Here I'll be counting down my Top 200 Top 20 hits of 2013. This will include hits in both the United Kingdom and the United States but nowhere else. My criteria was that I did not include songs that were Top 10 songs in 2013 if they had already hit the Top 10 in 2012 (eg. Scream and Shout), and the same goes for Top 20 hits (eg. Latch) (but I did include some Top 10 hits that were in the Top 20 in 2012 but never in the Top 10 (eg. Drinking From The Bottle) … if that makes sense, lol). I also excluded songs that hit the Top 20 in 2013 but then reached the Top 10 in 2014 (eg. Dark Horse). Other songs that I disqualified were songs that hit the Top 10/20 in the past, even if it wasn't in 2012 (eg. Lets Get Ready To Rhumble), but included them if they never got into the Top 20 back then (eg. Highway To Hell).

This left me with 244 songs, but I'm not going to count them all down so first off here are the 44 songs that didn't make it into my Top 200, in alphabetical order:

So there we have it. These are the 44 songs that did not impress me enough to make the actual countdown. I'd like to point out that I took a listed to every single song that I had not heard before just so that I wasn't unjustly eliminating them, and this honestly resulted in some surprising eliminations as a couple of songs that I would have dropped just based on the artist or the name (yeah I judged the books by their covers lol) were a lot more enjoyable than expected so I kept them over some songs that I don't exactly dislike (eg. Mozart's House, Cruise, Bound 2, Love Is On The Radio, etc).

What can we tell from this list of eliminees? Well, most of them only have one song in the Entire Top 244, but a couple will make appearances later on. These are: 2 Chainz (4 entries), Big Sean (1 entry), Dizzee Rascal (3 entries), Drake (3 entries), Eminem (2 entries), Future (1 entry), John Martin (1 entry), Justin Bieber (3 entries), Lady Gaga (2 entries), Miley Cyrus (2 entries), Nelly (2 entries), One Direction (6 entries), Pharrell Williams (3 entries), Rita Ora (1 entry), The Wanted (2 entries), Tinie Tempah (2 entries), Union J (1 entry), Will.i.am (2 entries) and Wiz Khalifa (1 entry).

As I said earlier, I don't hate all of these songs and some I even liked at first but grew sick off after being overplayed. Some I was just always rather indifferent about and some I hated from the first listen. Anyway, enough about this sorry bunch. I'll kickstart this list in the next couple of hours with #200 - #191.

200. 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa - "We Own It (Fast and Furious)"

UK #06, US #16

So this was taken off the soundtrack for the sixth (!!) Fast & Furious film last year and for some reason seemed to stick around for ages even though for me it never really goes anywhere. It's nice enough but I got rather quickly bored of it which is why I'm ditching it here in last place on the countdown.

This marks Khalifa's sole entry on the chart this year but I can guarantee he'll have some better luck in both 2011 ('Black & Yellow') and 2014 ('Feelin Myself'). 2 Chainz however, aka. 2013's token feature rapper, still has three featuring songs yet to appear on the countdown: 'F**kin Problems', 'Talk Dirty' and 'Trampoline'. He's one of the artists with the most entries in the Top 200 but honestly I would not even be able to pick him out in a line-up if my life depended on it.

199. The Vamps - "Can We Dance"

UK #02

The Vamps are a band that I've grown to like a lot more since their debut single even though they have a name that could have been invented by a 12 year old Twi-Hard. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a cute song and all but I just don't get how this is their highest charting song yet. I remember being extremely pissed that some stupid band called "The Vamps" (really?!) was about to steal the crown from OneRepublic because of their annoying as f**k technique of releasing many different versions of the same damn song, but thankfully that didn't happen. Then I gave it a listen and actually enjoyed it for a bit but the fall was quick and painless as the following weeks consisted of me skipping the song every time it came on. Oops.

The Vamps have, as I said before, gotten a lot better since though and I can easily guarantee that all three of their follow-ups (so far, excluding the not-yet-released 'Oh Cecelia') will make the Top 200 for 2014 and two of them are likely to make the Top 100 as well. Thankfully I didn't write them off after this first rather generic boy band song which places second-to-last on this countdown.

Shame on you Vamps, you definitely *could* (and did) do better.

198. 50 Cent featuring Eminem and Adam Levine - "My Life"

UK #02, {US #27}

50 Cent is definitely a hit or miss kind of artist for me (and the same actually goes for Levine, though Eminem is mostly just miss for me these days) and this is one of those miss songs for sure. The only reason I ranked it this "high" is because unlike overplayed songs such as 'Happy' and 'Rap God' I can actually sing along to the chorus if I'm drunk (I honestly cannot keep from getting annoyed if I hear Happy when I'm out with my friends. Seriously.) Adam and Fiddy are also both really hot so I give the song some points for that (because I can and I want to).

