June 17th is shaping up to be the start of a really exciting chart battle in the US, with 4 very different artists releasing new albums:

  • deadmau5 - while(1<2)
"while(1<2)" is the 7th studio album by Canadian electronic artist deadmau5. His last album, "> album title goes here <" debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 in October 2012, with sales of 57,604 in the first week.
  • Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
"Ultraviolence" is the 2nd (major label) studio album from American alternative darling Lana Del Rey. Her debut album "Born to Die" sold 76,634 in its first week to land at #2 in February 2012.
  • LINKIN PARK - The Hunting Party
"The Hunting Party" is the 6th studio album from American rock band Linkin Park. Their last album "Living Things" started at #1 on sales of 223,420 in July 2012.
  • Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour
"In The Lonely Hour" is the debut album from British warbler Sam Smith. His star has been on the rise since his critically lauded performance on Saturday Night Live.

So, which of these artists will debut at #1?

The previous two Linkin Park albums (released two and four years ago) opened in a very similar region and according to Wikipedia they both beat the #2 by around 1,000 copies. I'd guess they can open in the 200k region again which will be enough for #1, perhaps beating Sam by 1k :P. (On a serious note I do believe that Sam will comfortably beat Lana, he seems perfectly positioned with an album-selling single progressing really well on radio (and iTunes) in the run-up to the album release and the pre-orders are great too)

I didn't realise Linkin Park had sold so much in their first weeks previously :o

I think it'll be:

01. Linkin Park (150,000)

02. Sam Smith (110,000)

03. Lana Del Rey (80,000)

05. Deadmau5 (45,000)

I think Deadmau5 will also outsell Lana.

#1 Linkin Park

#2 Sam Smith

#3 Deadmau5

#4 Lana Del Rey

The numbers say it should be Linkin Park, but they've had no hit song. Lana and Sam have both hit #1 on iTunes with promotional tracks, but 'West Coast' has made the biggest impact on the Hot 100 out of all their collective singles this era.

If they'd released on separate weeks, they all had the potential to get to #1

You forgot J.Lo. :P

Tiesto's out that week too, but he's only made an impact on the iTunes album chart this week.

I think Lana will take the spot since she's been top 10 on itunes pre orders for a while now (Sam Smith following behind at #12)
Think people are missing out how Lana's new record just debuted on itunes 17 days ago but Linkin Park's record debuted on itunes 40 days ago.

01 Linkin Park - The Hunting Party ~ 180k

02 Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence ~ 135k

03 Sam Smith - In the Lonely Hour ~ 120k

06 Deadmau5 - While(1<2) ~ 55k

07 Jennifer Lopez - A.K.A. ~ 40k

Do people really believe Linkin Park will sell below 180k?

This album is basically the album what the "OLD LP" fans were asking for.(or so they say)

If anything, it should sell higher than the previous album which debuted at 220k.

From HDD:

"At this point, industry forecasters are predicting a debut for Interscope’s Lana Del Rey in the 175-200k range, with Capitol’s Sam Smith in the 125-150k range and Warner Bros.’ Linkin Park around 100k."

Ouch @ Linkin Park.

Would predict 35-40k for deadmau5, considering deadmau5 has about the same sales power as he did when he released < album title goes here > and it's digital-only first week (physical release follows the week after).

Yes Lana *.*

She's taken over on iTunes pre-orders:

4. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence (Deluxe)

8. Sam Smith - In the Lonely Hour (Deluxe Version)

10. LINKIN PARK - The Hunting Party

37. deadmau5 - while(1<2)

108. Sam Smith - In the Lonely Hour

409. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

436. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence (Deluxe Version)

644. LINKIN PARK - The Hunting Party

Not really sure what to expect digitally. Lana's two versions in the 400s are probably unlikely to be outselling Sam's version at #108 and her top version hasn't been outselling Sam's one constantly. You'd expect her to be more frontloaded too, but who knows. Obviously Linking Park and deadmau5 aren't contenders.

It'll be a really huge week digitally anyway, I'm sure!
