04 - Spice Girls - Holler

 

 

Imagine us together, me driving you insane...

 

The Spice Girls' final single (during their initial time together) was the double A Side single 'Holler'/'Let Love Lead The Way', which launched their third (and last) studio album 'Forever'. It had been two years since their previous single 'Goodbye', and also three years since their last album 'Spiceworld' (an eternity in pop world)! Would they still fit into the music scene after being away from the charts for that long, or were they better left behind in the 90s?

 

While the single performed very well (it was their 9th #1 single), the album failed to live up to their previous standards - by "only" reaching #2 in the UK. Westlife had evidently taken their crown as the top pop group of the moment, whose own 'Coast To Coast' album outsold the girls by 3:1 in the first week. That was considered to be an embarrassing defeat, and despite the fact that 'Forever' was soon certified platinum, it was clear that all was not well with the Spice Girls.

 

Their album launch party for 'Forever' was the beginning of the end for the girls, with Melanie C immediately giving the finger to paps upon arrival - she clearly didn't want to attend, much to the annoyance of her band mates. Mel C's personal struggles & evident dissatisfaction of being in the Spice Girls was definitely a strong factor in their decision to quietly part ways in early 2001. Although Emma & Mel B were keen to stress that the group were merely on hiatus, the girls didn't reunite until 2007!

 

I remember recording the radio premiere of 'Holler' on cassette before I had to go to school, and I re-listened to that tape so often until the CD single finally came out! However, it was incredibly uncool to admit to liking the Spice Girls in 2000, so my love for 'Holler' & my excitement that they were finally back was rather muted and something I had to keep to myself. :snif: I even felt embarrassed to hold their CDs in the queue while waiting to pay for them. Where was my girl power?! :o

 

I still listen to this song quite regularly 14 years on, and I'd probably rank it within my Top 5 favourite Spice Girls songs. :wub:

 

Oh, and their performance of this for The Return of the Spice Girls tour is fab. As Mel B might say... bloody watch it! -

03 - All Saints - Pure Shores

 

 

Can you hear what I hear? It's calling you my dear, out of reach.

 

The highest placed song by a group in my count down is 'Pure Shores' by All Saints. I specifically remember that I received this single as a 12th birthday present, and that I also went to see Toy Story 2 at the cinemas that same day with school friends. Oh, and we went to Pizza Hut. It's 3am and quite frankly I'm no longer able to cope with writing commentaries, k. But yes this is a very good song etc.

 

It was a #1 hit in February 2000 (I feel quite alarmed by the fact this song is very nearly 15 years old). It was even the second biggest selling single of the year, so that shows how huge a hit this was. In fact it almost ended the year as the biggest selling, if it wasn't for the fact that Bob The Builder 'Can We Fix It' sold absolutely loads of copies at Christmas time. How inconsiderate of him. x

02 - Britney Spears - Toxic

 

 

I'm addicted to you, don't you know that you're toxic?

 

When I first listened to 'In The Zone', 'Toxic' didn't strike me as being a particular highlight... so apparently I was deaf in 2003. ^_^ I focused more on the likes of 'Breathe On Me' and 'Touch Of My Hand' for a while. Admittedly those are two of her greatest songs, but they were ultimately distracting me from a song which I had wrongly dismissed out of hand. When 'Toxic' was announced as the second single from the album in December 2003, I was a little disappointed in that choice - but nevertheless I gave it another listen. I immediately realised that my first impression had been *so* wrong, and this was of course a huge hit in waiting.

 

Indeed, it became her biggest worldwide hit in quite some time. It was her first #1 single in the UK since 2000, selling an incredibly impressive 100,000+ copies in its first week (this achievement had become a somewhat rare occurrence by 2003/4). 'Toxic' went on to be one of the 10 best selling songs of 2004. It also made the Top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100, her first since 'Oops!... I Did It Again'.

 

The video is without a doubt one of my favourites of all-time too - just like the song, it's flawless. :wub: 'Toxic' even won Britney her first Grammy award in 2005 for Best Dance Recording.

 

Fun fact: Kylie Minogue rejected this song before it was offered to Britney. Kylie later described this song as being "the fish that got away. You just have to accept it."

Here we have it, my favourite single from the first half of the 2000s - 'Everytime', by Britney Spears. :heart:

 

I was really struggling to decide on what my ultimate favourite song should be - after all, so many of these songs hold a special place in heart. It could easily have been 'Toxic' if I'd done this thread at another time. There's just something about 'Everytime' in particular which cried out to be my #1 though... maybe it sounds extra good in winter? It's such an understated & beautiful track, backed by a simple piano riff & delicate/forlorn vocals from Britney. This is her ultimate ballad in my opinion, and certainly a career highlight.

 

Following up her huge hit 'Toxic', 'Everytime' also did excellently. It was a Top 10 hit all over the world, most notably becoming another #1 single for Britney in the UK. Rather curiously, despite housing 2 huge #1 hits, the album 'In The Zone' could never reach higher than #13 in the UK albums chart (it initially only entered at #14 off the back of 'Me Against The Music'). Although it's her second lowest peaking studio album in this country, it's actually her third best selling overall - selling in excess of 500,000 copies. Only '...Baby One More Time' and 'Oops!... I Did It Again' sold more.

 

The 'Everytime' music video caused quite a stir at the time. In the video, Britney is depicted as sliding into unconsciousness in a bath tub, apparently dying as a consequence. Some commented that the video glamorized suicide - noting that her wrists appeared to be slashed - but the video was exploring reincarnation, and those suspicious red lines on her wrist was actually just a Kabbalah string! The blood on the palm of her hand was from a head wound sustained during the video's plot line, not from slit wrists. It's a great video, and thankfully for those of a sensitive disposition, Britney was alive and well at the end of the video, smiling as she rises from the water. I do love this video, and personally I never bought into the 'suicide' interpretation anyway.

 

Ultimately... what a song this is. :wub: It's always a toss up between this, Toxic & '..Baby One More Time' when I try and pinpoint my favourite Britney single. At the moment though, I consider it to be 'Everytime'.

I agree, 'Pure Shores' still sounds fantastic to this day, and it's definitely one of the ultimate girl group singles. A shame they split up barely a year after this song came out! They had a lot of potential to go further, but it seems in-fighting and egos got in the way. A great shame! At least they came back eventually with 'Studio 1', even if they did flop with it. :snif:

Very good countdown, it's a real rollercoaster through the early 2000s which is when I was just discovering music and there's a lot of memories here, even ones as random as V :o Though I was always a bigger fan of their first two singles (almost entirely because I remember them from the Now! albums). They weren't entirely hideous.

 

Your commentary is as good as it is on basically everything else, it's especially good to see your commentary on the more iconic songs of the time period (i.e the top 2 x). Very much looking forward to future countdowns :wub:

I do regret leaving some of those singles out! I guess I felt differently a couple of months ago when I compiled the list, oops! :lol: Britney claiming my Top 2 is rather fitting really, I'd say she was definitely my favourite solo female popstar across those years. :wub:

 

Ha, my Top 100 in particular is really lacking in males. In fact I think there's only one "100% male" song in my Top 100, gosh!

I was rather into V back in 2004 actually, to the extent that I bought all three singles lol, so perhaps leaving out all but one of them here was a bit cruel, hmm. :o Although this list is more a reflection of my current tastes of the music from that time. I guess if I'd done this list in 2005 the order of this list & the inclusions would have been rather different. V launched at totally the wrong time, I guess... 2004 was definitely the year when the public favoured boys with guitars over a standard boy band.
