EMI boss presses for singles rule shake-up

Source: Music Week

EMI chairman and CEO Tony Wadsworth used the platform of his company’s autumn conference to press for all qualification restrictions to be lifted for digital releases in the combined singles chart.

Wadsworth hit out at present rules, which bar digital sales counting towards the chart until a week before an equivalent physical release becomes available, by calling at yesterday’s event for a chart to reflect everything the public is buying.

“If it doesn’t it will cease to be relevant to the public and the media and we’ll lose out. It needs to reflect all sales – physical and digital, including download videos,†he told the event at London’s Mermaid Theatre. “Let’s make our chart relevant and that’s a plea to everyone who has a voice in the charts.â€

The BPI has already backed such a move, although there are continuing reservations from some high street retailers, wary of what impact it could have on the already rapidly-declining physical singles business.

The conference included a preview of All Saints’ debut Parlophone single Rock Steady, supported by an appearance by the four members of the group, and the first screening of the video of Robbie Williams’ next single Lovelight. There was also a sneak listen of some of the music from the new Beatles album Love – the soundtrack of their Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show – while live performers included Lily Allen, Badly Drawn Boy, Richard Hawley, Jamelia, Seth Lakeman and Keith Urban.

Seth Lakeman :D

I hope they do it tbh.

1 - Will Increase sales even more - Justin, Christina, Scissor Sisters must have lost out on a good 70,000 downloads each because they weren't counted until a week prior to the physical release.

2 - It will keep the charts interesting - I love how songs are just climbing or increasing in sales such as Snow Patrol or Infernal - it's so random and makes the charts even more exciting.

3 - There will always be a market for the physical single - if ever I am a huge fan of an artist I will always go out and buy the physical single just to add it to the 'collection' and people always maintain this whole notion of being able to hold what they've spent their money on if you get me.

The only thing THEY SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER incoporate is airplay because that is just bias as the crappy local radio stations churn out the same stuff day in day out

In that case I could see a lot more people doing what Kasabian did :D however I disagree with video downloads as that's no necessarily downloading a song is it

SO hope this rule comes into play.

Did I read correctly...a new BEATLES album?

Echo.. the above...Beatles? Someone have more info? EMI.com?

I've thought about this and think i have found a way to increase sales ala Kasabian...

1. Release singles and videos to recieve airplay no more than two weeks prior to release

2. Keep the rule that allows songs to chart on downloads one week before physicals are released

3. NEVER ALLOW AIRPLAY COS ITS LOCAL RADIO THAT KILLS THE GOOD SONGS AND ABANDONS THE DECENT FRESH NEW STUFF!!

well thats my input anyway :P :D

The UK chart is slowly transforming into the Hot 100.

That would be pretty sweet if we had a Top 100 instead

Most other places either have top 40/50/100

Actually this ties in with their anniversary next Jan 2007, Post Offices are releasing a 6 stamp issue on The Beatles, so for any stamp enthusiast as myself, this will be a rare stamp history, usually they don't depict any life celebrities apart from the Royal Family

This a 40-year thing?

They should issue them on some coins too

As far as I know they are featured as stamps, it be nice if there was some coins. I hope they will be including all 4 members of the band as 2 of them sadly are no longer with us.

Well too right

Obv. would be some press from back in the day with those ledgendary haircuts B)

Are we going to have a weekly Beatles release for 17 weeks then? They could wrestle the most #1s record from Pelvis!

 PLEASE don't let the whole re-issue thing happen again! THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN MODERN CHARTS! and ruin them! they don't need the money, it's just greed!

AND also a cheap and tasteless way of CLAIMING to have scored another No.1 single!

I personally could not be doing with another pointless reissue campaign even if my favourite act ever decided to do it, it's just a waste of time and how many Elvis records must be re-released ffs? He's dead - let him stay dead - im sure another will be re-released soon to celebrate the day he had his first cup of coffee or something.

Agreed. It makes a mockery of the charts and didn't gain Elvis any respect. If anything, it undid the boost to his image gained by the JXL track a couple of years earlier.

It could be good to have an extra couple of weeks where downloads count towards the charts, but not too many. This way it might encourage shorter promotional campaigns too, which will help to keep things fresh as well as making it more plausible for a track to climb the charts gradually and build up a bit of momentum. I'm not too sure about the video thing. It will give the big name acts on big labels who can produce gimmicky videos too much of a boost over smaller acts focusing on good music. Perhaps a separate video download chart would be an option so that creative videos would still gain some acknowledgement? It would be intresting to see it broken down anyway, especially as so many music channels don't play the most requesed videos as often as their personal favourites.

I hope these rules come into effect, every download should be counted no matter when the song was released, when it charted, whether it was deleted and any other stupid little thing they decided to introduce -_-
i think no matter what the song is,or when it was released shouldnt matter, the charts shouild reflect what people are buying or downloading week to week,so if a songfrom the 70's for example sells enoug hdownloads to chart it should do regardless if a phyisiacl xcd is available or not
Weren't the Elvis re-issues just some way of renewing the copyright on the singles for another 50 years? Not designed as a celebration, merely as a means of protecting their asse(t)s?
