standby. That just shows his arrogance. To be fair I would have taken him over Shaw. Shaw is going to be an excellent player, but right now I would take Cole over Shaw. I suppose though, giving these players tournament experience is something the FA panel will want to do, so I can see the logic of taking the likes of Sterling/Shaw/Barkley even if there are better and more experienced players.
May 11, 201411 yr Given that England's chances of winning the thing are close to zero it makes a lot of sense to give younger players some tournament experience. The experience will do nothing for the likes of Ashley Cole but could improve Luke Shaw's chances of doing well in future tournaments.
May 11, 201411 yr Press reporting that the squad will be: GK: Hart Foster Forster DF: Johnson Cahill Jagielka Jones Smalling Baines Shaw MF: Gerrard Lampard Henderson Wilshere Lallana Sterling Milner Oxlade-Chamberlain Barkley FW: Rooney Welbeck Sturridge Lambert Happy with that I actually thought Hodgson would have selected Cole simply because he would have been around as a standby otherwise, which would have been awkward in the initial training camp It makes sense to take Shaw though since the 2nd choice probably won't play, so the experience of being around the squad would be more valuable to him
May 11, 201411 yr That's probably the exact squad I'd take, might have took Cole but I'm not too fussed either way. Carrick has been poor for Utd this season, I'm glad that there's not both of him and Lampard in there. No need for an 8th defender, Lambert fully deserving of a place. Would've been nice to see Rodriguez and Walcott in there but I think 2 injuries (so far!), one of which to a player that would've only just squeezed into the squad, is pretty good. Fingers crossed for no more.
May 11, 201411 yr Author I felt for Rodriguez - I'd have certainly taken him over Lambert. Reckon we might have taken five strikers and took one less midfielder. That's a decent enough squad. I don't think we'll do very well (mainly cos of Woy) but we really do have the makings of a very good spine of a team that would be building for the the next Euros, and the Russian World Cup.
May 12, 201411 yr Thinking about it, Lampard in current form is just as strong a pick as Carrick and provides more of a goal threat even when he's sat deep. Just feel sorry for Carrick really - people have finally talked him up the last couple of years and then he has his worst season in about ten years on the eve of his last shot at being first choice for a World Cup. Glad we're only taking seven defenders, I'd have gone for Cole but can understand the logic in taking Shaw. Don't think it's arrogant for the former to quit at all.

Maybe not arrogance, but to quit when he's not first choice.. that's not right. I see the logic, but he didn't want to be on standby. The line he's giving, and I expect the media will follow, is all about youth and the future. Which I suppose is quite right, as when we inevitably fail the finger will be pointed right back at the FA especially after the stupid League 3 idea.
May 12, 201411 yr Michael Carrick was overlooked when he was at his best so it's no surprise he's not going now after not having a great season. I can't help but think Carrick's workrate is always unnoticed, his experience will be missed in the World Cup. I'm a fan of Carrick and think he gets a lot of undeserved hate. I still don't think Hodgson is good enough to be the England manager and I fully believe England will fail to qualify past the group stages now. Cole has just tweeted that he's retired from International Football. Ashley Cole @TheRealAC3 3h I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now. 😢😢Ashley Cole @TheRealAC3 3h We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything Ashley Cole @TheRealAC3 3h Like me or not, trust me it's hurt me to stop playing for my country #proud and #honoured 🇬🇧
May 12, 201411 yr Author I think England will get through the group stages, through a huge slice of luck, but yes Roy Hodgson is not good enough. But the flip side of that is there are no other English managers out there who have the experience or mental resolve to take on the job. I expect we'll stick with Roy until 2016 and they'll try to groom Gary Neville or Gareth Southgate as the next manager. As for Carrick, he's always been one of those solid but unspectacular players. He doesn't score enough to get the plaudits or get noticed on Match of the Day every week. Feel slightly sorry for him as he's been overlooked before, but Henderson/Barkley have been better all season.

May 12, 201411 yr Author It's funny to see just how far Cleverly's star has fallen. He's always been average.
