The Shakira fan goes mental :o

He's not a Shakira fan - he's a fan of Shakin' Stevens.

I don't think i have ever heard an Enya song in my life :o Is their a thread anywhere?

I can´t believe your musical knowledge is so restricted. She is the biggest new age/pop artist ever, she has released many classic songs, but she´s more an albums artist, and the type that is not often played on pop radio. That Fugees song Ready Or Not and also Mario Winan´s I don´t Wanna Know are both based on an Enya sample (Boadicea).

And who exactly are you having a go at anyway? The owner of that site site, or me for posting them?

Not at a particular person, but at the numbers themselves.

No, i have heard songs, but i just can't think of any. Her music is not my type of thing. It is to light for my liking. I recall her being interviewed on the Late late show in Ireland and she seemed very odd. A very private person as i recall ^_^

She did Orinoco Flow. That was a Number 1 in the UK. Don't know any of her other songs. :unsure:

Anyway, I've been reading this thread ( all 300 pages of it). I also read the 300 pages on exactly the same topic when we had the exact same discussion on CC several months ago (pre-BJ).

Charis, Westlife have not sold anywhere near the number of albums you are quoting. The figures stated on their website are vastly inflated by their record company/management to make them appear more successful than they really are. For instance, Coast to Coast has not sold 12 million copies. Hugely successful US acts selling millions of albums in the US and around the world don't sell anything near 12 million copies.

Westlife have sold a very high number of albums in the UK and have also been reasonably successful in some parts of Europe. They have also sold well in the Far East but the number of records you need to sell in countries such as Malaysia and Thailand to get Platinum status is negligible.

The best way of getting an accurate ( and independent) figure for albums sold in Europe is to go to the IFPI website and look at the Platinum awards for both Robbie and Westlife over the years. ( Europe will make up the bulk of sales for both acts).

I'll do this tomorrow if I remember. ^_^

Here are the Robbie v Westlife European Album Sales Figures from the Official IFPI website

Source here- http://www.ifpi.org/site-content/platinum/...inum_intro.html

The figures cover all album sales in Europe ( including the UK). One million sales merits a Platinum Award. 2 million sales merits 2 x Platinum etc etc.

So if an album is currently 5x platinum it has sold at least 5 million copies in Europe ( It could actually be closer to 6 million).

Here Goes

Westlife Album Sales In Europe

Face to Face = 1 x Platinum

Turnaround = 1 x Platinum

World of Our Own = 2 x Platinum

Coast to Coast = 2 x Platinum

Westlife = 2 x Platinum ----------------------- 8 million albums

That means Westlife have sold a minimum of 8 million albums in Europe ( but not more than 13 million if we suppose all sales are approaching the higher Platinum Award level)

Robbie Album Sales In Europe

Life Thru A Lens = 3 x Platinum

I've Been Expecting You = 4 x Platinum

Sing When You're Winning = 4 x Platinum

Swing When You're Winning = 4 x Platinum

Escapology = 5 x Platinum

Live At Knebworth = 2 x Platinum

Greatest Hits = 5 x Platinum

Intensive Care = 5 x Platinum ---------------------- 32 million albums

That means Robbie has sold a minimum of 32 million albums in Europe ( but not more than 40 million if we suppose all sales are approaching the higher Platinum Award level).

Well that settles that debate then. Not bad sales for Westlife really though

Intensive Care = 5 x Platinum

I'ver seen it said so many times that Intensive Care had underperformed, yet it has sold as many as any other Robbie album, so that puts that myth to rest too :thumbup:

It has underperformed in the UK compared to his previous albums, but still was the 3rd or 4th best selling album of 2005, so not much to mourn about... In Germany it is one of his best selling, if not the best selling album of his career. But I somehow doubt his new album will achieve that much.

You have forgotten to add the Unbreakable album, or maybe ifpi forgotten to add it. It sold at least 1.1 millions in the UK. Also didn't add Allow us to be frank which sold 700.000 in the UK so it must have touched the million in europe. So we come to a total of minumum 10 millions

Westlife sold more than 8 millions in the UK alone. By the way congratulations to Robbie Williams, he sold well. Westlife music is not pop that europe likes more. But i never said westlife were bigger than robbie in the albums sales.

Is each platinum status one million sales?

If so, Enya - A Day Without Rain went 13 x platinum. ^_^

According to the Official IFPI figures a Day Without Rain is 3 x Platinum in Europe, not 13 x Platinum. :unsure:

isn't any website like this for world wide sales?
If there is I haven't found it yet Charis. :cry: You'd think there would be but apparently a lot of countries don't have reliable Charts and no-one really knows who has sold what in them. <_<
