May 21, 201411 yr Coldplay's 3rd and Michael Jackson's 33rd top 10 hit (excluding Jackson 5 hits but including his four top 10 features as a solo act) if I've counted correctly! Also good to see Iggy moving up. Some nice movement in the Hot 100 top tier :o :D. Edited May 21, 201411 yr by Noahspike
May 21, 201411 yr COME ON, ARIANA It's strange to see MJ in the top 10. Seems like a prime example of a song that sold solely on its instant grat status to me?
May 22, 201411 yr COME ON, IGGY! You better hit #1 before Ariana is there for 9 weeks. I mean both would be #1's for Iggy. But, Fancy >>>>> Problem. Though, 'Fancy' is 11/10. 'Problem' is 10/10. Edited May 22, 201411 yr by ▲Tyler▲
May 22, 201411 yr Glad that One Republic has re-entered with Love Runs Out can't wait for the video, hope it becomes a big hit and WOW at 5 seconds of summer entering quite high, I wonder if Katy Perry will get another US #1 with Birthday it is climbing maybe it will peak top 10 though. Take That & Solo Singles Rate
May 22, 201411 yr I would be VERY happy if 'Birthday' went top 10 at this stage. I really hope it manages it but I'm not at all sure it will.
May 22, 201411 yr Author I would be VERY happy if 'Birthday' went top 10 at this stage. I really hope it manages it but I'm not at all sure it will. I don't think it will either.
May 24, 201411 yr YES at Coldplay x3! Why the huge jumps for all of their songs this week though? 'Fancy' looks on course for #1 fairly soon, I think I'd prefer 'Problem' to get there though out of the two Iggy-related songs. And Calvin so close to getting a second top 10 hit as lead artist, perhaps next week? Never expected 'Summer' to do this well for him in the US, it's holding up fairly well (better than I expected) in the UK as well. Great to see Ed Sheeran picking up another Hot 100 hit as well, his sixth to date. Didn't notice Clean Bandit getting so close to the Hot 100 already, hope they don't end up stalling at #102 :drama: Tove Lo inches away from the Hot 100 as well, next week please
May 24, 201411 yr YES at Coldplay x3! Why the huge jumps for all of their songs this week though? From Billboard: Coldplay's' EDM-infused "A Sky Full of Stars," co-written and -produced by Avicii, vaults 43-10, marking the band's third top 10. "Speed of Sound" reached No. 8 in 2005 and "Viva La Vida" led the June 28, 2008, chart. Shooting "Stars" up the Hot 100? Sales; the song actually drops off Digital Songs (from No. 9), but its slide is owed to iTunes' customers who opted to "complete" their purchase of Coldplay's new album, "Ghost Stories," by upgrading their earlier purchases of "Stars" to a full album; the set will debut on next week's Billboard 200. Effectively, consumers who completed the album were returning the song, thus translating to its sales chart absence. For the purposes of the Hot 100, however, aggregate sales contribute to the song's overall point total. "Stars" charges 6-1 to become Coldplay's first leader on Hot Rock Songs. at the thought of 'A Sky Full of Stars' being a rock song :king:.
May 24, 201411 yr Author YES at Coldplay x3! Why the huge jumps for all of their songs this week though? This is not the first time the 'complete my album' (CMA) effect has happened in the wrong week. From iTunes: "When the pre-order item becomes available, your account will be billed for the pre-order, and the item will appear in the Purchased section of your account. If there is a billing issue that prevents us from billing your account when the item is released, you'll receive an email notifying you that the item is available." This is what I think is happening: If there are no digital sales this week for 'A Sky Full Of Stars' due to CMA, then iTunes somehow fulfilled the album pre-order in the previous tracking week.If the album became available at (for example) 23:58 on Sunday, anyone who pre-ordered the album got it.iTunes obviously withheld the album sales from Soundscan and rolled them into next week, but they weren't able to withhold the digital songs effect. For the purposes of the Hot 100 however, Billboard must be ignoring the CMA effect and re-adding any sales removed.Soundscan sees CMA as a return (as it should), so the digital songs totals are accurate. That's my take on it anyway
May 24, 201411 yr That doesn't really explain why it (and the other 2 songs) has risen so much :P It does explain 'A Sky Full of Stars' (albeit confusingly), doesn't it ? It says its rise is down to aggregate sales? It seems like an undeserved top 10 hit overall though. ^ britster explained it (I think?) better than I ever could anyway. TBH I've given up trying to understand 'complete my album'/instant grat etc.-type shenanigans :D.
May 24, 201411 yr All that is explaining is why they haven't dropped, not why they've all risen loads - unless by 'aggregate sales' it means it was counting album sales as single sales for some reason?
May 24, 201411 yr Author All that is explaining is why they haven't dropped, not why they've all risen loads - unless by 'aggregate sales' it means it was counting album sales as single sales for some reason? It isn't just adding them back, it's adding: total sales for the week (individual sales of the track plus some instant grat sales) - 100kCMA figure for track from iTunes - 105kSo Billboard uses a total of 205k to compile the Hot 100 - [100k + 105k = 205k] but Soundscan registers the sales as negative 5k - [100k - 105k = -5k] While completely wrong, it would explain those extraordinarily high chart positions, especially as 'A Sky Full Of Stars' has no airplay  .