This is Fifty's only song on the countdown but I'd much rather have preferred it to be 'New Day' than this trainwreck of a song. Adam sounds a bit screechy (which he tends to do) and Eminem's rap is just as annoying as seems to be the norm these days. Eminem only has one more song on the countdown (thanks to Rihanna, mostly) and Adam has two songs to come thanks to his band Maroon 5.

I'm so glad this sort of flopped. (7 weeks in the Top 75 is nothing to brag about, even if the song starts out at No. 2)

197. Gabrielle Aplin - "Please Don't Say You Love Me"

UK #06

Ok lets begin with the obvious: Gabrielle is hella cute and I love her sound but this is just definitely not her best song. I do like it, but just definitely not as much as 'Panic Cord', 'Power of Love' or my absolute favorite 'Home' (how did this not make the Top 20?! Shame on you Britain!) The problem with this song is that it's just so forgettable. I had to play it like three times to remember what it sounded like (I kept singing it way differently in my head) and since I never really got into it to begin with (no idea why) this unfortunately falls behind all these other songs that I do like and know and have listened to.

If I had given it a chance when it was originally released this would definitely have been a totally different story and 'Please' would have placed somewhere around the Top 150 at least, but this is not the case right now so unfortunately here it stays for the time being. (I've downloaded it now and will be giving it some more listens in the future so things could change a bit if I do this again in a year or so).

Gabi has one more song on this year's list and it'll be a while until we see that fall of as it's far superior to this forgettable number.

196. Arctic Monkeys - "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?"

UK #08

This is another case of a song that would have placed higher if I had actually listened to it before now, but it's hard to place it higher when I'm so unfamiliar to it. 'Do I Wanna Know' is an absolute masterpiece, and 'Snap Out Of It' is one of my favorite alternative rock songs of 2014 so I'm sure this would have been similarly successful on my iPod if I had given it a chance back when.

The video is pretty funny and actually makes the song a lot better to be honest (as it's not as instant as the others that I name-called earlier). It features this guy who's obviously either piss-drunk or (as the title of the song suggests) stoned off his ass, and he keeps texting this chick trying to meet her in the dead of night but doesn't get any answers. The next morning she checks her phone and sees 14 missed calls from "Alex Band Guy" (in all likelihood referencing Alex Turner, lead singer of Arctic Monkeys, lmao).

I think I kind of already regret placing this so low..

195. Miranda Lambert - "Mama's Broken Heart"

US #20

Ok so this was a surprise for me to be honest. I'd already gotten rid of pretty much all of the country songs in preliminary rounds but somehow didn't dislike this one enough to kick it out. In case you couldn't tell I really don't like country music and have never really given Miranda Lambert a chance before because honestly I just thought it would be a waste of time. That was definitely not the case as this is actually a really cool song! This is still as far as it goes, marking the death of all country songs on my chart. (I think - don't sue me if another one suddenly pops up because I'm too lazy to go check)

I actually used to think Miss Lambert was in any way related to glam rocker and Idol alumni Adam Lambert, and I think the disappointment I faced when I realized she's a country singer may be why I didn't really listen to anything she'd done by then. There are some country songs that I like here and there, but that's mostly just The Band Perry and Carrie Underwood though.

Good on you Miranda for not making a country song about drinking beer in cars in them jeans. #everycountrysongever

lol thanks man, for some reason I decided to use the Irish peak instead of the UK one as I was maybe not paying quite enough attention to what I was doing!

Thanks, glad you like it! I plan on doing this for more than just 2013 - going over to 2012 next and then 2011, etc etc and then doing 2014 sometime mid-2015 so that that late-2014 entries will have an equal chance of charting high!

194. Justin Bieber - "Heartbreaker"

UK #14, US #13

I'll be the first to admit that I honestly like Justin's music. Well, most of it anyways. But his weakness is definitely his annoying twat of a personality, so I usually just try to imagine that it's somebody else singing, hah! 'Heartbreaker' is definitely a smooth & sexy r&b number but it doesn't really go anywhere. I definitely like 'All That Matters' and 'Confident' a lot more than this, but I can definitely see myself listening to it in the occasional calm mood I might get into.

This was released back in October as a part of the 'Music Mondays' stint that he pulled for two months, annoying the living sh!t out of all us chart lovers, and it's one of Bieber's three entries on the list, excluding the depends-on-the-mood 'Lolly' which I ejected shortly before deciding on the Top 200. One of them is a feature track and the other yet-to-be-revealed song is a solo, also from his Music Mondays collection.

