I wouldn't be averse to scrapping the big 5 actually. I think having 12 qualifiers from each semi would be fine, Molly would have qualified out of it anyway by the looks of it. And the semi exposure would definitely be worth it, especially as the UK keep sending growers to the contest and not instant songs.

It's only stuff like Josh Dubovie and Engelbert which wouldn't have qualified at all for us, and it would have hardly been a sad loss.

That'd lead to protests tho as the big 5 will get the best of 2 things.

They qualify for the final AND promo in the semi. It's either, you can't have both imo

Yep I get why that would annoy other countries... Maybe if the big 5 sang a live portion of their song as a kinda medley with the other 4 countries so that they got a little more exposure... Rather than a video snippet

Ain't BBC3 going to become an online service, won't they need another channel to transmit the semis.

I also like the top 5 to be shoved in the semis, and just have the winner getting the automatic spot in the final.

BBC 4 or even BBC 2?

^^ Most contestants do a promo your especially in neighbouring countries - Molly visited 2 countries this year!

Thanks for that info, I'm glad Molly did at least something, but we do need to do more. It worked for Jade so I don't know why it wouldn't work again. Unless these countries don't want us on their shows.

Germany won comfortably only 4 years ago and they didn't have the exposure from the semi finals. If the Big 5 get an automatic spot in the final I don't see why they should perform in the semis, they get a clip played in each semi already.

If you've got a viewer who watches the semis and have already got their favourite, but then sees a Big 5 performance which blows them away they will vote for it. The Netherlands proved this year that a great performance will do a song wonders.

To be honest I don't think a lot of the public are aware of the semis been transmitted on BBC3, a relation of mine did say "I was not aware the semis are still transmitted during the week" or they don't bother watching them, so shoving the big top 5 in the semis really doesn't make much difference.

The viewing figures should reflect this.

This might be true for the UK, but possibly not in other European countries (which is what matters if we'd like more votes). I'm unsure of how it works, but with most countries having to compete in the semis to get their act through I imagine their semi final broadcasts get more views than ours. I'm just presuming though...

How would that be different from the snippets that are being played twice? Surely it wouldn't make any difference?

If the song is good enough and the right snippet is chosen, people will be curious and google the song.

There's plenty of pro's in the big 5.

- automatic qualification

- the first to pick a half

- if the song and performance is good enough you've got the "shockfactor" aka what The Netherlands experienced

- Exposure twice via semi snippets (obviously not as effective as a performance but effective enough with the right song)

I don't see why the big 5 would have such a huge disadvantage. I mean the others only perform once more so the difference isn't THAT big (I mean Spain did very well this year)

I don't think its that hard to transmit the semis on BBC1, after Eastenders, usually there is dirge on between 8 to 10, Holby City could be shoved to Weds for a week. In grand scheme of things it should work, at least the semis would get more attention.

Europe is a lot bigger than the UK ;) Viewing figures for the semi finals are low here however across Europe there is a lot of interest in them when a national act is performing!

I think these are right (just been a sad little bast*rd and added them all up.)

And now I've just realised I've wasted two hours of my life as they are on Wikipedia. :drama:

Poland was robbed!

(Appreciate the effort Oliver!)

I remember when Jade did Eurovision - she promoted on television shows throughout Europe performing 'My Time'. It's such a shame that Molly underperformed - I genuinely thought it had a great chance of winning. Her performance was rather average for her though. Her dress rehearsals seemed much better.

I hope this result doesn't make BBC return back to the older generation.

Apparently Georgia's jury votes were declared invalid as all 5 had the exact same top 10.

Howling at Azerbaijan finishing behind Val in the televoting

I really feel sorry for Poland and Switzerland!

Glad the winner was the same on both but I really didn't expect Conchita to top the jury voting!

I can't believe they were in the top 5 in the televoting :o
