August 4, 201410 yr Author #303. Bingo Players feat. Far East Movement - Get Up (Rattle) 2 weeks at #1 in 2013 (#15 of 30 for '13) 6_BGKyAKigs The instrumental of this is pretty cool (and that is the version I prefer). Far East Movement really add nothing to this song at all; same old generic partying lyrics. But regardless of that, I still find their version enjoyable for some odd reason. But my favourite thing about this song is the video. Those ducks! *-*
August 4, 201410 yr Author #302. P!nk - So What 3 weeks at #1 in 2008 (#10 of 20 for '08) FJfFZqTlWrQ I wasn't that big of a fan of this back in 2008. I found it too loud and almost.. childish I guess? (especially the "I'm still a rock star, I got my rock moves" line.) Funhouse is one of my favourite albums ever, but this honestly one of my least favourite tracks on it. I still like it, but I much preferred the single that followed this one. So the story behind this song is that it was written in the aftermath of her separation from her husband (she even goes as far as having him appear in the video.) She's over him. So long. Bye! She's going to do whatever she wants now. This song has a certain aggressive tone to it. She's confident, she's resilient. She doesn't give a f**k. I do love P!nk's attitude in this, but there's certain lyrics that kind of bring it down. I find the Jessica Simpson reference really out of place, too. Edited August 4, 201410 yr by n4yr
August 4, 201410 yr Author #301. fun. feat. Janelle Monáe - We Are Young 1 week at #1 in 2012 (#19 of 36 for '12) Sv6dMFF_yts I was really into this when I first heard it in late 2011; but I got sick of it quickly in the new year. And I find this a bit overrated now. It just never packed the full punch for me that it seemed to for everyone else. Not quite sure why. But this song does work really well as an anthem. The first verse is stripped down, and what that does is when that first chorus hits.. it really hits you. And what a chorus it is. It's a simple message about living life while you're young. It's sung with such.. fortitude, I guess you could say. It's a chorus that anyone and everyone can sing along too. "TONIIIIIIIGHT WE ARE YOOOUNG"! It's an exclamation of a certain fearlessness. The second verse also sounds very anthemic. But I think the best part of the song is actually the bridge. Janelle's part is very lowkey, but it just adds a certain something.

August 5, 201410 yr Author #300. Robbie Williams - Millennium 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#18 of 30 for '98) hW5-DGWq9is So Robbie's first #1. It's about the perils of current society. The materialism, and relying on the "stars" (celebrities?) to dictate how we should live our lives. And the way society is headed into the new millennium. Maybe a year early to be talking about it, but that's not a big deal. The production samples a James Bond song, that's been sample many other times. But it fits the song well.
August 5, 201410 yr Author #299. Cheryl Cole - Promise This 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#15 of 34 for '10) ICEqXCBWWNA Sometimes I love this, and sometimes I find this rather uneventful. I find the "alouette" parts kind of stupid and sound kind of awkward. But they work in the context of the song. It's a reference to the classic French nursery rhyme about plucking a bird. And this song mentions several times about plucking wings. I think what "promise" Cheryl wants is that he'll promise to be faithful, or something. Edited August 5, 201410 yr by n4yr
August 5, 201410 yr Author #298. Olly Murs feat. Flo Rida - Troublemaker 2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#18 of 36 for '12) 4aQDOUbErNg It's just a really catchy song. It does sound like a Maroon 5 song, though.
August 5, 201410 yr #298. Olly Murs feat. Flo Rida - Troublemaker 2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#18 of 36 for '12) It's just a really catchy song. It does sound like a Maroon 5 song, though.I always hear it as a mix of 'Misery' by Maroon 5 (the guitar) and 'You Drive Me Crazy' by Britney Spears (some of the melody)!
August 5, 201410 yr Author #297. Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer - Give Me Everything 3 weeks at #1 in 2011 (#16 of 30 for '11) EPo5wWmKEaI This is a song that is littered with hooks. Like literally every part of this song could pass as the chorus. More thanks to Ne-Yo than anything, though. Pitbull is only there to give us his insightful lyrics of taking a picture of him with a Kodak. So the main parts that can pass as a chorus are "Excuse me I might drink a little more.."; "Tonight I want all of you tonight.."; and "Grab somebody sexy.." This was like the "Dynamite" of 2011, and just as overplayed.
