I think it runs a bit deeper than just Christmas songs. How many novelty songs do you see in the charts these days? Well, maybe a one week wonder in the top 5, Xmas week, following some online campaign or other, but that's about it! Have we lost the once famous British sense of humour?

As for 21st century Xmas songs, I can only think of one that I really like. George Michael with December Song, which, despite his X Factor appearance, didn't reach the top 10. That to me was a big surprise.

Even in the past, not everyone did Xmas songs. I can't think of a Madonna or Beatles Xmas song?

Madonna did a version of "Santa Baby" that knocks Kylie Minogue's version deep into the Arctic Tundra.

The Beatles did Christmas EP's from 1963-1969 which were for distribution to their fan club, containing a mix of songs, some Christmas carols and spoken word greetings.

Eartha Kitt's original version >>>>>>>>>> Kylie's version

haven't heard Madonna's cover

In 2005 there was: The Water Babies "Under The Tree" ( ) which made it to No.27 or something.

People do release new Christmas singles every year, I don't get the whole 1974-1994 was a 'golden age' period. Actually I call BS on that statement, however since 2007 with downloads allowing older songs to re-chart that may have some truth.

As a huge Madonna fan I prefer both Eartha and Kylie's versions to hers. :)

Theyre also clearly missing the 1973 battle too ;)
