In accordance with AlexRange's dying wishes I have followed up my Tony's 1990s thread with this - my surveyance of the noughties.

A very uneven decade - sometimes it was a baron desert with nothing to listen to apart from "4th-single-off-the-album" desperation. Other times, multiple decade-highlight singles were released in the same month.

I'll start with 2000 this week.

We left 1999 with the following Top 3

1 My Beautiful Friend - The Charlatans

2 Adagio for Strings - William Orbit

3 Re-rewind - Artful Dodger

Predictions welcome.

Oh I'm looking forward to this. I will be intrigued to see where this one heads off as, for me, I would never have been able to use the singles chart to compile it.

I had to a lot of digging to do to find release dates for stuff as a huge chunk of tracks never charted in the UK.

But it will be fairly mainstream.

Let's do this.

William Orbit - Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Mix)

2 weeks

So, you take the one of the most poignant chord progressions in the history of music and put your freshly minted and utterly of-the-time stamp on it - and the result is an impossibly graceful trance anthem. It teases for nearly the whole first half and the payload of beats doesn't hit until nearly 4 minutes in.

The Tiesto version is vulgar, annoying and plain awful by comparison.

A magnificent opening to the new decade.

What a great start, was hoping to see it begin your thread and you have not disappointed.

It spent ages at number one for me and was the classical update to Energy 52's Café Del Mar for me, I'm clearly a sucker for that type of song structure.

It's one of those songs that you always remember where you were the first time you heard it, in my case on the radio late at night around late 2004/early 2005 (just before Tiesto's arrived) listening to the introduction and wondering what the hell this beautiful if familiar piece of music is - and what it's doing in the middle of loads of dance tracks - and then the beats came in and I lost myself for a couple of minutes.

I did like Tiesto's too when it arrived but it's nowhere near Ferry's, and it somewhat annoys me today when Tiesto gets all the credit when it was done so much better six years earlier.

Manic Street Preachers - Masses Against the Classes

4 weeks

For those who had equaled the Manics with string laden anthems and AOR, this was quite a change of direction. Masses Against the Class was a reaction to the criticism leveled at them that they had lost their fire.

Blunt, taut and brimming with cathartic rage, one almost felt cleansed by its anger. James' distorted vocals in the chorus are a gale-force, ice cold blast which blew away any notion that they had lost the ability to rock. Sean's machine-gun drums still have impact now and announce the titular line with irresistible force.

It had an easy target its sites - a failing Westlife single and January market wer no obstacle on its way to number 1. Being released on just one CD single merits mention when their previous Top 5 singles all had the benefit of being released on two CDs.

Some said they were trying too hard to re-create past glories - you just can't win with some people.

Missey's Hot Boyz was outshone but is no slouch and better than many number 1s that follow.

Andreas Johnson - Glorious

3 weeks

Speaking of string-laden anthems - the aptly titled Glorious was instantly reminiscent of late 90s Manics Street Preachers - at least musically, if not vocally. Andreas' voice was far more informed by Tim Burgess or Richard Ashcroft, though.

A great driving tune and a one hit wonder - Andreas would not trouble the Top 40 a second time.

Kelis - Caught Out There

3 weeks

Demented and in the most listenable of ways. For a chorus so petulant I never tire of hearing it. The beats are sparse and sexy, leaving Kelis do all the work. A golden period for modern r'n'b.

We also see Muse's first entry of the decade - there will be many more.

An excellent start here Tony, I've adored the Andreas and William songs since they were out. 'The Masses Against The Classes' isn't something I recall knowing about at the time but it's definitely in my top 5 Manics songs.

Chicane feat. Bryan Adams - Dont Give Up

2 weeks

Well, I'm not one for guilty pleasures - as in, I don't feel guilty about them - but this is one of the songs that I couldn't really defend liking. But then again, it's a bit snobby to think one has to have a reason to like a song. So, I think I liked this from the minute I heard it. The bit where the beat drops out and the synths get filters in a really awesome way always gets me. The club version is even more awesome.

Of course, Bryan Adams is on it which we wont talk about. And the video is great in an oppressive futuristic sort of way. And Bryan Adams is in it, which we wont talk about either.

It was the very first song I downloaded on Napster in 2000. The second one was the next number 1 in this chart.

Moloko - The Time is Now

2 weeks

One of the most original dance songs ever - constructed completely from acoustic instrumentation, with a compelling and instantly memorable introductory baseline The Time is Now was my single of 2000 and one of the most played songs of the decade. As amazing as it is I have taken a lot of its power away with overplaying.

Roisin's vocals are distinctive, and imbue the song with a vulnerability that really works. Sumptuous.

It won't Q's single of the year, voted by its readers in 2000.

I will be starting this soon again.

Good stuff , I really enjoyed your 1990s thread.

Because I had an ACTUAL chart in 2000 we can compare our #1s. We match so far for "The Time is Now" and "Don't Give Up" - my tastes were a lot more ~mainstream~ in 2000 and it wasn't until July that year that I discovered the Top 75 on Dotmusic (remember that?) and got into Mark & Lard's R1 show and discovering weird and wonderful bands like Black Box Recorder, Grandaddy, Avalanches and Radiohead. I'm getting a little bit sentimental now so I'll stop!

Anthony, will you continue this countdown ?

Do you have any interest in my thread in the same style ?