August 5, 201410 yr Author #296. Boyzone - No Matter What 3 weeks at #1 in 1998 (#18 of 30 for '98) 7eul_Vt6SZY This is Boyzone's biggest hit. I was pretty surprised to see them have a million seller, actually. It's one of those song where I'm never quite sure whether I like this or not. I guess I was feeling favourable when I made this list. It's a bit boring and the lyrics a bit self-righteous and I expect a bit more from a song involving Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman.
August 5, 201410 yr Author #295. Jessie J - Domino 2 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#17 of 36 for '12) UJtB55MaoD0 With a debut album full of songs trying to make one statement or another, "Domino" was a nice change of pace for Jessie J at the time. Not saying those songs are bad because of that, I did enjoy her debut album (even if it was all over the place), but I like the laid-back carefree breezy nature of this song. Not the most original production ever (it is Dr Luke after all), but that's not a big deal.
August 5, 201410 yr Author #294. Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You? 2 weeks at #1 in 1992 (#5 of 8 for '92) G_UXvcr22rM I never expected to like this very much (just seemed like a forgettable early 90's one hit wonder); but this chorus is so infectious.
August 6, 201410 yr Author #293. Boyzone - A Different Beat 1 week at #1 in 1996 (#15 of 24 for '96) CfdpNo8e_pc This is a song about humanity creating a better world and such; with some chanting bits thrown it. This song really stands out amongst all their cover songs, and in their discography in general. That's probably why I like this way more than most of their other songs. The only downfall is that it feels a bit disingenuous.
August 6, 201410 yr Author #292. Rihanna - Diamonds 1 week at #1 in 2012 (#16 of 36 for '12) lWA2pjMjpBs Her odd enunciation ("shine bright like a diamond") makes this song oddly catchy. This song took so long to really grow on me. I found it boring at first, that enunciation just sounded stupid, and the "ohhhhhh"'s sounded really out of place. But I liked that she wasn't leading her album with a club banger like her last 2 albums. Rihanna is a chameleon after all. I'm not sure why I like this song now, though; it makes little sense (the video makes even less sense.) Maybe my mid-tempo obsession coming into play here. Maybe I just find the chorus really uplifting. I don't know.
August 6, 201410 yr Author #291. Michael Jackson - Blood On The Dance Floor 1 week at #1 in 1997 (#13 of 24 for '97) c3_NntYhzV4 MJ's list of UK #1's is such a... weird list. He has a lot of #1's, but most of them seem utterly random, with a lot of his iconic songs missing out. This being one of those random ones. That aside, what I do like about this song is that it was like a return to 80's MJ. It reminds me a bit of "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal." Though, you could say that makes it sound dated. It's a very dark song filled with paranoia.
August 6, 201410 yr I went the other way with Diamonds. Liked it at first, now find it dull as dishwater.
August 6, 201410 yr Author #290. Boyzone - Words 1 week at #1 in 1996 (#14 of 24 for '96) w_Rut4qm33g And just like that, the last 3 Boyzone #1's are out of the way. I guess I feel the same way about them. I like this one way more than I probably should. I even like it more than the Bee Gees version (oops). It just sounds kind of epic for some reason; just the way it builds up. And best of all, it manages to be a tolerable Boyzone song, which isn't an easy thing to do. I just really like the chorus: "It's only words; And words are all I have; To take your heart away".

August 6, 201410 yr Author #288. Rita Ora - I Will Never Let You Down 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#10 of 16 for '14) 50GQjUZ4P3M My least favourite of her four #1's so far, but it is still fairly new to me. Calvin's production is not as loud as it usually is, but it works for this song. I like it when Rita screams "OH" before the final chorus for some reason. It's a standard catchy pop song. I'm guessing this song was about her wanting to please her boyfriend, Calvin.. well not anymore! I've always thought this song had a sexual context; like she "will never let him down" sexually. Makes "let me take you where you never go" take on a whole different meaning. Erm.. yeah.
