Cyprus
John Karayiannis - One Thing I Should Have Done

My favourite Eurovision country have now officially confirmed their return to Eurovision for 2015 and will be using a brand new national selection process!

After taking a year out in 2014, Cyprus has announced it will back at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, and what a comeback it will be! The Cypriot broadcaster, CyBC has namely revealed that it will host a big national selection to choose its song for Austria.

After being absent from the competition for a year, the Cypriot broadcaster CyBC is planning a spectacular national selection to choose its entry for Austria next year.

The format for the selection will include televised auditions, live Semi-Finals, a "Second Chance" live show and of course a Grand Final, where the winner will be chosen.

CyBC have stipulated that the performers should be Cypriots or of Cypriot origin whereas the composers and lyricists can be citizens of other countries so long as a Cypriot is involved creatively.

Simultaneously, CyBC have also started the search for entries to take part in the national selection, with a deadline set for the 5th of September.

Interestingly MFest like in description. Could be pretty good

It didn't work for Belgium this year.

I'd love to get to a stage where every country is adopting the Melodifestivalen method each year, but that'll require quite the widening of the talent pool.

Cyprus 2015 therefore could be interesting, but my breath is not being held.

Cyprus is a factory of singers for Greece. We have more successful Cypriot singers than Greek singers. They also win in Greek Music Talent Shows such as X-Factor and Greek Pop Idol. Many Cypriot singers represented the Greek entry in Eurovision Song Contest such as Anna Vissi, Eleythria Eleytheriou, Sarbel, Loukas Yorkas.

Looks like this could be bigger than Melodifestivalen in terms of the number of semi finals! Apparently according to ESC Today, the provisional plan is for a total of 10 live shows starting in mid-October. This will include 8 semi-finals, a second chance round, and the final scheduled for the end of January! :o
EIGHT semi-finals? :D I suppose by the law of averages there'll be something worth listening to in there but GOOD LORD that's going to need an industrial-strength sifter

CyBC have confirmed that the 10 Eurovision selection shows will begin in December and will consist of 7 audition shows, 2 "Eurochallenge" shows and then the Grand Final scheduled to happen on January 31st.

It has also been announced that Christer Bjorkman will be joining the panel during this selection process.

The Cypriot selection shows are beginning next Sunday, I have extremely high hopes so I hope I won't be too disappointed in a couple of months time when the entry is finally selected!

It looks like quite an interesting process so I'll probably tune in to see what its like - it seems a bit like a mini X Factor.

So we had the first audition show tonight and while I haven't listened to all of the songs presented so far, the girl with the hype on the forums from tonight is Emily Charalambous who reached the final of The Voice of Greece earlier this year!

Her song 'Right In' is a dance-pop song WITH A BREAKDOWN and automatically screams potentially amazing with a full production around it. Emily is also gorgeous and this is what I need from Cyprus - hopefully this reaches the final at the very least! We heard one minute of the song tonight (the first verse leading into the chorus and the breakdown) and you can watch it from 2:20 in the video below:

They've just had the first Eurochallenge round where they've cut the final 20 down to 10 (no idea why they've scheduled it to finish at 1.30am Cypriot time!), lots of complaints on the web regarding the jury, which now includes Christer Bjorkman. Apparently the amazing 'Right In' has been eliminated. :(

All of the performances now seem to be on YouTube.

Here's Emily! Love the song and would be amazing with a proper studio production, Despina certainly knows a dance tune when she sees it but I see the jealousy in Christer's eyes. No idea why this didn't get through to the final 10, it screams perfect pop song especially considering they had time to revamp it if they wanted to - I blame Christer.

This rock band definitely are the ones with the hype in this selection and are through to the final 10. I'm not a fan of this type of music, but I think I can see the appeal.

The only other song with some hype that is through to the final 10 seems to be this lovely duet in both French and Greek, could work pretty well on the Eurovision stage with a bit of sorting out.

The 6 songs competing in next Sunday's final (in order they will be performed) are:

1. Hovig- Stone In A River

2. Doody- Magic

3. Panagiotis Koufogiannis - Without Your Love

4. Minus One - Shine

5. Giannis Karagiannis - One Thing That I Should Have Done

6. Charis Savva & Nearchos Evaggelou - Dila Den Agapo

The Grench ballad was the only one of those I wanted to hear all the way through but even then it's not all that engaging. All in all a very poor selection.

Yeah the Greek/French ballad is pretty nice, especially in studio version. I think Minus One are going to win though.

Studio version of 'Right In'! So good, what a missed opportunity!

I've only heard three of these so far, and not necessarily their studio versions but Charis & Nearchou sounded nice in studio and so did Panagiotis. I wasn't too keen on Minus One live, but the studio version sounds decent from the small part I've heard.

I think Minus One will win tonight but we'll see! It's nice not to have a strong personal favourite so I don't get let down Timebelle style again.
