May 11, 201411 yr Author I've just looked at the countries who gave points to San Marino in the semi-final and I was very surprised to see that in nearly every country, Valentina's points were thanks to the televote rather than the juries! Most of the juries in countries that gave San Marino points didn't put 'Maybe' in their top 10.

Most of the juries in countries that gave San Marino points didn't put 'Maybe' in their top 10. Everybody loves the underdog! Also, by my calculations - 'Rise Like A Phoenix' got 65.31% of the maximum points available and so therefore has the 27th best performing ESC song of all time (and it's a lot higher if you take out the songs from before the '12 points' scoring system.
May 11, 201411 yr Saying we all thought it would be a close voting, Conchita got more points than Emmelie and with fewer countries voting!
May 11, 201411 yr In the second semi final every country voted for Austria and they were in the top 5 of every vote except for Germany! But people only vote for their neighbours and political friends in this contest don't they? HA.
May 11, 201411 yr Author I've very quickly looked over most of the rankings that the UK got and overall it seems that it's quite even between the number of countries who ranked the UK higher in the televote than the jury and vice versa. Obviously this disagrees with Adam's post above, but I'm including countries where we didn't receive top 10s from either the jury or televote in that statement.
May 11, 201411 yr We were in the top 10 of 5 countries' televote but 11 top 10's in the jury vote. But yes we got a lot of 11-19th on both sets of votes.
May 11, 201411 yr Author Someone on ESC Nation (so thank you to them!) has worked out the final results if only televoting was used. I don't know if they are 100% correct, but I don't see why they shouldn't be: 01. Austria 311 02. The Netherlands 222 03. Armenia 193 04. Sweden 190 05. Poland 162 06. Russia 132 07. Switzerland 114 08. Ukraine 112 09. Romania 103 10. Hungary 98 11. Belarus 56 12. Iceland 46 13. Denmark 43 14. Greece 43 15. Spain 41 16. Norway 39 17. Finland 39 18. Montenegro 33 19. Italy 32 20. Germany 31 21. United Kingdom 29 22. Azerbaijan 26 23. San Marino 18 24. Malta 17 25. Slovenia 15 26. France 1 Looks like it wasn't just the UK and Ireland juries completely stopping Poland from getting points! Very surprised at Azerbaijan only coming 22nd in the televote showing that they can definitely fail to qualify if they have a below average entry (which they haven't had yet).
May 11, 201411 yr Austria a complete landslide then! 20. Germany 31 21. United Kingdom 29 dear GOD. What DID go so badly wrong for us?
May 11, 201411 yr Semi Final 1 split votes: TELEVOTES Netherlands 130 Hungary 103 Sweden 98 Armenia 96 Ukraine 96 Portugal 65 Russia 57 San Marino 49 Iceland 43 Lithuania 38 Belgium 31 Montenegro 26 Azerbaijan 15 Estonia 13 Albania 6 Moldova 4 JURY Netherlands 130 Sweden 125 Hungary 122 Armenia 102 Azerbaijan 94 Ukraine 88 Montenegro 74 Iceland 68 Albania 64 Estonia 61 Russia 57 Lithuania 27 San Marino 25 Belgium 24 Moldova 24 Portugal 17
May 11, 201411 yr ouch! we really didn't connect with the public did we. :( well at least the juries are useful for something as missing the top 20 would've been really embarrassing. I think us performing last didn't help, as some people have either fallen half-asleep or have made their mind up about who they're voting for by then. Also the performance wasn't as good as it could've potentially been as people have said.
May 11, 201411 yr Shocking that we did so badly - very undeserved. *looks for excuses* - maybe because she sang last and her number took so long to appear on the tv on each run through of entry numbers, it had less exposure and the last time it was shown the phone lines shut almost straight away after, thus not giving them enough time to vote. But in reality it probably just wasn't good enough. I think she gave the best performance and made the song come alive - which made us get caught up in the hype. The song did take me a while to connect and some parts of the song were quite weak lyrically... We were hoping for the song to be reworked a little originally, remember? The Bbc just needs to keep trying to get a perfect song. It's all they can do... I'm glad conchita won but at the same time, he won for a political message - the real 'song' winner is the Netherlands which is being reflected on itunes. Edited May 11, 201411 yr by Jack89
May 11, 201411 yr I can live with the fact that we were not the winners but 29 points and 21st in the televote? I don't want to sound like a bitter old ESC fan iv been watching the show since I was 10 and used to record it on VHS back in the day lol but I really think the Big 5 should have a slot in the semi's along with the automatic qualifying host country - For the countries that do perform it gives them great exposure and songs can make more of an impression as people get to hear them twice. On French TV last night there was a huge TV special/debate about the contest - It really wouldn't surprise me if 1 of the Big 5 pulled out soon - France and the UK are struggling year after year.
May 11, 201411 yr Wow just 21st for us in the UK, I absolutely loved the song so was disappointed with our result, although the performance wasn't as powerful as I had expected. Poor Poland, the jury really slaughter them then. I'm surprised Russia did so well, regardless of the politics behind it I thought the song was kinda weak.

That's actually a really good idea, there's effectively 6 automatically qualifying acts so 3 one semi final and 3 the next. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the big 5 stopped either, it would be a massive shame too. Does anyone know if contestants from other countries do a European tour before the show? I remember Jade and Andrew Lloyd Webber visited a lot of countries in the run up to the event and it seemed to pay off. I would like our contestants to do that again and show Europe we aren't really that bad.
May 11, 201411 yr I feel like we will see a big 5 drop out soon too - I don't think it'll be the uk though. The big 5 need to sing in the semi final intervals for more exposure and tbh id quite like the jury vote to be got rid of - Poland situation is exactly why it shouldn't be used. May 11, 201411 yr ^^ Most contestants do a promo your especially in neighbouring countries - Molly visited 2 countries this year!

That'd lead to protests tho as the big 5 will get the best of 2 things. They qualify for the final AND promo in the semi. It's either, you can't have both imo Regarding Jury voting. They should stay as they've lead to an increase in quality imo and less of the gimmicks. Make it televote only and the gimmicks will return and the contest will go back several years Edited May 11, 201411 yr by *Tim
