When there is a direct link, it can't be ignored. I agree with Jahq that ignoring the link between Furtado and Gwen would be the end of the road for reason.

There isn't a link though....

There's no link but yet I was instantly reminded of Nelly. Of course, in 2006 when some people heard Nelly's new stuff Gwen's name was mentioned.
To be fair when she pushed the boundaries and released something ahead of it's time (Wind It Up) everyone moaned that it was awful. And now she sticks to something good but safe everyone is up in arms and expecting her to experiment more,. Girl can't get a break.

Absolutely love this! It's really grown on me the past few days.

Neither do I like "Wind it up".

As it was awful.

'Pushing boundaries' for the sake of it and releasing something nonsensical and monotonous and bizarre like that is just lazy. Same problem with the monotone Sweet Escape. The other songs were fine and on-trend, but this song sounds lifted right out of 2006. Dated.

And this literally doesn't sound like it was lifted 'straight out of 2006'. It's hardly a BANGLADESH/TIMBALAND cast-off. There's an argument for it maybe having a 2010/11 feel to it production-wise (and even then that's only from sonic sisters like Alejandro, Te Amo and Keri - Lose Control with the Swedish reggae island feel to the production, but we're talking GWEN here - given her ska heritage it's hardly the most outrageous of subgenres to dip into. And it's not like this is a million miles away from the likes of Chandelier production-wise in any case, but I don't really see anybody calling that dated), but since when was that a bad thing? The 2014 pop scene is utterly fucking diabolical - be it either the dying throes of EDM or yet another dull deep-house soundtrack to a comedown.

I'll take something that sounds like pop when it was good anyday over the total wank we're having to put up with now. SAIL ON GWENDOLINE

For me it's just a little hypocritical and frankly bizarre that the majority of the people that are lapping up this song are the ones that dismissed 'Applause' as weak and basic

And idgaf if you are pressed if I bring Gaga into this thread because she is a very relevant topic with regard to making a pop comeback, if you want a happy clappy topic where everyone agrees and praises this song go to ATRL

Very much the case for Gaga as well! But yet there is no issue with Gwen because everyone on here is like 'hey Gwen is back I'll love the song just because it's Gwen' whereas with the likes of Gaga she will lauded with negativity.

Welcome to the pop world, this song isn't going to go anywhere, the video adds null hype to it, radio aren't going to jump back on board with Gwen after 7 years with dated generica like this. If this song is very lucky it'll do an 'Applause' AT BEST. When you're a pop girl, unoriginal lead singles like this are what usually tend to break a career and not make it as proved by many of the fallen pop girls, I can't believe how blind some of you are not recognize what a big mistake this is

GIRL. STAHP. These are two different songs. Saying it's hypocritical to like one song but dislike another is f***ing ridiculous. Please finally deal w/ ARTFLOP

I think I'll stick with what *I* think is right thanks for trying to shove your opinion down my throat tho

a. They're two totally different songs. I love them both, but there is no way on earth it is hypocritical to like one but not the other.

b. Mainly as we hold the two artists to the different standards they set for themselves. Gaga insists every new single she's coming out with is the greatest new thing ever. Gwen's just happy to throw it out there and let people decide what they like. As it goes, I love Applause and ARTPOP but thought them both totally promoted wrongly (and thought ARTPOP was a totally inappropriate title once we got an album that would frankly have been far more aptly named #BANGERZ), which diminished the experience a bit for me. I adore this without compunction. Would I love it as much if Gwen had insisted she was about to upgrade pop for weeks before release? Probably not.

How is it ridiculous? It's exactly the same situation, Gaga making a comeback with a song that resembles her old sound, Gwen making a comeback with a song that sounds old, both making a comeback with something that is not trend setting nor groundbreaking for this first time

When you sell out arenas and reach #1 you're successful, people that call ARTPOP a flop can't even get 100 likes on tumblr

This song is entirely basic, from the repetitive, nonsensical lyrics to outdated production to the 'Am I gettin warrrm? You can do me if I'm gettin waaarm' middle eight.

If GaGa released something as ... BASIC as this, everyone would have been riding her, saying it was the worst, most dated sound ever.

Everything about this song, from the video, to the voice affectations, to the beat, to the lyrics, to the theme, to the middle 8 seem dated. You could have played this on 2006 radio right after the BEPs song above and it wouldn't have sounded out of place ... although like a bit of a rip off.

But they are TWO. DIFFERENT. SONGS.

I like lemons but I don't like oranges. BUT THEY BOTH FRUIT! AND CITRUS! IT'S SO HYPOCRITICAL!!!1

And frankly I don't give a fuck about how well this does because I'm not some closeted 14 year old who posts on ATRL like a mix of a wannabe drag queen and a shit gif machine whilst constantly comparing female popstars against each other and acting like sales are a barometer of quality. We've had a 4 week novelty number one sung by a vision in clashing pastels, and it's about to be replaced by an advert for the benefits of late-term abortion. Frankly, as long as music like this exists, I don't give a piss if a public that laps that shit up is on board with this or not.
Ha you are right about the novelty song sung by a chubby girl about being fat, as if that's the only thing larger girls can sing for their first single, and that Ed Sheeran song, but your opinions are off beat in saying you can't compare these two comebacks.

They both have the same word in and fall under the huge umbrella of 'reggae-ish'. Somebody call the lawyers!!!!!!

Apart from having basically no melodic relation, the two are polar opposites in moods. Don't Lie's a breezy cheerful pop song which tries to make light of lying to your girlfriend. Baby Don't Lie's a somber track about having suspicions that your long-term partner's falling out of love with you and confronting them on it. And really, you have to be pretty slow to think there's anything nonsensical in the lyrics.

Really? Nothing nonsensical in the following GEMS:

'Am I gettin waaaarm? Am I gettin waaarm? You can DO me if I'm gettin waaayrm?'

They are thematically, lyrically and tonally veeery similar songs. It just sounds so dated and out of place, just like Big Hoops.
