07 05 Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour - 30,000 (523,000)

half a million in 11 weeks - not bad in this climate.

They can stop comparing Ariana's success to being the modern day Britney Spears now.

Girl is a flop in comparison to Britney. Not to mention she only sold 55,000 more copies than "Britney Jean" in its first week. Let's call it for what it is, Ariana is a talented pop star with success... But, let's stop comparing these new kids to icons, off the bat.

Quite right. Will people still be talking about Ariana in 15 years time? Doubtful...

Ariana still has a growing fan base. I think it took until Rated R for Rihanna to get a 200k seller. However there's no point in comparing the her with Britney as like Tyler said one is new and the other is an icon.
I can see why the Britney/Ariana comparisons come about but really they're quite awful. This era is more like a mini One of The Boys by Katy Perry, hardly a Baby One More Time.

It's hard to imagine a modern day Britney. It would require a MASSIVE debut hit at the level of Call Me Maybe along with an instant popular recognition the likes of which only a handful of artists have achieved in the last decade. I think only Katy Perry, Adele, Gaga and Rihanna have achieved that, and only Perry did it as quickly as Britney.

Ariana is the latest big thing but she's going to need really GOOD songs to allow her to crossover from the tween market. Problem is absolutely good enough. The Way wasn't, nor is Break Free. But she's just at the start of her career so we shall see.

Vocally she's miles better than Britney ever was or ever will be but I can't see her being as big as Britney even though her fan base is growing but only time will tell. Would love for her to have Katy Perry's success fingers crossed.

Vocally a lot of of artists are better than Britney. But few have come close to reaching the momentum she has. Ariana definitely isn't more talented when it comes to performing or captivating an audience. And that is what makes a pop icon. She had every age group in the world talking about not only her performances, music and videos. They were obsessed with her. And FEW are able to make that crossover that Britney basically copyrighted. Before her there was no road to transition between child star and adult icon. Or even adult 'semi-success' for that matter.

So Arianna is talented. But, she is not breaking a single mold or doing ANYTHING that anyone will remember in ten years.

It will take time for Ariana to build up a fan base since it's only a year since her last album was released which probably explains why her first week sales aren't as high as predicted and only 30k higher than her last album (the extra few coming off due to the success of Problem and Break Free). Not to mention sales climate. Tbh, Ariana can only be compared to Britney if she had near the same success as Britney did at first.

Completely agree, no one has been able to captivate people like Britney did, but like I said time will tell. So to say she wont be remembered in ten years is a little harsh as none of us know of what her future plans are, she may blow up with her 3rd album, she may slowly fade away. Comparing 14 years ago to now is a slightly unfair to do as teenage fans have changed & so has their music tastes. Back then Britneys music was the stuff that everyone listened to and loved, me personally I think that teenagers go for a lot more mature music now'a days. Hopefully Ariana can stick around for a few more years which I'm pretty sure of as she has some die hard fans.

That's why i said she isn't doing anything that will be remembered. I never said she wouldn't.

I was just generally tired of publishers like Billboard comparing her to an act she does not YET, deserved to be compared to. That is all.

I do agree that Ariana's current efforts aren't anything that'll be remembered. 'Problem' is pretty big but nothing iconic.

How long she'll last is hard to say. She's very popular and it's hard to imagine her fanbase just disappearing but at the same time it's just hard to imagine her ever being a huge loved figure among the general public. The lack of star power and enunciation problems are her biggest weaknesses imo. Her voice may be great but it's just so hard to take her performances seriously when she blends every word into one long "fluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurgh".

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE ABOUT HER ENUNCIATION!

I think that's fair. I was a teenager in 1999 and there were significantly fewer options. Few people bought CD singles, and internet was too slow for it to be any real use in exploring new music. To a large degree, whatever MTV and radio played became popular. Interestingly enough, I was probably most exposed to new music on The Box channel since they only played requests.

Also worth noting is that Britney burst on the scene with a new writer/producer named Max Martin who helped her introduce a new sound that basically defined pop music for the next few years. ...Baby One More Time was Martin's first Hot 100 no. 1 and he's currently sitting atop with his 18th (Shake it Off).

All that said, Britney never would have had any staying power without exceptional talent and media savvy. She is also very adept at partnerships and collaborations. She and Christina Aguilera both made out with Madonna on stage but which one turned that coverage into a hugely popular collaboration song? And between Max Martin, The Neptunes, Darkchild, Guy Sigsworth, etc... she has worked with all the great pop writers and producers of the 21st century.

I never wanted a "like post" option so much on BuzzJack before now ^
Please post more Consie!
Thanks! Honestly I'm not a loon but I saw Britney during the Onyx Hotel tour 10 years ago and she sang every single song live and was brilliant. People don't realize how talented a vocalist she actually is... nor how hard she works. She doesn't need to sing each night in Vegas but she does. The only pop star who works as hard as Britney is Gaga, who tours relentlessly.