Just keep making music Biebz and stop opening your mouth for anything other than singing.

193. The Wanted - "We Own The Night"

UK #10, {US #94}

Man this last era for The Wanted was a total mess. First they released a solid pop song in 'Chasing the Sun' in 2012, followed up by a not-quite-as-solid (but still enjoyable) 'I Found You'. Then came the absolutely horrendous 'Walks Like Rihanna' (I honestly can not STAND that song, it's so f**kin' dumb and doesn't even make sense, like what the f**k! Since when did Rihanna have a signature walk?!) and then this was the rather lackluster fourth single of the era. This isn't quite as dumb as 'Rihanna' but my god does it have some stupid lines that grate on my nerves such as the 'Hero' line .. I mean who wants their tombstone to say that all this person ever did was party?! That's not really a life well spent if you ask me. I mean sure, partying can be fun but did this person really not amount to anything else during their whole lifetime?

The Wanted are definitely cringe-worthy at times, and their overconfidence during their silly feud with One Direction (I guess we all know who came out on top there after all) made me like them a lot less. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a 1D stan (though I like a lot of their songs, lol) but they just came across as a lot more grown up than The Wanted which is funny because as a whole they're all a bit younger than the now defunct band. (We all know that a hiatus is never just a hiatus).

Here lay The Wanted. 25% cringe, 25% ear candy, 25% eye candy (mostly just Max though), 25% Max's ego.

192. Ben Howard - "Only Love"

UK #09

Ok so I think this is not going to go down well for some people as this seems to be a pretty universally loved song but I really just don't get it. This is one of the songs that I hadn't heard prior to making this list and to be honest it just mostly bores me. I mean it's beautiful, there's no denying that, but it doesn't really go anywhere at all. I can't really see myself listening to this at all after I'm done with this list but there is still something a bit charming about it which made me not want to discard it earlier.

191. Avril Lavigne - "Here's To Never Growing Up"

UK #14, US #20

Oops, sorry guys I tried to keep it longer but I just don't like this all that much unfortunately. Avril know how to make a cool pop-rock song and this would have been great some 10 years ago but come on Avril, you're pushing 30. It really is time to grow up. The thing that bugs me the most about this song is that I really can't stand how she sings 'boom box' (it sorta sounds like she's saying bermbox which is definitely not a word).

I would have much rather preferred 'Rock N Roll' or 'Let Me Go' had gotten this success as they are sooo much better than this wannabe anthem for 15 year olds stuck in 30 year old bodies. Avril unfortunately does not have any other entries on this chart, but that's because she's a flopstar and not because I didn't like what she released after this.

Well, it could be worse.. At least your lead singles still make some sort of splashes these days. (Even if it's at a Magikarp level)

190. One Direction - "One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)"

UK #01, US #13 {#30 out of 34 No. 1's for 2013}

First things first: How freakin' cute are these 1D boys? Just watching the video and unlike some of these overhyped celebrities they actually look like they're a lot of fun to hang out with. This is also one of the most enjoyable unnecessary cover lately, which is unfortunately not saying much. I'm definitely not a cover kind of person, unless the cover is of a song that I haven't heard before. Everybody has heard 'One Way Or Another' though, and it really is a classic and this really doesn't bring anything new to the song. It's basically just the same track only 1D'fied.

This is fun though and definitely doesn't get on my nerves when it comes on because like I said during The Wanted commentary, I actually like most of 1D's songs (except for 'Little Things' which is terrible and cringeworthy and should never have been made), but I simply cannot let this climb any further on my list as it feels bad enough to have a COVER song make it this far. Blah. Anyway, this is one of SIX One Direction songs in the Top 200 but the next one should follow shortly.

[insert overdone joke about this only going in one direction: out!]

189. Example - "All The Wrong Places"

UK #13

Aw Example, what happened to you? You used to have multiple number ones in a year and have no problem making the Top 10. Now you barely scrape into the Top 20 and then plummet quickly after that. Why is this happening? Well, probably because your songs have become so generic it's not even funny. This is actually one of the better ones but it's still so bland that I have to put it on to remind myself how it goes. 2011 was definitely Example's peak year, but his current era has been soooo bad.

'One More Day' is better than this (but not by much) but Example definitely hit his ultimate low with 'Kids Again' which I can guarantee won't make the Top 200 for 2014. I mean seriously, all three of his singles for this era have spent a total of exactly ten weeks in the Top 75. Ten. Weeks. FFS, even Avril Lavigne spent more time there with 'Here's To Never Growing Up' than the average Example song (avg. 3.33).

Here's an Example of wrong places for you: Faded into obscurity, which is where you seem to be headed.
