May 22, 201411 yr It would make the Big Top 40 a lot more representative then the ridiculously manipulated official chart and for that reason it makes me sad.
May 22, 201411 yr Manipulated is still better than arbitrary. I don't oppose the concept of combining sales and streaming but the problem with it is there isn't any immediately obvious way to effectively equate them, so whatever method is used will be arbitrary and the chart would look completely different if the weightings were changed to any other completely arbitrary amounts. (And besides, there are still several other huge flaws in the Big Top 40).
May 22, 201411 yr Big Top 40 is rather a mess in compilation. Always has been. Between June & November 2013, Airplay was taken out of the chart & then it was re-instated in December at a smaller percentage. It used to be 50/50 sales/airplay. Now it's something like 75%/25%. There are many downsides to the show. Where new entries are missed out & not even mentioned & there are no re-caps in the 40 - 11 part. The only reasonable part of the countdown, is the 4pm start, where they play the top 10 of the week from iTunes. The rest is gobblygook at best. No matter, whether 2.4 million listen or not. Radio 1's countdown lacks inspiration too, but Big Top 40 needs to lose all airplay forever. It is nonsense.
