Unconditionally did seem like a hit to me (and many people) at the time. I don't think it was a bad single choice, it just didn't do as well as most people thought (by quite a way). If it weren't released, I know I'd be gutted and would wish it had been :P

Agreed! I think if Dark Horse was the follow up to Roar and then release Unconditionally = much better.

I just heard this on the radio and started crying tears of sadness. Why is she not releasing 'Walking on Air'? This is going to flop and quite frankly she deserves the flops she's getting now.
Hmm. I'd have been completely on board with this being the sixth single, but I was really hoping for 'Walking On Air' to be next. :(

Unconditionally isn't sub-par for a ballad :o It just wasn't released at the right time!

It was released at the right time as it kept PRISM high on the charts during the winter months

Yeh, Unconditionally could only really be released over Winter which is why they stuck with it even though Dark Horse was still riding high in the US since being released as an instant-grat.

Exactly. People shouldn't judge the success/impact of a single based solely on its own performance IMO. 'Prism' nearly sold a million by the end of the year and was riding high in the charts over that period when 'Unconditionally' was getting good radio play. With album sales high in general during Q4, it makes sense that more consumers would be inclined to purchase the album after hearing the song (particularly it being a ballad) instead of the song itself. Anyway, it's really a testament to Katy that 'Unconditionally' and 'Birthday' can be legitimately considered flops by her standards, as they've done well!

Re: 'Legendary Lovers', I heard the album months ago and that was a standout so I'm happy it's the next single.

Dark Horse still could have held the sales though, if not maximise them surely?

Well I guess we'll never really know if it would have sold the album better or been a better decision in the long-run. I do think 'Unconditionally' being a wintery ballad would have helped, as others have said.

No. This is gonna smash, a pattern is already forming with this era...

Hit - Flop - Hit - Flop - Hit(?)

Then Walking on Air is gonna be the flop sixth single! :P

This. What Tyler doesn't recognise is this era is about the CAREER-DEFINING< TREND-SETTING hits. She needs TARM for the dust to settle between each mega song and the next and so releases a flop, Birthday, Unconditionally, a subpar single, then releases a massive smash when Dark Horse/ Roar ISN'T on the radios and radio is all too keen to move on from the flop! They are gearing up for this to be a SMASH!! Wonder if it'll be a 3rd number one from the same album? From 5 number ones to three is no small feat and is a respectable decline from her peak!

Talk about f***ing up an era. Lol.

I mean, it's been successful. But, it could have done so much better. They started f***ing up as soon as they released "Unconditionally". "Hey guys we have "Dark Horse", it's kinda like, one of the best songs of her career... But let's release this soppy sub-par ballad instead."

Then that track saves the era and they release "Birthday".

Bitch, bye.

You;'re not getting the strategy. She's changing the game, just like Bey-Bey, with her release strategy. She can't release mammoth mega hit after mmaoth mega-hit, there needs to be time for the dust to settle. She learned her lesson from releasing Cali Gurls then second mammoth hit Teenage Dream right after it. She needs a cooling off period between each one.

I think you're more obsessed with Britney than me! But, it's like one of those "I haven't liked an artist for their past four albums, but I still bring them up all the time." It's not healthy, dude. Let it go. Move on. Your artpop could mean anything! Don't let it be about comparing every pop star you now "prefer" to Britney Spears! <3

Yes, my artpop COULD mean anything, couldn't it?

Ok. Wait.

It's bad to have smash after smash? Since when did this become a clever strategy!?

Eitherway I love Unconditionally and it's up there in my favourite Katy songs after disliking it at first

As her smashes are so big they would clash on the radio, so she's saving some time between each one to let Roar and Dark Horse, absolutely MASSIVE hits, to die down a little.
To say I'm disappointed with this choice is an understatement.

Automatically her worst single to date.

You're wrong.

LL is easily my favourite track on the album, but not sure how big it will be as a single. Would prefer it to be an awesome album track.
Yes Yes Yes im so happy this will be a single. All we need now is a fab video to go with it
