I think several people seem to believe that the downfall of The Wanted and JLS was, in part, down to One Direction's rise in popularity, with many fans 'growing out' of those two bands, and I'd agree. Right now, 5 Seconds of Summer are smashing worldwide with The Vamps proving a chart force in the UK also. Neither of them are exactly overshadowing One Direction right now, especially with them being the biggest group in the world right now, but one day, do we think that 1D will get overshadowed like JLS and The Wanted did?

 

I'm not entirely sure if I can see them being overshadowed myself, I think they'll always remain big in the eyes of the public until the day they do split, especially with the media's current obsession on them. :lol: I can see the media following them individually after that too, Harry especially.

It's always a difficult one isn't it. I think the key for One Direction really is releasing material frequently, but the bands that are big on social media, I think they could have a bad single and still recover, mainly because of the size of their fanbases. The powerhouses of social media (1D, Taylor Swift, Bieber, GaGa) I think will always be successful and in the public eye as long as they keep releasing material.

 

It's hard to judge in the age of social media, as acts like 1D have a far bigger reach than 10/15 years ago. I guess the best comparisons you could make to them would be N*Sync and Take That. Now I wasn't old enough to witness what their popularity was like, and I know neither were as big globally as 1D were, but especially in their home countries they were huge.

 

People are always going to grow out of 1D. Like I bet that a lot of their fans when they were on X Factor will have moved on, but because they've mass appeal they can appeal to a new audience. At the end of the day in 10 years time there will be a new big boyband, but I can't see another band overtaking them for a good few years yet, just because I think they're such a dominant force in the market.

 

I think both The Wanted and 1D could have sustained in the same market. But 1D just got the better material. The last era for The Wanted was so messed up, and you need good material to be successful in the long term. So many bad choices were made, so many delays, and in the end the bad decisions just killed their popularity. Bands like that need tobe releasing an album every year.

I honestly feel as though over tha past few months 5 Seconds Of Summer have sky-rocketed to fame they are dominating the boy band scene currently more so than any other boy and currently. Until One Direction make a proper comeback and both bands are in the public simultaneously, we won't be able to judge whether or not 5SOS are starting to overshadow them.

 

Anyway, if 5SOS do start to overshadow 1D, they've only got themselves to blame for practically bringing them all of this attention. :lol: At this moment in time I can honestly say I prefer 5 Seconds Of Summer purely because they're music appeals to me on a larger scale and their personalities attract me to the band, also.

 

It really is starting to feel as though the spotlight's on the Australian lads lately, as much as I don't wasn't 1D to fade into obscurity (which I'm sure they won't), I can see 5SOS at least overtaking them in popularity at some point in the future tbh.

I think it's just because 1D haven't really released much this year - two post-album singles that weren't really given a push aside from the usual video + radio airplay (where's the PROMO, MM XF performance from 3 months before its release aside...)

Absolutely no way 5SOS will ever over-take 1D in popularity stakes. They haven't really done any promotion since the end of last year in the UK at least, and 5SOS have just released an album. Like 1D, 5SOS will need to release a new album every year, but you can see they're being marketed entirely as 1D. Similar release strategies, trying to forge an identity like with everyone knowing their names. What's different is I'm sure half of the first world population could name a member of One Direction, but you could not say the same for 5SOS.

The funny thing is though, a lot of people only went to the Where We Are tour because 5SOS were supporting.

I think it's only a small handful that would've done that - especially as tickets went on sale over a year ago when 5SOS were more niche, before their breakthrough.

Buying tickets to the One Direction tour is still keeping them relevant and putting money in Cowell's pocket. Regardless of whether or not they only came for the support act.

 

To answer the original question I think it's not a question of will but when. Of course they will find themselves one day in a place where another band is to be currently more popular than them. But I don't think that's going to happen for a good few years. And even when it does inevitably happen, I highly doubt said band will be able to live up to the heights and legacy of One Direction's career.

That must have been a very small minority. I saw two girls that were mad for them, but the rest of the people I saw when I was there were there for one band only.

Maybe it's just Scotland then, but it must be pretty embarrassing for 1D when 5SOS get more of a reaction from the crowd.

I really doubt the support act got more of a reaction than the main act at a concert :P

Must of been a Scotland thing, because there was nothing of the sort when I saw them! Granted these big stadium gigs often attracts casual fans who know 1/2 songs, rather than being avid fans, and there were certainly lots of them there. When 5SOS came on, most people were just dis-interested (myself included). Half of the crowd hadn't even turned yet.
