So it has finally been revealed tonight that Tom Odell will be singing the soundtrack to this year's John Lewis Christmas advert, a cover of John Lennon's 'Real Love'.

The advert, featuring the character of Monty the Penguin, is due to be released onto social media in a few hours time! The last two John Lewis Christmas advert songs have both reached #1, sung by Gabrielle Aplin and Lily Allen. Tom is the first male solo singer to do this advert, so it'll be interesting to see how his success compares to the females!

He's going for all the "first male" things isn't he? :kink: First male winner of BRITs Critics' Choice, although he happened to be the least successful one of them so let's hope that doesn't transfer to this cover

It sounded really good on the advert though and I'm up for ANY new music from him, the debut was fantastic from start to finish and was my 2nd favourite album of last year.

Love this song. I've downloaded it already. I can't see it doing better than the past two John Lewis singles, even though I prefer it massively to Lily's.

Well it's much better than I expected and does fit perfectly in context of the advert, after a few more listens of the song and watches of the advert I will probably end up downloading it on iTunes too!

Glad they've released it straight away (like Gabrielle did with hers) and not waited for the Sunday unlike Lily (although that made sense I guess seeing as she was a very well-known name using this to launch her comeback).

iTunes banner is already up for this. Hopefully it'll be very successful for him!

It's also on Spotify already!

I've given it so many spins on Spotify already! It helps that the song is only 2:20 long. If this goes to #1, what was the last song to reach #1 with such a short length?
It's up to 29 on iTunes already. SLAY. It's going to be his highest peaking single to date for sure.

Icona Pop - I Don't Care/I Love It would be my guess.

Really hope this doesn't go to Number 1. I know it's a controversial choice but 'Real Love' is one of my favourite Beatles songs, definitely very under-rated, so I was never gonna like anyone messing around with it, but I particularly don't like the way he's changed the melody in the "waiting for you" / "waiting for love" lines :( but on a positive note, hopefully it will make a few more people download the original.
I really like this, Tom's debut was one of my favourite albums of last year and I'm glad this is setting him up to do well again.

Just discovered this old John Lennon demo of the song (a piano version like Tom's, rather than the fully produced Beatles version). I can't help but feel it's far superior to Tom's version...

Soo, this flopped.

They should've used Leona.

The advert's barely gotten going yet, same for the airplay. It's doing fine :P

It's not done as well as I'm sure both Tom, his label and most of us all thought it would do. Maybe the advert hasn't been played quite as much as Gabrielle's and Lily's - although I feel like I've seen it just as much as them - but both of them were firmly in the iTunes top 10 at this point I'm sure and both got massive rises every time the advert was played during a primetime slot - yet this one doesn't seem to move up more than a couple of places at a time and then falls for the rest of the week.

I look forward to be proven wrong in a couple of weeks when this is probably sitting pretty in the top 5 but considering both Lily and Gabrielle reached (or re-reached) #1 at the beginning of December, this is stuck outside the top 20 so it's definitely not matched expectations so far.

In all honesty, I think most said it wasn't gonna be as big as The Power of Love or Somewhere Only We Know cause it's not as commercial a track, but I'd hoped it would do better. The ad definitely hasn't been played as much as the past two, I've not seen it during X Factor the past couple of weeks sadly. :(
