August 14, 20222 yr I'd go for Aimee Mann - absolutely outstanding singer/songwriter with amazing melodic songs with real lyrical depth but has never had a top 40 single (came closest with the ultra catchy 'I Should've known' making no. 45 on re-issue) and she's only once clipped the top 40 in the albums with her debut 'Whatever' making no.39. She was also very prominently featured througout the film Magnolia including getting several A list actors singing along to her song 'Wise Up' I loved Aimee Man's 'Whatever' album, I still listen to it now  she definitely should have been at least as big as Tori Amos.
August 14, 20222 yr Alice Merton is another one that comes to mind, especially with how heavily Radio 1 played ‘No Roots’ a few years back.
August 14, 20222 yr Alice Merton is another one that comes to mind, especially with how heavily Radio 1 played ‘No Roots’ a few years back. Not that heavily, it was only B-listed and they never playlisted anything else by her. As much as I enjoy some of her output, I don't think she's ever really been edgy enough to make it big.

August 15, 20222 yr Cody Simpson. He's got looooaaaaads of Twitter followers, is known worldwide, but hasn't ever made any kind of impact here. Of course, he's only 17 so there's still time, but when he had the right material and the same management as Bieber, you'd think they would send his songs to radio and book some promo. Sigh. Cody Simpson now an Commonwealth Games gold medallist in swimming in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the recent Commonwealth Games.
August 15, 20222 yr a few yers back there was this singer called LP, which I also thought was gonna be big well was quite big in EU with a song called Lost on You, but never happened in the UK...
August 15, 20222 yr She’s a massive critical success but I’ve always wanted Laura Mvula to be a bigger commercial one (and expected it during her debut era) All of her albums are incredible, she’s insanely talented and a major star too! It’s criminal how modest her success has been.
August 15, 20222 yr I wouldn't say I 'love' either of them, but girl bands The 411 and Clea had albums which sound good to me but didn't have any major success.
August 18, 20222 yr John Grant.....but sometimes I think people are exactly where they want to be, he probably did 'happen'. Ben Platt....could still 'happen' in a mainstream way (although I also think the level of musical success is pitched about right with the tv, films and theatre).
