2013 was an interesting year. It was the year when pretty much everyone who was affiliated with Disney wanted to make a comeback. It was when bro country started to become unbearable... except the general public just didn't catch on. It was a time when the UK had critically-acclaimed hits whereas the US just... we'll cross that bridge when we get there. It was the year of the Twerkpocalypse.

For me, it was the time I started college, the time I got into international charts full-time, and, of course, the time I found a song to hate for the rest of my life.

And I am here to recall, so I can tell about them all. This is where I count down the 50 best and 50 worst songs of 2013 - In true #SlayberryStyle.

Criteria:

I am only counting songs that either gained prominence for in 2013. This means, any song that debuted in 2012 but gained prominence in 2013 (see: "Troublemaker") will be counted, whereas songs that didn't gain prominence for me in 2013 despite debuting during that year (see: "Latch", sorry Brits, but it's a 2014 song to me). Of course, that's a lot to ask for someone who's only counting down 50 sins and 50 hits, so there will be an honorable mention section as well.

So... hopefully this goes well.

Honorable Mention: P!nk f/Nate Ruess - "Just Give Me A Reason"

The Truth About Love, 3rd single

US Peak: #1, UK Peak: #2

The second single from P!nk to reach #1 on Billboard this decade, this collaboration with Nate Ruess was more or less a definition of her versatility as both an artist and a songwriter. Now, I'm fairly used to P!nk going hard for her singles, especially considering how most of Funhouse worked out, and I was banking on "$l*t Like You" (my favorite off the album) to be the third single, so I was fairly surprised to see this become a single. Both P!nk and Nate sound good in the studio and their harmonies are pretty on point, and yes, I'm talking about P!nk. Despite giving a Grammy performance that seemed to be more memorable for P!nk's stamina and Nate not being able to sing live for sh*t, the song was a good delivery for what it was worth.

Dishonorable Mention: Ellie Goulding - "How Long Will I Love You"

UK Peak: #3

I dunno how people will react to this, but after the likes of "Figure 8", "Burn" and her feature on "I Need Your Love", this was kinda... underwhelming, which was disappointing for me because she had already released some gems from Halcyon (Days). Maybe I expected so much from her after "Burn" came out and it grew on me like a wildfire, and I love Ellie (pretty much why I ended up debating on where this would end up for such a long time), but this was kinda boring.

At least it gave me a good comparison for when "Goodness Gracious" came out.

Dishonorable Mention: The Wanted - "Walks Like Rihanna"

UK Peak: #4

Honestly, as much as I love The Wanted, this is my least favorite single. I. Just. Don't. Get it. The Dr. Luke production coupled with the fact that the boys literally have to mention that they have a hard-on for Rihanna about 20 times kinda gets annoying after a while. However, the main reason why this is on the "Dishonorable Mention" list is because of its utter notoriety for being their worst single lyrically. Like OMG. I can't.

There is one silver lining to this song: it's pretty damn catchy.

Honorable Mention: Kelly Clarkson - "Catch My Breath"

Lead Single, Greatest Hits - Chapter One

US Peak: #13, UK Peak: #51

Kelly Clarkson can do nothing wrong in my eyes. So releasing a Greatest Hits album under her name was pretty much the least she could give to those who followed her since being the OG American Idol. "Catch My Breath" was something I expected her to release upon first listen, especially coming off of the vein from Stronger (arguably one of her best albums, next to Breakaway). Absolutely LOVED the two pop singles that came with it, and with that era, I realized that she also has a decent country voice. I honestly don't want her to abandon pop fully, though. She's already built up an amazing catalog and I don't want her to ruin the legacy she's already built.

Let's not forget that she looks absolutely gorgeous in that video.

I don't really remember catchy my breath if I am honest

Walks like Rihanna is awful

Boo at HLWILY on the dishonourable mention list- I adore that song. It hit me about 8 months after release (the only song from 2013 that took anywhere as long for me to love was coincidentally burn). Anyway I brought the song and love it, it's beautiful

Honorable Mention: The Wanted - "We Own The Night"

Word Of Mouth, 4th UK single, 2nd US single

UK Peak: #10, US Peak: #94

Hearing this back in August, I thought it was such an improvement from "Walks Like Rihanna", and I hailed it as one of their best singles since "Chasing The Sun". Now, "Glow In The Dark" passes this, but it's still a pretty good song. Since they were coming off of a bunch of uptempo hits, I expected this to be uptempo as well, and I got something that sounded like "Some Nights". I was surprised they pulled it off like they did, because I thought that it was gonna be a hot mess with that kinda of sound. Nevertheless, this continues to astound me. In a good way.

This should have done better in the US.

YES @ 'Catch My Breath'. One of Kelly's best for me and I was so disappointed when it flopped in the UK. At least it did reasonably well in the US! People have always seem to be a bit "meh" about it and I still don't understand why. :o

It's quite a shame that 'We Own The Night' marked the beginning of the end of The Wanted. The "sounds like fun." element to it seemed to put a lot of people off.

There will be more honorable/dishonorable mentions, but for now, I'm gonna start the best and worst countdown before starting on the intro for 2014, so without further ado:

#50 BEST: will..i.am f/Justin Bieber - "#thatPOWER"

3rd single, #willpower

UK Peak: #2, US Peak: #17

This is probably one of the most surprising entries I had.

On the left corner, will.i.am. Among one of the least respected producers. On the right corner, Justin Bieber. Among one of the least respected human beings. This track? Actually decent. At the first report, I thought this was gonna be a hot mess, and it was a long shot considering "Beauty And A Beat" still hadn't worn off of me (the power of King Zedd). When I heard it... I thought it was gonna be a cool club banger. Then it caught on me, and it was a #1 for me.

Now it lives on in Just Dance 2014, where you can dance and have that power any time you want.

I should hate this. I'm supposed to hate this... But how could I when it's just so infectious?

#49 BEST: Fall Out Boy - "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)"

Lead Single, Save Rock & Roll

US Peak: #13, UK Peak: #5

Such an incredible comeback for one of my favorite bands in the market right now. After Patrick Stump decided to make a solo effort (and failed miserably), the band reunited and made this gem available to us all around the world. I like it because it's pretty much classic Fall Out Boy: from the hard-hitting sound, to the extremely long title that somehow fits inside the bridge. It's an excellent move for them to emerge back into the mainstream, and it helped them with both their pop and core alternative fans.

The fall out boy track is bad but a masterpiece compared to the nightmare of the fox which is possibly one of the worst songs ever to exist :puke2:
