"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey... stuff."

Results beginning very very soon, but in the meantime let's take a look at the trailer for the brand new series (if you haven't already - but why not look again if you've already seen it because really you should have watched it over 50 times already)...

I've just started re-watching the whole series from the start. I'm only on episode 3 though! I love how everything makes sense the second time round. Plus I forgot how good Series One was!

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

http://slouchingtowardsthatcham.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/doctor-who-season-7-episode-2-dinosaurs-on-a-spaceship.jpg

Finishing dead last is the second episode of the seventh series since the show's revival. It's understandable why so many people dislike this as much as they do, but I actually think that on second, third and fourth watch it's an *alright* story. Chris Chibnall's certainly written much better stories for the show ('The Hungry Earth', 'Cold Blood', 'The Power of Three', etc.), however I'd say people are maybe a bit too critical of this?

Apparently the whole idea for the story only came about after the SFX team suggested that it would be "fun" to see dinosaurs incorporated in an episode of Doctor Who - which is probably why Chibnall didn't focus too much on the script and it was left to the director to envision how beautiful dinosaurs could look translated on screen. Solomon's a good villain in the episode, but I certainly don't think it was David Bradley's greatest performance ever, the characterisation was a bit poor and the story was a bit all over the place. He was certainly much better as the First Doctor in 'An Adventure in Space and Time' where his talents were not wasted in the slightest.

I think this episode overall relies a lot on visual excitement (particularly when it comes down to Queen Nefertiti, portrayed by Riann Steele, who is just stunning (and in all that gear too!) :kink:). And Rory's dad was a terrible addition to the cast, in 'The Power of Three' also. Nice to see his family, but I'd have preferred Amy's parents to return any day of the week.

The worst thing about that is how dull the title is, I place a lot of importance on titles and when a title is just literally what you're going to get I feel quite disappointed. Would have it been too much to ask for something with a bit more literary flair, like 'Jurassic Ark' (even if that'd have attracted the attention of a few lawyers, that's just off the top of my head and I'm sure there were better suggestions out there)?

Plot-wise it suffers the sin of being overly kid-friendly even for Who while at the same time going all the other way at the end and having the Doctor effectively murder the villain. I did enjoy the Egyptian queen and the hunter person though as a few extra characters to focus on, even if they were pretty basic stereotypes. Not surprising last-placer.

Dinosaurs... is really bad, everything about it seemed clearly targeted at a younger audience - dinosaurs, a spaceship, a generic old villain, familiar 'fantasy' worlds, it was just so so uninspiring for one of the top Sci-Fi shows ever.

Not to mention it's extremely out of character for the Doctor - he kills when he needs to, but I've never seen him mercilessly let the villain die like that. It's just not right, he wasn't even particularly abhorrent a villain.

I always forget what Love and Monsters is, it must have been terrible.

Yup, it did seem sinister that he just kills in a blaize way!

Love & Monsters

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/The-Abzorbaloff.jpg

Definitely not RTD's finest moment, and quite possibly his worst episode... 'Love & Monsters' somehow and miraculously manages to finish above 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' which is made to look like a brilliant episode when sat next to this. Once again, I don't think this episode is actually *that* bad, it's just down to a) Peter Kay being in the episode, b) Peter Kay being in the episode and c) Peter Kay being in the episode. The Abzorbaloff is quite probably one of the worst ideas the Doctor Who team have ever had for a villain. The concept of its survival was intriguing, but even then, what happened to Ursula following her "consumption" was a bit far-fetched.

Elton Pope was such an awful character as well. The whole love affair going on with Jackie and Rose-this Rose-that grated after the first 15 minutes of the episode. So yes, I think I can speak for us all when I say I'm glad this episode aired so long ago and we don't ever have to see it unless Watch decide to grace our screens with it. This was a horrid attempt at a love story with an element of Doctor Who in it and RTD should be eternally ashamed.

Wasn't the monster created by a Blue Peter viewer as part of a competition? That's probably why it was awful.
I honestly thought Love & Monsters would be last! I don't like either episodes but I like the Jackie Tyler scenes in Love & Monsters, so I'm glad Dinosaurs is bellow it.

I didn't find Love & Monsters too bad at the time, being my 8/9 year old self, but even then it was a big disappointment compared to other Who episodes.

looking at that YouTube clip now, the abzorbaloff is laughably awful. Should be right at the bottom of the list tbh but Dinosaurs on a Spaceship wasn't that good either.

I like Love & Monsters :( But I don't even remember watching the Dinosaurs one AT ALL and it was season 7! oops
Oh thank GOD Love and Monsters isn't any higher. Watched it for the first time in years last month and it made me ASHAMED to be a Who fan :(

I barely even consider it an episode of Who.

What tolerable 'characters' there were got killed off early, Elton didn't work as a protagonist in the slightest, he ruined Mr Blue Sky, the happy ending isn't really happy at all once you think about it, and that's before you even get to Peter Kay's involvement. Probably my least-favourite of the show.

The Rings of Akhaten

http://i2.cdnds.net/13/14/618x412/cult-doctor-who-s07-e02-the-rings-of-akhaten-5.jpg

This episode finishing as low as this really does anger me. It may have had its flaws, and it certainly wasn't a *perfect* episode (there were a few plot holes, and the Vigil turned out to be completely pointless in the end), but it was such a beautiful episode. I didn't appreciate it as much as I do now the first time around, but it's one of the finest that series 7 had to offer. I think the general fan conception of music being in Doctor Who is pretty insulting - much of Doctor Who's elegance and beauty is shaped by the soundtracks that accompany some of our favourite ever moments in the show's history. I definitely don't see this as any exception.

Clara was offered her first taste of an alien planet in this episode, and it was great to see her going off and doing her own thing without the Doctor for a while. And it was also great to get that pre-titles sequence that delved into exactly how contemporary Clara came to be (which made parts of the episode so much more amazing - kind of LOVE Ellie). When Merry sang 'The Long Song' and 'God of Akhaten' to Grandfather and the Doctor delivered his grand speech and all spectators at the Festival of Offerings sang along, I honestly got goosebumps. Such an under-appreciated episode. Just a really beautiful 45 minutes. It was the first episode that immediately reminded me of the RTD era when we saw the design on the planet, and all of the aliens. It felt like we were back at the Maldovarium. The clip below is just stunning. Shame on y'all.
